brahma-jñāna-kāraṇatvāc chāstrasya tad-yonitvaṃ brahmaṇaḥ / atyantā1tīndriyatvena pratyakṣā3di-pramāṇā1viṣayatayā brahmaṇaś śāstrai1ka-pramāṇakatvād ukta-svarūpaṃ brahma yato vā imāni bhūtānī7ty-ādi-vākyaṃ bodhayaty eve7ty-arthaḥ //

nanu śāstra-yonitvaṃ brahmaṇo na saṃbhavati, pramāṇā1ntara-vedyatvād brahaṇaḥ, aprāpte tu śāstram arthavat / kiṃ tarhi tatra pramāṇam? na tāvat-pratyakṣam / tad dhi dvi-vidham --- indriya-saṃbhavaṃ yoga-saṃbhavaṃ ce7ti / indriya-saṃbhavaṃ ca bāhya-saṃbhavam āntara-saṃbhavaṃ ce7ti dvi-vidhā / bāhye1ndriyāṇi vidyamāna-sannikarṣa-yogya-sva-viṣaya-bodha-jananānī7ti na sarvā1rtha-sākṣātkāra-tan-nirmāṇa-samartha-puruṣa-viśeṣa-viṣaya-bodha-jananāni / nā7py āntaram; āntara-sukha-duḥkhā3di-vyatirikta-bahir-viṣayeṣu tasya bāhye1ndriyā1napekṣa-pravṛtty-anupapatteḥ / nā7pi yoga-janyam; bhāvanā-prakarṣa-paryanta-janmanas tasya viśadā1vabhāsatve 'pi pūrvā1nubhūta-viṣaya-smṛti-mātratvān na prāmāṇyam iti kutaḥ pratyakṣatā ? tad-atirikta-viṣayatve kāraṇā1bhāvāt; tathā sati tasya bhrama-rūpavatā / nā7py anumānaṃ viśeṣato-dṛṣṭaṃ sāmānyato-dṛṣṭaṃ vā / atīndriye vastuni saṃbandhā1vadhāraṇa-virahān na viśeṣato-dṛṣṭam / samasta-vastu-sākṣātkāra-tan-nirmāṇa-samartha-puruṣa-viśeṣa-niyataṃ sāmānyato-dṛṣṭam api na liṅgam upalabhayte /

nanu ca jagataḥ kāryatvaṃ tad-upādāno1pakaraṇa-saṃpradāna-prayojanā1bhijña-kartṛkatva-vyāptam / acetanā3rabdhaṃm jagataś cai7ka-cetanā1dhīnatvena vyāptam / sarvaṃ hi ghaṭā3di-kāryaṃ tad-upādāno1pakaraṇa-saṃpradāna-prayojanā1bhijña-kartṛkaṃ dṛṣṭam / acetanā3rabdham arogaṃ sva-śarīram eka-cetanā1dhīnaṃ ca / sā1vayavatvena jagataḥ kāryatvam /

ucyate / kim idam eka-cetanā1dhīnatvam ? na tāvat tad-āyatto1tpatti-sthititvam; dṛṣṭānto hi sādhya-vikalaḥ syāt / na hy arogaṃ sva-śarīram eka-cetanā3yatto1tpatti-sthiti; tac-charīrasya bhoktṝṇāṃ bhāryā3di-sarva-cenatānām adṛṣṭa-janyatvāt tad-utpatti-sthityoḥ / kiṃ ca, śarīrā1vayavinaḥ svā1vayava-samavetatā-rūpā sthitir avayava-saṃśleṣa-vyatirekeṇa na cetanam apekṣate / prāṇana-lakṣaṇā tu sthitiḥ pakṣatvā1bhimate kṣiti-jaladhi-mahīdharā3dau na saṃbhavatī7ti pakṣa-sapakṣā1nugatām eka-rūpāṃ sthitiṃ no7palabhāmahe / tad -āyatta-pravṛttitvaṃ tad-adhīnatvam iti cet, aneka-cetana-sādhyeṣu guru-tara-ratha-śilā-mahīruhā3diṣu vyabhicāraḥ / cetana-mātrā1dhīnatve siddha-sādhyatā /

