Athāvicchinnaviviktatāyāṃ saudhasya taruṇīyaṃ tāmbūlaṃ carvantī
Atha katipayavarṣottaraṃ tasyā bālasakhyāḥ saralāyāḥ kaścid viśvasanīya ṛjusvabhāvas taruṇaḥ pāṇim agṛḥnāt.
Tayoś ca vivāho vināḍambaraṃ niravartata.
Vyavasāya pravāsinaḥ Saralayāḥ patyur nāsīt sthiro nivāsaḥ kvāpi.
Paraṃ svakāryārthaṃ mohamayīṃ gatāgataṃ kurvann eṣa nagarīm imām adhivastuṃ matiṃ kṛtvā Saralāyā icchām anusarann Amīnāyāḥ prasādasyādhastāt dvitraprakoṣṭātmakaṃ vasatisthānam alpiṣṭham upalabdhavān.
Ativiśālasaudhe 'smin naikabhāṭakabhavanayukte bahutithaṃ kālam uṣitvāpi tatra nivāsino 'nyonyadṛṣṭipatham api prāyo neyuḥ.
Amīnāyā antaḥpuravalabhituṅgavātāyanād adho bhūtalasthasya Saralāyā gṛhasya sūkṣmakārpāsavastrācchāditavātāyanāntaḥprakoṣṭhaṃ sphuṭaṃ bahisto dṛkpatham agamat.
Yadā ca Saralāyāḥ patir nagarān nirayāt tadā sā manaso dvitīyanibandhanabhūtayāḥ sadane 'mīnāyā bhūyiṣṭham aho 'nayat.
Ime ca sahacaryau punaḥ saṅgamenāmandānandam anvabhūtām.
Athāminā svadharmaniyamam anusṛtyā'vaguṇṭhanapaddhatiṃ nibhṛtavāsaviśeṣāvasthitim aṅgīkṛtya kvacid eva vihārāya
Ato nāgarikāṇāṃ prativeśināṃ vā vṛttānabhijñāpi krameṇa saṃjātabahuprajā paraṃ saṃtuṣṭā

Atha gacchati kale dṛṣṭyām Amīnayāḥ ko 'pi khedadyotako vikāro vyaloki.
Tayor nivāsayoḥ puraḥsthasya payonidhes taṭe saprema grathitānyonyakarau Saralāṃ tatpatiṃ ca rajanyāṃ śatapadīṃ kurvāṇā darśaṃ darśam Amīnāyāḥ viṣaṇṇatā vṛddhim agamat.
Sā ca dīrghaṃ niḥśvasatī durmanāyamāneva kvacid ātmānaṃ saroṣam aprākṣīt kuto niḥśvasyate mūḍhena tvayettham iti.
Tāvan nikhile 'hani bhartur mukhadarśanānandaṃ kṣaṇikam evopalabdhavatī sā.
Sahanivāsināv api tāv adhikādhikam asaṃbaddhau sthitau.
So 'yaṃ hi Hamido dyutapriyo naikakrīḍāmaṇḍaleṣu pratyahaṃ vinoditātmā gehaṃ nivartituṃ dine dine 'dhikādhikaṃ vyalambata.
Sā cādhīratayā patiṃ pratirātraṃ pratīkṣamāṇāsta.
Paraṃ krameṇa yadā svapatyāgamasamaya āprabhātaṃ vilambitaḥ samabhūt tadā mā pratīkṣasva māṃ
Ahaṃ hi suhṛdbhiḥ sagdhiṃ kariṣya iti Hamidas tām ajñāpayat.
Sā ca tasya vilambasya kāraṇaṃ nitarāṃ jñātukāmāpi kutas tvayā'dya cirāyitam iti taṃ praṣṭum alaṃ dhairyaṃ na vā dṛḍhāgrahaṃ bheje.
Evaṃ tayor vaivāhikasaṃbandhe kathāśeṣamātre saṃjāte hanta svapatiṃ sā nijasantater janaka ity evāvalokayamāsa.
