iha heyopādeyānāṃ hānopādāne pramāṇād eva | tac ca niścayātmatayā prāmānyaṃ bhajate | niścayaś ca śabdasāhityenārthaṃ viṣayīkaroti | śabdasya cārthapratītipratipattilakṣaṇakāryānyathānupapattyā kārakatvāt kalpyamāno vyāparo 'bhidhādiśabdapratipādyo nānāprakāra iti tatparīkṣārthaṃ śabdavyāpāravicārātmakaṃ prakaraṇam idam ārabhyate | vyāpāraś ca śṛṅgagrāhikayā darśayituṃ na yujyate iti viṣayamukhena pradarśyate -- jātiḥ kriyā guṇaḥ saṃjñā vācyo 'rthaḥ samitadhvaniḥ | agṛhītasaṅketasya śabdasyārthapratipatter abhāvāt saṅketasahāya eva śabdo 'rthaṃ pratipādayati | tena samitaḥ saṅketito dhvaniḥ śabdo yatra yo 'rthaḥ | pūrvam upalabhyatvān na tu viśrāntidhāmatvān mukhya iti prasiddho vācyo 'bhidheyo 'rthaḥ | tathā cāha -- jātir ityādi | iha yadyapi pravṛttinivṛttiviṣayo vyaktir eva, tathāpy ānantyad vyabhicārāc ca tatra saṅketaḥ kartum na pāryata iti gauḥ śuklaś calo ḍittha ityādīnām ekārthatvaṃ mā prasāṅkṣīd iti ca śabdānām upādhāv eva saṅketaḥ | upādhiś ca vastudharmo vaktṛyadṛcchāsaṃniveśitaś ca | ādyaḥ siddhaḥ sādhyaś ca | siddho 'pi dvividhaḥ padārthasya prāṇaprado viśeṣādhānahetuś ca | ādyo jātiḥ | uktaṃ hi vākyapadīye -- "gaur hi svarūpeṇa na gauḥ, nāpy agauḥ, gotvābhisaṃbandhāt tu gauḥ" iti | dvitīyo guṇaḥ | śuklādinā hi labdhasattākaṃ vastu viśeṣyate | sādhyaḥ pūrvāparībhūtāvayavaḥ kriyārūpaḥ | ḍitthādiśabdānāṃ antyabuddhinirgrāhyaṃ saṃhṛtakramaṃ svarūpaṃ vaktrā yadṛcchayā ḍitthādiṣv artheṣūpādhitayā saṃniveśyate iti ca saṃjñārūpo yadṛcchātmaka iti | gauḥ śuklaś calo ḍittha ityādau catuṣṭayī śabdānāṃ pravṛttir bhāṣye kathitā | paramāṇutvādīnāṃ tu guṇamadhyapāṭhāt pāribhāṣikaṃ guṇatvam | nanu payaḥśaṅkhādyāśrayībhūteṣu śuklādiguṇeṣu yadvaśena śuklaḥ śukla ity abhinnāv abhidhānapratyayau stas tacchuklatvādisāmānyam | guḍataṇḍulādipākeṣu evam eva pākatvādikam | śukasārikādyudīriteṣu ḍitthādiśabdeṣu ca ḍitthādiśabdatvaṃ pratikṣaṇaṃ bhidyamāne vā ḍitthādyarthe ḍitthāditvam astīti katham catuṣṭayī śabdānāṃ pravṛttiḥ | ucyate | saṃsthānāvasthānapramāṇavarṇair bhede 'pi vyaktīnāṃ śābaleyo gauḥ dhāvaleyo gaur ityādyekapratyayahetutvaṃ jāter eva | haṃsahārādīnāṃ ghṛtaguḍādīnāṃ śukasārikādyudīritaḍitthādiśabdānāṃ nānāvasthaḍitthādyarthānāṃ ca bhede 'pi haṃsaḥ śuklaḥ, hāraḥ śuklaḥ, ghṛtaṃ pacyate, guḍaṃ pacyate, ḍitthaśabdo ḍitthaśabdaḥ, ḍittho ḍittha ityekākārāvagatinibandhanatvād ekarūpatvam eva guṇakriyāyadṛcchānām iti naitāsāṃ bhinneṣv abhinnābhidhānapratyayahetur jātir ghaṭata iti catvāry eva śabdapravṛttinimittāni ||