kiṃ ca, ubhaya-vādi-siddhānāṃ jīvānām eva lāghavena kartṛtvā1bhyupagamo yuktaḥ / na ca jīvānām upādānā3dy-anabhijñatayā kartṛtvā1saṃbhavaḥ; sarveṣām eva cetanānāṃ pṛthivy-ādy-upādāna-yāgā3dy-upakaraṇa-sākṣātkāra-sāmarthyāt; yathe9dānīṃ pṛthivy-ādayo yāgā3dayaś ca pratyakṣam īkṣyante / upakaraṇa-bhūta-yāgā3di-śakti-rūpā1pūrvā3di-śabda-vācyā1dṛṣṭa-sākṣātkārā1bhāve 'pi cetanānāṃ na kartṛtvā1nupapattiḥ; tat-sākṣātkārā1napekṣaṇāt kāryā3rambhasya / bhaktimat-sākṣātkāra eva hi kāryā3rambho1payogī; śaktes tu jñāna-mātram evo7payujyate, na sākṣātkāraḥ / na hi kulālā3dayaḥ kāryo1pakaraṇa-bhūta-daṇḍa-cakrā3divat tac-chaktim api sākṣātkṛtya ghaṭa-maṇikā3di-kāryam ārabhante / iha tu cetanānām āgamā1vagata-yāgā3di-śakti-viśeṣāṇāṃ kāryā3rambho nā7nupapannaḥ /

kiṃ ca, yac-chakya-kriyaṃ śakyo1pādānā3di-vijñānaṃ ca tad eva tad-abhijña-kartṛkaṃ dṛṣṭam / mahī-mahīdhara-mahārṇavā3di tv aśakya-kriyam aśakyo1pādānā3di-vijñānaṃ ce7ti na cetana-kartṛkam / ato ghaṭa-maṇikā3di sajātīya-śakya-kriya-śakyo1pādānā3di-vijñāna-vastu-gatam eva kāryatvaṃ buddhiman-kartṛ-pūrvakatva-sādhane prabhavati /

kiṃ ca, ghaṭā3di-kāryam anīśvareṇā7lpa-jñāna-śaktinā sa-śarīreṇa parigrahavatā9nāpta-kāmena nirmitaṃ dṛṣṭam iti tathā-vidham eva cetanaṃ kartāraṃ sādhayann ayaṃ kāryatva-hetus siṣādhayiṣita-puruṣa-sārvajñya-sarvā1iśvaryā3di-viparīta-sādhanād viruddhas syāt / na cai7tāvatā sarvā1numāno1ccheda-prasaṅgaḥ / liṅgini pramāṇā1ntara-gocare liṅga-balo1pasthāpitā viparīta-viśeṣās tat-pramāṇa-pratihata-gatayo nivartante / iha tu sakale1tara-pramāṇā1viṣaye liṅgini nikhila-nirmāṇa-cature anvaya-vyatirekā1vagatā1vinābhāva-niyamā dharmās sarva evā7viśeṣeṇa prasajyante; nivartaka-pramāṇā1bhāvāt tathai9vā7vatiṣṭhante / ata āgamād ṛte katham īśvaras setsyati ?