Prāyeṇa bhūyasīnāṃ dhīmatīnāṃ paristhityedṛkśocanīyayā bhāvyam iti manvānā patipremānandarase svapne 'py anāsvādite 'pi nijāvasthāṃ śocanīyāṃ nāmanyatāmīnā manāg api.
Athaikadeyaṃ payodhiphenapāṇḍure śayanīye kṛtapadā prasvāpasukham anubabhūva.
Samayo 'yaṃ kila grīṣmartoḥ.
Avasare 'smin sarvato niśānāthasya saṃpūrṇakalāprāyasya dyutidugdhā dhavaladharā nicayena dhavalitam āsīd dharātalam.
Jalanidher jalāni hīrakanicaya iva cākacakyaṃ bhejire.

Nitāntaviviktatayā viṣaṇṇamanā Amīnā jalābdher ūrmimālāyā mandamandamarmaraṃ śrāvaṃ śrāvaṃ parimṛditamṛṇālinīva mlānāṅgī priyajanasya kasyāpi mṛdulasparśajuṣaḥ sāntvanasyābhilāṣukābhūt.
Tāvat Saralāyāḥ śayyāgāraṃ vidyuddīpakadyotitaṃ vyaloki tayā.
Vātāyanasya sūkṣmanepathyasya pṛṣṭhataḥ Saralāyāḥ sukumāraśarīrayaṣṭir itas tataś calantī dṛggocaratām agād Amīnayāḥ.
Bhartari niryate nagarān niśīthinyāṃ kinnāma kartuṃ pravṛttā syāt Saraleti vyacintayat savismayam Amīnā.
Atha yāvat sakhīṃ samāhvayituṃ pravartate sā tāvat tasyaiva saudhasyādho gṛhapṛṣṭhabhāgato nirgacchantīṃ Hamidasyākṛtim iva kasyāpi puruṣasyākṛtiṃ vyalokayad Amīnā.
Tadanu ca jhaṭiti Saralāyāḥ śayyāgṛhasya dipikā nirvāpitābhut.
Nīravaṃ nibhṛtaṃ pracalan puruṣo 'yaṃ svapatir iti kṣaṇaṃ sā na vyaśvasīt paraṃ yadā svaharmyasya bahir dvāram udghāṭyāntaḥ sa prāviśat tadāyaṃ Hamidam antarā na
Pāṇḍuvadanā vepamānavigrahā kiṃkartavyapratipattimūḍhā sthitavatī ca.
Prabhātaprāyaḥ samayo na cirād bhavitā.
Kuta etāvān vilambaḥ pratyāgamasya bhartuḥ

Yāminīkāminīvadanatilakabindur induś candrikāvyājenāmbaratalāt sudhādhārābhir dharātalam adhāvat.
Antarāntarā vāridhivīcimālānāṃ mandamandaravo 'mīnāyāḥ karṇaśaṣkulīm apūrayat.
Atha yāvat parāvartate sā vātāyanāt tāvat pādacāradhvanim iva kasyāpy aśrauṣīt.
Dhvaninānenākṛṣṭeva gavākṣasavidhaṃ punaḥ sā yayau.
Na cirāc ca samīpavartinaḥ saudhasyādhastalabhāgān nirgachantī Hamidasya śarīrākṛtiḥ punas tasyā dṛkpathe nyapatat.
Himadhavalavasanopari śyāmakṣaumaprāvāro raktaturkoṣṇīṣaś ca niśākarakaranicaye vailakṣaṇyaṃ bhejāte.
Tataś ca gavākṣajālaprasāritai rajatamārjanīnibhaiḥ kalānidhikaranikaraiḥ saṃśodhitāndhakāre payodhiphenasaṃdoheneva nirmite śayanīya upaviśya saṃdehakoponmathitahṛdayā mukham adhaḥ kṛtvā niḥśvasyoṣṇaṃ ca sā tūṣṇīṃ tasthau.