aparam āha -- tadbādhe rūḍhito 'rthād vā lakṣaṇīyas tadanvitaḥ || 1 || śabde kuśala ityādau darbhagrahaṇādyayogāt gaṅgāyāṃ ghoṣa ityādau ca gaṅgādīnāṃ ca ghoṣādhikaraṇatāsaṃbhavāt mukhyārthasya bādhaḥ, rūḍitaḥ prasiddheḥ tathā gaṅgātaṭa ityāder yeṣāṃ na tathā pratipattis teṣāṃ pāvanatvādīnāṃ tathāpratipādanātmanā prayojanena | tena mukhyenārthenānvito lakṣaṇīyo lakṣaṇāvyāpāragocaraḥ | saṃbandhaś cātra vivekatvādiḥ sāmīpyādiś ca | evaṃ vācyavācakārthaniṣṭhau vyāpārāv abhidhālakṣaṇe | svasiddhaye parākṣepaḥ parārthaṃ svasamarpaṇam | upādānaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ cety uktā śuddhaiva sā dvividhā || 2 || kuntān praveśaya yaṣṭī praveśayetyādau kuntādibhir ātmanaḥ praveśasiddhaye svasaṃyoginaḥ puruṣā ākṣipyante | tata upādāneneyaṃ lakṣaṇā | "gaur anubandhyaḥ" ityādau śruticoditam anubandhanaṃ kathaṃ me syād iti jātyā vyaktir ākṣipyate na tu śabdenocyate | "viśeṣyaṃ nābhidhā gacchet kṣiṇaśaktir viśeṣaṇe" iti nyāyād upādānalakṣaṇā nodāhartavyā | na hy atra prayojanam asti na vā rūḍhiḥ | vyaktyavinābhāvāt tu jātyā vyaktir ākṣipyate yathā kriyatām ity atra kartā, kurv ity atra karma, praviśa piṇḍīm ityādau gṛhaṃ bhakṣayetyādi ca | pīno devadatto divā na bhuṅkte ity atra ca rātribhojanaṃ na lakṣyate | śrutārthāpatter arthāpatter vā tasya viṣayatvāt | gaṅgāyāṃ ghoṣa ity atra taṭasya ghoṣādhikaraṇatāyāḥ siddhaye gaṅgāśabdaḥ svārtham arpayatīty evamādau lakṣaṇenaiṣā lakṣaṇā | ubhayarūpā ceyaṃ śuddhā upacāreṇāmiśritvāt | anayor bhedayor lakṣyasya lakṣakasya ca na bhedarūpaṃ taṭasthatvam | taṭādīnāṃ gaṅgādiśabdaiḥ pratipādane tattvapratipattau hi pratipipādayiṣitaprayojanasampratyayaḥ | gaṅgāsambandhamātrapratītau tu gaṅgātaṭe ghoṣa iti mukhyaśabdābhidhānāl lakṣaṇāyāḥ ko bhedaḥ ||

sāropānyā tu yatroktau viṣayī viṣayas tathā | āropyamāṇa āropaviśayaś ca yatrānupahnutabhedau sāmānādhikaraṇyena nirdiśyete sā lakṣaṇā sāropā | viṣayyantaḥkṛte 'nyasmin sā syāt sādhyavasānikā || 3 || viṣayiṇāropyamāṇenāntaḥkṛte nigīrṇe 'nyasminn āropaviṣaye sati sādhyavasānā | bhedāv imau ca sādṛśyāt saṃbandhāntaratas tathā | gauṇau śuddhau ca vijñeyau imāv āropādhyavasānarūpau sādṛśyahetū gaur vāhīka ity atra gaur ayam ity atra ca | atra svārthasahacāriṇo guṇā jāḍyamāndyādayo lakṣyamāṇā api gośabdasya parārthābhidhānaṃ prati nimittatvam upayāntīti kecit | svārthasahacāriguṇābhedena parārthagatā guṇā eva lakṣyante na tu parārtho 'bhidhīyata ity apare | sādhāraṇaguṇāśrayaṇena parārtha eva lakṣyata ity anye | uktaṃ cānyatra -- abhidheyāvinābhūtapratītir lakṣaṇocyate | lakṣyamāṇaguṇair yogād vṛtter iṣṭā tu gauṇatā iti | avinābhāvo 'tra sambandhamātraṃ na tu nāntarīyakatvam | tattve hi mañcāḥ krośantītyādau lakṣaṇā na syāt | avinābhāve cākṣepeṇaiva siddher lakṣaṇāyā nopayoga ity uktam | yena gogatajāḍyamāndyādisadṛśajāḍyamāndyetyādy ucyate tena guṇābhedābhyupagame guṇajātiprasaṅgāc catuṣṭayī śabdānāṃ pravṛttir uktā vyāhanyate | āyur ghṛtam, āyur evedam ityādau sādṛśyād anyaḥ kāryakāraṇabhāvādiḥ paraḥ sambandhaḥ | evamādau ca kāryakāraṇabhāvādilakṣaṇapūrve āropādhyavasāne | atra gauṇabhedayor bhede 'pi tādrūpyapratītiḥ sarvathāivābhedāvagamaś ca prayojanam | śuddhabhedayos tv anyavailakṣaṇyenāvyabhicāreṇa ca kāryakāritvādi | kvacit tādarthyād upacāraḥ, yathā indrārthā sthūṇā indraḥ | kvacit svasvāmibhāvāt, yathā rājakīyaḥ puruṣo rājā | kvacid avayavāvayavibhāvāt, yathā agrahasta ity atrāgramātrāvayave hastaḥ | kvacit tātkarmyāt, yathā atakṣā takṣā | lakṣaṇā tena ṣaḍvidhā || 4 || ādyabhedābhyāṃ saha | sā ca "vaktur vākyasya vācyasya rūpabhedād vibhidyate" | tatra vaktṛsvarūpaparyālocanāt sā yathā --

upakṛtaṃ bahu tatra kim ucyate sujanatā prathitā bhavatā param |
vidadhad īdṛśam eva sadā sakhe sukhitam āssva tataḥ śaradām śatam ||

bahubhir upakārais tāpyamānasya kasyacid uktir iyam | ato vaktṛmahimnā mūrkhe bṛhaspatiḍśabdena mūrkhatvam ivāpakāriṇi durjanatvādy atra lakṣyate | vākyaviśeṣāvadhāraṇād yathā --

dhanyāsi yā kathayasi priyasaṅgame 'pi
visrambdhacāṭukaśatāni ratāntareṣu |
nīvīṃ prati praṇihite ca kare priyeṇa
sakhyaḥ śapāmi yadi kiṃcid api smarāmi ||

atra dhanyāsmi lakṣyate | vākyasyaivātra śaktiḥ | vācyaviśeṣanirūpaṇād yathā --

bhuvanābhayadānasaktaśakteḥ
sakalasvīkriyamāṇasampadas te |
na samānadhurādhirohadoṣaṃ
sumate ko 'pi kadāpi kartum īṣṭe ||

atra prāṇasamasya vyasane 'pi taṭasthas tṛṇamātram api dātum asamarthaś ca vācyaḥ | evaṃ dvikabhedās trayaḥ trikabhedaś caika udāhāryaḥ |

dṛṣṭiṃ he prativeśini kṣaṇam ihāpy asmadgṛhe dāsyasi
prāyo naiva śiśoḥ pitāsya virasāḥ kaupīr apaḥ pāsyasi |
ekākiny api yāmi tad drutam itaḥ srotas tamālākulaṃ
nīrandhrās tanum ālikhantu jaraṭhacchedā naḍagranthayaḥ ||