Evaṃ catasṛṣu niśāsu naiśānveṣaṇam upākramatāmīnā yāvat sā Saralāyāḥ kapaṭasya saṃjātapratyayābhūt.
Saralāhamidayor madhye nibhṛtāsaktisambandhaviṣaye na ko 'pi saṃdehaleśa iti niścitamatiḥ sā samabhūt.
Pratinaktaṃ vyatikaram imaṃ pratyakṣīkṛtya lohitavadanā kopasphuradadharā jājvalyamānalocanā śayane kṛtapadā parśvadvaye muhurmuhur luṭhantī nairāśyād avātiṣṭhata.
Kutarkaparavaśeyaṃ kriyāsamabhihāreṇodgacchadroṣabāṣpā krodhāgninā lulitalulitāṅgakais tāmyati sma pratidinam.
Aho kathaṃ nādyāvadhi Saralāyā gūḍhakauṭilyaṃ na tarkitaṃ mandadhiyā mayeti muhurmuhur vicintayantī bhṛśam akupyad ātmane.
Atha pūrvavad yadā saha sakhyā śūcīśilpaṃ kartuṃ Saralā tasyāḥ prāsādaṃ samāyāt tadāmīnā'tyantanirutsāhā kopenāntareva tātapyamānā
Kaiścid api gṛhakāryavyavasthākleśair udvejitā syat sahacarīti Saralā tām ullāsayituṃ savinodaṃ prāyatata.
Param adhikādhikam audāsīnyam evāvalambya vimanāyamānā sthithavaty Amīnā.
Uccaiḥ pustakapaṭhanaṃ cikīrṣuṃ Saralāṃ sapadi sapadi sahastavikṣepaṃ pratyākhyāt sā.
Prativāraṃ yadā Saralā viśrambhālāpaṃ kartuṃ prāvartata tadā tadvacobhir bhūyo vituṣṭahṛdayam ivātmānaṃ sā prādarśayat.
Tadanu Saralā smāraṃ smāraṃ kaver uktim atiparicayād avajñā saṃtatagamanād
Amīnāyā hṛdi tāvat sahacarīṃ prati vidveṣāgnir adhikādhikaṃ samudjvalat.
Anavarataṃ ca vyacintayat sā yadā bālyād yasyāṃ pūrṇaśo vyaśvasaṃ seyam adya katham īdṛgadharmakarmaṇi pravṛttābhūt tatrāpi nijasakhyāḥ saha vallabhena.
Madhuramadhuravacāṃsi matpuraḥ samudīrya parokṣaṃ mām kathaṃ sā pratāritavatī.
Ahaha! Kathaṃ kamalām iva vimalāṃ
Ahaṃ ca tāṃ viśvasanīyāṃ prāṇapriyāṃ ca bhaginīm iva samabhāvayam.
Api Hāmidasya vaibhavena mohitā syāt sā yat svapateḥ patnīvatsalasya parokṣa vyabhicārakarmaṇi prāvartateyam.
Kīdṛśo 'yaṃ viśvāsaghātaḥ.
Kīdṛśīyaṃ cañcalatā cittasya
Ahaha! Kathaṃ nāma tasyā viṣayāsaktiṃ vatsareṣv eteṣu nāvidam.
Kutaś ceyaṃ matgehasavidhe kṛtāvāsābhūta.
Api bhartuḥ parokṣe nibhṛtadurācārāya vyavasitam itthaṃ tayā.
Bāhyato mugdhānanāyā vinayasaṃpannāyāś ca tasyā hṛdi kauṭilyāhiḥ katham āśritaḥ syāt.
Sarvā api sahacarya ātmānaṃ nirāgasaṃ pradarśayantyo 'viśvasanīyāḥ syuḥ.
Itthaṃ tarkavitarkakaṇṭakanikaravyathitā sā Saralāṃ prastutaviṣayam uddiśya viśakalayya praṣṭukāmāpi svapratiṣṭhāyā alīkadarpāj joṣaṃ sthitavatī.