ity atra

prāptaśrīr eṣa kasmāt punar api mayi taṃ manthakhedaṃ vidadhyān
nidrām apy asya pūrvām analasamanaso naiva sambhāvayāmi |
setuṃ badhnāti bhūyaḥ kim iti ca sakaladvīpanāthānuyāte
tvayy āyāte vitarkān iti dadhata ivābhāti kampaḥ payodheḥ ||

durvārā madaneṣavo diśi diśi vyājṛmbhate mādhavo
hṛdy unmādakarāḥ śaśāṅkarucayaś cetoharā kokilāḥ |
uttuṅgastanabhāradurdharam idam pratyagram anyadvayaḥ
soḍhavyāḥ sakhi sāmprataṃ katham amī pañcāgnayo duḥsahā ||

ity atra ca nādeyapānīyānayanena parapuruṣasambhogasya naḍagranthalekhanena sambhāvyamānanakhadaśanakṣatānāṃ ca nihnavātmakaṃ vastu, bhavān harir iti rūpakālaṃkāraḥ, vipralambhaśṛṅgāraś ca raso lakṣyata iti nodāhāryam | mukhyārthasya bādhābhāvāt | asakhyā api sakhyabhidhānasyaivaṃ sambhavāt | ākṣiptasyālaṅkārasya lakṣyatve ca vahnyānayane pātrānayanasya lakṣyatvaprasaṅgāt | abādhitasyaiva vācyasya rasapratītikṛttvāt | saprayojanāyāṃ ca lakṣaṇāyāṃ tadatirikto vyāpāro 'vaśyam aṅgīkartavyaḥ | tathā ca sati prayojane lakṣaṇā | tac ca na mukhyārthabādhanimittavat pramāṇāntarād boddhavyam | tadartham eva lakṣaṇāśabdaprayogāt | na khalu śābde 'rthe pratyakṣaṃ kramate | nāpi tatpūrvakam anumānam | nānumānāntaram anavasthāpatteḥ | na smṛtiḥ tadanubhavābhāvāt | satyām api vā tasyāṃ niyatasmaraṇaṃ na syāt | tasmāc chabda eva tatra pramāṇam | nirvyāpāraś ca śabdo nārthapratītikṛt | vyāpāraś ca nābhidhā tatra saṅketābhāvāt | na lakṣaṇā tasmin sati hi sā na tu tadviṣayā | nāpy asyā lakṣye bādho 'sti | lakṣyaprayojanayoś ca sambandhasya prayojanasya cābhāvāt | tasyāpi lakṣaṇe 'navasthāpattir iti na lakṣaṇā syāt | asti ca sā | tataḥ prayojanaviṣayo vyāpārao 'bhyupagantavyaḥ | sa ca dhvananāvagamanaprakāśanadyotanādiśabdavyavahāryaḥ | nanu gaṅgātaṭe ghoṣa ityādisvaśabdād yādṛgarthapratītir na bhavati tādṛśī gaṅgāyāṃ ghoṣa ityādes tad eva prayojanaṃ pāvanatvādidharmākrāntaṃ ca taṭādi lakṣyate iti viśiśṭe lakṣaṇā na tu lakṣite viśeṣāḥ | evaṃ hi taṭādeḥ pāvanatvādīnāṃ ca dharmadharmibhāvaś caturtho vyāpāra urarīkartavyaḥ | lakṣaṇāphalaṃ ca katham anyena kriyate | na ca vyāpārasya lakṣaṇātmano vyañjanātmā vyāpāro bhavati | śabdasyāsāv iti cen na | tarhi lakṣaṇāyāḥ prayojanaṃ tasmād viśiṣṭam eva lakṣyate | ucyate | lakṣaṇāyās taṭādir viṣayaḥ | na ca tatra pāvanatvādayaḥ santi | tat kathaṃ viśiṣṭe lakṣaṇā | sāmānyaniṣṭhaś ca saṅketa iti tritayātmanā saṅketabhedena lakṣaṇā sā kathaṃ viśiṣṭaṃ gocarīkuryāt | vyajyate tv asaṅketita eva | kiṃca lakṣaṇāyā gocaro lakṣyo na prayojanam | pratyakṣasya hi nīlaṃ viṣayaḥ | prakaṭatā saṃvittir vā phalam | avyabhicārāc ca lakṣyasaṃvit phalatvenoktā | evaṃ hy abhidhāyā api phalaṃ śabdasya ca vācakasya saṃvid eva phalam | tac ca vinā vyāpārān na sambhavati | na ca vyāpārasya vyāpāra iti śabdasyaivāsau vācyaḥ | lakṣaṇānvayavyatirekānuvidhānaṃ ca savyāpārasya phalasyeti tasyās tat kāryaṃ kāryaṃ ca phalam ucyate | kriyāntaraprāpyasya yāgaphalatvam iva vyañjanaśaktinirvartyasya prayojanasya lakṣaṇāphalatvam | nīlaviṣayasya pramāṇasya yathā nīlaniṣṭhaiva prakaṭatā saṃvid vā phalam tadval lakṣaṇāyās tadviṣayaniṣṭham eva prayojanam | tena dharmadharmibhāvaparikalpakaṃ nopayujyate vyāpārāntaram | tena siddham etal lakṣaṇāyā atirikto vyāpāraḥ samāśraṇīyaḥ ||

nirūḍhā kācanānyā tu kāryā sā kācid anyathā | anulomapratikūlādiśabdeṣu kācana sā vācyam arthaṃ parihṛtya lakṣya evārthe vācakavan nirūḍhā | aparā tu mukhyārthabādhanimittaprayojaneṣu satsu kartavyā |

raviṇā hṛtasaubhāgyas tuṣārāvṛttamaṇḍalaḥ |
niśvāsāndha ivādarśaś candramā na prakāśate ||

ityādāv andhādiśabdeṣu anupapadyamānatvād vācyam atyantatiraskṛtam iti vicchāyatvasya lakṣitasyāsāmānyatvaṃ vyaṅgyam | tathā --

sa puruṣaḥ sa ca jīvati satkṛtaṃ
jagati yasya parākramasambhṛtam |
bhramati sūryakaraiḥ saha gām imām
abhinavoditapallavitaṃ yaśaḥ ||

ityādau puruṣaśabdo 'nupayujyamānatvāl lakṣitasvagataparākramavattvādidharmavyaṅgyatadānantyasaṅkramitavācyaḥ | rephadvayānugatabhramarādiśabdābhidheyatve dvirephaśabdaḥ ṣaṭpade yathā prayujyate tathā kokilādau dvika ityādikā anyathā na prayojyāḥ | uktānvaye ca sā paścāt ihānantyād vyabhicārāc ca vākyasya vākyārtha iva viśeṣarūpe padārthe padasya saṅketaḥ kartuṃ na pāryate iti sāmānya eva saṅketaḥ | ākāṅkṣāsannidhiyogyatāvaśāt sāmānyānām abhihitānāṃ satām anvaya iti padārthānāṃ vaiśiṣṭyam | evaṃ cāpadārtho 'pi vākyārthas tātparyaśaktyā pratipādyate | atra pakṣe pūrvam abhidhā tato 'nvayabādhe lakṣaṇā | anvitoktau punaḥ puraḥ || 5 || devadatta gām ānayetyady uttamavṛddhavākyaśravaṇān madhyamavṛddhau viśiṣṭaṃ vyāpāraṃ karotīti dṛṣṭvā vyutpādyamāno nirvibhāge 'rthe nirvibhāgaṃ vākyaṃ vācakaṃ jānāti | tato yajñadatta gām ānayetyādivākyāntaraprayoge sati anvayavyatirekābhyāṃ niyatasya niyatārtham avasyatīti sāmānyāvacchādite viśiṣṭa eva padārthe padānāṃ saṅketa ity anvitānām eva satām abhidhānam iti viśiṣṭānāṃ padārthatā | atra pakṣe abhidhāyāḥ pura ādau lakṣaṇā, viśiṣṭasyaiva padārthatvāt | dvaye dvayam padāpekṣayābhihitānvayaḥ vākyāpekṣayā tv anvitābhidhānam iti dvayapakṣe dvayam | abhidhāyāḥ paścāt purastāc ca sā | akhaṇḍe tu vākyārthe nāsti satyataḥ | vākyam eva vākyārthasya vācakam | padeṣu varṇavad vākyeṣu hi padānām anarthakatvam | tataś ca lakṣaṇā nāsty eva | kaśābhidhānāt turagasya yathā preṣito 'ham anena dhāvana iti pratibhodeti tadvat pratibhāvaśād viśiṣtavākyāt pratipattir iti saiva vākyārthaḥ | asatyabhūtaprakṛtipratyayādikalpanavad avidyāpade padārthakalpanāyāṃ tūkteṣu pakṣeṣu trayaḥ pakṣāḥ | yaś ca sambandho lakṣaṇāyā nimittaṃ taṃ pañcavidham āhuḥ | yathoktaṃ abhidheyena sambandhāt sādṛśyāt samavāyataḥ | vaiparītyāt kriyāyogāl lakṣaṇā pañcadhā matā || iti | tatra dvirephādiśabdasya bhramarādiḥ śabdo 'bhidheyaḥ | tatsambandhāt tena ṣaṭpado lakṣyate iti abhidheyasambandhanimittatā | sādṛśyād yathā siṃho māṇavaka iti | yathā vā --