Saralāyāś cirasakhyaṃ tadīyamadhuravacaś ca svapna ivendrajālam iva māyādarśanam ivāmināyāḥ pratyabhād idānīm.
Ādhiṃ cātmano rahasi sahamānāvātiṣṭhata sā.
Atha gacchatsu varṣeṣu śiśur eko 'mīnāyāḥ kenāpi vyādhinā grasta ity
Paraṃ lekham imaṃ prāvaraṇād apasāryaiva yathāgataṃ vāhakāyād āpayad Amīnā.
Anena paramodvignāpi Saralā sakhyai nādruhyan manāg api.
Rugṇārbhakasyāmīnāyāś ca vṛttaṃ svasevakamukhād upalabhya joṣaṃ sthitā.
Athaikavatsarottaraṃ Hamido 'kasmāt kenāpi nirupāyarogeṇākrānto maraṇonmukhaḥ sthitaḥ.
Krameṇa sa ca naṣṭollāghatāśo nacirād vinaṣṭavāg āsanna
Bhartur āśayam avagatyāpi tasya parayoṣidāsaktim anabhinandamānā tatsūcanam avāmaṃstāmīnā.
Saralāyā ākṛtir hi hṛdi tasyāḥ śyāmaśyāmā mṛtyucchāyeva santatam
Atha pañcaṣadinottaraṃ bhagavato bhāskarasyāstamanasamaye Hamidaḥ prati paralokaṃ prasthitaḥ.
Tasya nidhanavṛttaṃ prativeśināṃ sapadi śrutipathe nyapatad acirāc ca
Bhartur mṛtyunā śokākulābhūd Amīneti na
Paricarāṇāṃ gamanāgamaninādena vṛddhasevakānām ākrośakallolena ca jāgaritā.
Tasyā bālakāḥ saṃbhrāntāḥ saṃtrastāś cābhyadhāvan mātuḥ śayyālayam.
Sā ca bālavatsalā gāḍhaṃ tān pariṣvajya mṛdulavacobhiś ca samāsvāsya nijaparyaṅke śāyitavatī.
Supteṣu teṣu Hamidasya sevako niḥśabdaṃ tām upetya nyavedayad yathāsnāpito dhūpito gandhādirūṣito vigrahaḥ svāminah.
Na cirād āyāsyanti nāgarikā anukampina
Purohitā hi samāyātāḥ.
Ity uktayā śīghram āyāmi tāvad iti pratyuktas tayā paricārako 'pāsarat.
Patyur antimadarśanasyecchayā 'mīnāntaḥpurān nirgatya dīrghadīrghagṛhābhyantaramārgān dīpamālābhir udbhāsitān samullaṅghya prāsādasya viśālasopānasamīpasthasya Hamidasya śayyāgṛhasya saṃnidhiṃ kathaṃ katham api prāpa.
Atha yāvat prakoṣṭhasya dvāram udghāṭayitum sā pravartate tāvat paśyati sopānapaṅktim ārohantīṃ śanaiḥ śanaiḥ Saralām.
Niśāmyaināṃ śītaśītasamīreṇa kampamānāṅgayaṣṭir iva tasthau vidhavā.
Avanatamukhī Saralā ca yāvat sahānubhūtiṃ pradarśayitum icchantī sakhīṃ saprema samāliṅgituṃ karapallavau vistārayati tāvad Amīnā tāṃ sahastavikṣepaṃ nivārya bravīti kaṭusvareṇa samāyātāsi niḥsaṃśayaṃ vallabhasyāntimadarśanāyeti.
Naivaṃ naivam.
Āyātāsmi khalu tvatkṛta iti paścāt pracalitā vikampitaśirāḥ pratyuvāca Saralā.
Apradattapratyuttarā ghanasaṃśayatamasāvṛtahṛdayā yāvad Amīnā bhartur āvāsadvāraṃ samudghāṭayati tāvad antaḥ kāñcana kāñcanāṅgīm aṅganāṃ dṛṣṭvā sākrośaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ pracalitā'mīnā.