varṣe samasta evaikaḥ ślāghyaḥ ko 'py eṣa vāsaraḥ |
dinair mahattayānveyo yo na pūrvair na cāparaiḥ ||

atra prakaraṇavaśād mahāpuruṣaḥ kaścil lakṣyate yasya kule pūrve bhāvino vā puruṣā na samānatvam upayānti | samavāyaḥ uktasambandhebhyo 'nyaḥ sambandhaḥ | tato yathā [khaṇḍitaṃ pustakam atra] | sāmīpyād gaṅgāyāṃ ghoṣa iti | sāhacaryāt chatriṇo yāntīti | atra hi chatrisāhacaryād achatrā apy evaṃ vyapadiśyante | vaiparītyād yathā kātare bhārgava iti | kriyāyogād yathā

pṛthur asi guṇaiḥ kīrtyā rāmo nalo bharato bhavān
mahati samara śatrughnas tvaṃ tathā janakaḥ sthiteḥ |
iti sucaritair mūrtiṃ bibhrat purātanabhūbhṛtāṃ
katham asi na māṃdhātā deva trilokavijayy api ||

atrāśatrughne 'pi śatruhananakriyāyogāc chatrughnatvena vyapadeśaḥ | prajñānairmalyavaidagdhyaprastāvādividhāyujaḥ | abhidhālakṣaṇayogī vyaṅgyo 'rthaḥ prathito dhvaneḥ || 6 || yathā saṃketena mukhyārthabādhāditritayena ca sahāyenābhidhāyako lakṣakaś ca yathā vā pakṣadharmānvayavyatirekasahagato vivakṣāyā anumāpakaḥ tathā pratibhānair malyavidagdhaparicayaprakaraṇādijñānasāpekṣo vācako lakṣyakaś ca vyaṅgyam arthaṃ dhvaniśabdo vyanakti | tatra vyaṅgyaḥ

padaprakāśyo yathā
vāṇiaa hatthidantā kutto ahmāṇaṃ vagghakattīa |
jāva luliālaamuhī gharammi parisakkae suṇhā ||

[vāṇijaka hastidantā kuto 'smākaṃ vyāghrakṛtayaś ca |
yāval lulitālakamukhī gṛhe parisaṃkrāmati snuṣā ||]

vākyaprakāśyo yathā --
attā ettha ṇimajjai ettha ahaṃ diasaaḥ paloehi |
mā pahia rattiandhaa sejjāe maha ṇimajjahisi ||