Kim idam? Keyam? Kuta iyam! Ahaha!
ity udīrayantī khalitasvareṇa cakitā visphāritalocanā sthambiteva sā sthitā.Puṣpamālācchāditasya Hamidasya hi śayanasya savidhaṃ vinyastajānuḥ śyāmasūkṣmadukūlāmbaraveṣṭitāṅgayaṣṭiś cāruvadanā gauravarṇā śirīṣasukumāratanur mṛtasya pādayor nihitaśirāḥ śokajvālāvaliḍheva haridrākṣālitavadaneva niḥśabdaṃ vilapantī muktakaṇṭhaṃ kācit taruṇī vyaloki.
Amīnayā sānuyogaṃ nirdiṣṭām enām ālokya Saralā karṇe 'japat:
Sakhi sahaja evāsyāḥ śokodvegajanito vilāpo vigatāsoḥ prāṇeśvarasya kṛte.
Tayor dīrghānurāgābhijñayā tvayā bhāvyam.
Viditavṛttāḥ sarve 'pi prativeśino Katham? Kadā? Tvam evāsya praṇeśvarīti
Vismitā stambhiteva vacanam Amīnāyā nāvagacchantīva kṣaṇaṃ visphāritanayanāvātiṣṭhata Saralā.
Tataś ca vivarṇavadanam Amīnāyā vilokya sā savegam abhāṇīt.
Ayi mūḍhamate! Yathaihikasampattivaibhavaiśvaryādibhiḥ sanāthīkṛtāsi tvaṃ vidhinā
Prāṇeśvaram antareṇetarapuruṣā me bhrātṛsamānā eva.Iti samudīrya viratavacanā
Muhūrtottaraṃ labdhaprakṛtir uvāca Saralā punaḥ.
Avagatam idānīṃ mayā tava māṃ prati durāgrahahalāhalavikārasya kāraṇam.
Bālasakhyām anindyāyāṃ kutarkajanitaduṣṭasaṃśayapiśācabhāram āropya pañcasu varṣeṣv eteṣu tāṃ hanta dṛkpathād akāraṇaṃ niṣkāsya durmanāyamānam ātmānaṃ paryatāpayas tvaṃ vṛthā.
Vākpratiṣṭhāni dehināṃ vyavahāratantrāṇi.
Vāci khalu satyāsatyahetavo vyavasthitāḥ.
Yadi saralavacanena mām aprakṣyas tvaṃ tarhi yāthārthyam avediṣyaḥ.
Paraṃ hṛdi nibhṛtaṃ vaimanasyam āśritya vṛthā saṃśayajanitābhidrohāgnisantaptā mṛgīva ghorasaṃdehajanitakopavyāghrā
Kāmaṃ tava bhartuś ceṣṭitaṃ nocitam āsīt khalu.
Paraṃ yavanadharmeṇa svadāretarāyāḥ parakīyāyāḥ aṅgīkāro yathānyāyam iti pratipadyata ity api viditam āsīt te.Ākarṇyaitan nipatyāmīnā Saralāyāḥ pādayor viśithilavacanavinyāsā'timandasvarā lajjayā
Sakhi! Kṣamyatāṃ
Sanāthāpy ahaṃ cirāt parāṅmukhībhūte nāthe 'nāthībhūteva kathaṃ kathamapi kālam ayāpayam.
Nāthasya nidhanenādya yathāpūrvaṃ nirviśeṣam avasthitāsmi khalu.
Paraṃ cirād ātmanaiva niḥsāritabālasakhī daivayogāt punar mayopalabdheti madbhāgyabhāskaro 'yam iti pramuditāntaraṅgāsmīti vacaḥ punaruktir eva syāt.
Hanta! Itaḥ param ājīvam āvām ubhe dṛḍhabaddhasakhye sthāsyāvaity udīrya Saralāṃ gāḍham āśliṣya nijaśayanāgāram enām anayad Amīnā.