[śvaśrur atra nimajjati atrāhaṃ divasake pralokya |
mā pathika rātryandha śayyāyām āvayor nimaṅkṣyasi || ]

atrābhidhānamūlaṃ vyañjanam | lakṣaṇāmūlaṃ yathā -- niśvāsāndha ivādarśa ity udāhṛtam | sa eva guṇabhūtaḥ padaprakāśyo yathā --

kartā dyūtacchalānāṃ jatumayaśaraṇoddīpanaḥ so 'bhimānī
kṛṣnākeśottarīyavyapanayanapaṭuḥ pāṇḍavā yasya dāsāḥ |
rājā duḥśāsanāder gurur anujaśatasyāṅgarājasya mitraṃ
kvāste duryodhano 'sau kathayata na ruṣā draṣṭum abhyāgatau svaḥ ||

atraite varākā dāsabhāvaṃ gatāḥ kiṃ kariṣyanti asmadekaśaraṇāḥ paribhaviṣyanti ityādi dyūtakāle bhavadbhiś cintitam āsīn nāsmakaṃ vismṛtam | tatra kācit pratikriyā nirvyūḍhā na kiṃ nirvyūḍhā ityādikaṃ tam artham abhivyajya sarvair eva kartā dyūtachalānām ityādibhir vācya evārthe viśramyate |

vākyaprakāśyo yathā --
vāṇirakuḍaṅguḍḍīṇasauṇikolāhalaṃ suṇantīe |
gharakammavāvaḍāe vahue sīanti aṅgāi ||

[vānīrakuñjoḍḍīnaśakunikolāhalaṃ śṛṇvatyāḥ |
gṛhakarmavyāpṛtāyā vadhvāḥ sīdanty aṅgāni ||]

atra dattasaṃketaḥ puruṣo vānīralatāgṛhaṃ praviṣṭa iti vyaṅgyam artham avagamayya vācyo 'rthaḥ svaprādhānyenāsti | na caivam abhidhāyā lakṣaṇāyā vā kaścid avasara iti bhinnam eva dhvananam | nanu ‘yat paraḥ śabdaḥ sa śabdārtha'; iti vyaṅgyābhimato 'pi tātparyāt katham na vācyaḥ | iha sarvāṇy eva kārakāṇi kārakatvāt savyāpārāṇīti sādhyāyamānāny ato bhūtabhavyasamuccāraṇe "bhūtaṃ bhavyāyopadiśyata" ity adagdhadahananyāyena yāvad avahitaṃ tāvad vidhīyate iti kvacit kārakapadārtho 'pi viṣayo bhavati | yathā dadhnā juhoti payasā juhotīti | evaṃ hi pūrvo dhāvatīty aparārthe 'pi tātparyaṃ syāt | anvitaḥ padārtho 'bhihitānvaye anvitamātraṃ tv anvitābhidhāne | tatraiva saṃketopapatteḥ | anvitaviśeṣas tūbhayamate 'py avācya eva | evaṃ ca vācyatve kā vārttā vācyaviparītātmano vyaṅgyasya | na tu vyaṅgyam anumeyam iti śakyaṃ vaktum | na hi vācyavyaṅgyayoḥ pratibandhagrahe kiñcit pramāṇaṃ kramate | prakaraṇādisāmagrīm antareṇa hi na vyaṅgyam | na ca sā pramāṇagocarā | vyaṅgyavācināṃ tv adoṣaḥ | evaṃbhūtāyāṃ pramāṇair apratipannāyāṃ hi sāmagryām upapattim anapekṣyāpi samudayamānā pratītiḥ kena nihnotuṃ śakyata iti | siddham abhidhātātparyalakṣaṇāvyāpārātiriktaṃ dhvananam | etac cānyatra vistareṇa vicāritam iti saṃkṣepeṇehoktam iti śivam ||

iti nikhilavipaściccakravartiśrīrājānakamammaṭācāryaviracitaḥ śabdavyāpāravicāraḥ samāptaḥ ||