atrā8huḥ / sā1vayavatvād eva jagataḥ kāryatvaṃ na pratyākhyātuṃ śakyate / bhavanti ca prayogāḥ --- vivādā1dhyāsitaṃ bhū-bhūdharā3di kāryam, sā1vayavatvāt, ghaṭā3divat / tathā vivādā1dhyāsitam avani-jaladhi-mahīdharā3di kāryam, mahattve sati kriyāvattvāt, ghaṭavat / tanu-bhuvanā3di kāryam, mahattve sati mūrtatvāt, ghaṭavat --- iti / sā1vayaveṣu dravyeṣu idam eva kriyate ne7tarad iti kāryatvasya niyāmakaṃ sā1vayavatvā1tireki rūpā1ntaraṃ no7palabhāmahe / kāryatva-pratiniyataṃ śakya-kriyatvaṃ śakyo1pādānā3di-vijñānatvaṃ co7palabhyata iti cen na; kāryatvenā7numate 'pi viṣaye jñāna-śaktī kāryā1numeye ity anyatrā7pi sā1vayavatvā3dinā kāryatvaṃ jñātam iti te ca pratipanne eve7ti na kaścid viśeṣaḥ / tathā hi ghaṭa-maṇikā3diṣu kṛteṣu kārya-darśanā1numita-kartṛ-gata-tan-nirmāṇa-śakti-jñānaḥ puruṣo 'dṛṣṭa-pūrvaṃ vicitra-sanniveśaṃ nare1ndra-bhavanam ālokya avayava-sanniveṣa-viśeṣeṇa tasya kāryatvaṃ niścitya tadānīm eva kartus taj-jñāna-śakti-vaicitryam anuminoti / atas tanu-bhuvanā3deḥ kāryatve siddhe sarva-sākṣātkāra-tan-nirmāṇā3di-nipuṇaḥ kvacit puruṣa-viśeṣas sidhyaty eva /

kiṃ ca sarva-cetanānāṃ dharmā1dharma-nimitte 'pi sukha-duḥkho1pabhoge cetanā1nadhiṣṭhitayos tayor acetanayoḥ phala-hetutvā1nupapattes sarva-karmā1nuguṇa-sarva-phala-pradāna-caturaḥ kaścid āstheyaḥ; vardhakinā9nadhiṣṭhitasya vāsyā3der acetanasya deśa-kālā3dy-aneka-parikara-sannidhāne 'pi yūpā3di-nirmāṇa-sādhanatvā1darśanāt / bījā1ṅkuar-ādeḥ pakṣā1ntarbhāvena tair vyabhicārā3pādanaṃ śrotriya-vetālānām anabhijñatā-vijṛmbhitam / tata eva sukhā3dibhir vyabhicāra-vacanam api tathai9va / na ca lāghaveno7bhaya-vādi-saṃpratipanna-kṣetra-jñānām eva īdṛśā1dhiṣṭhātṛtva-kalpanaṃ yuktam; teṣāṃ sūkṣma-vyavahita-viprakṛṣṭa-darśana-śakti-niścayāt / darśanā1nuguṇai9va hi sarvatra kalpanā / na ca kṣetra-jñavad īśvarasyā7śakti-niścayo 'sti / ataḥ prāmāṇā1ntaro na tat-siddhy-anupapattiḥ / samartha-kartṛ-pūrvakatva-niyata-kāryatva-hetunā sidhyan svābhāvika-sarva-sākṣātkāra-tan-niyamana-śakti-saṃpanna eva sidhyati /

yat tv anaiśvaryā3dy-āpādanena dharma-viśeṣa-viparīta-sādhanatvam unnītam, tad-anumāna-vṛttā1nabhijñatva-nibandhanam; sapakṣe saha-dṛṣṭānāṃ sarveṣāṃ kāryasyā7hetu-bhūtānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ liṅginy aprāpteḥ / etad uktaṃ bhavati / kenacit kiṃcit kriyamāṇaṃ svo1tpattaye kartus sva-nirmāṇa-sāmarthyaṃ svo1pādāno1pakaraṇa-jñānaṃ cā7pekṣate; na tv anyā1sāmarthyam anya-jñānaṃ ca, hetutvā1bhāvāt / sva-nirmāṇa-sāmarthya-svo1pādāno1pakaraṇa-jñānābhyām eva svo1tpattāv upapannāyāṃ saṃbandhitayā darśana-mātreṇā7kiṃcitkarasyā7rthā1ntarā1jñānā3deḥ hetutva-kalpanā-yogād iti / na tāvat sarva-viṣayam; na hi kulālā3diḥ kriyamāṇa-vyatiriktaṃ kim api na jānāti / nā7pi katipaya-viṣayam; sarveṣu kartṛṣu tat-tad-ajñānā1śakty-aniyamena sarveṣām ajñānā3dīnāṃ vyabhicārāt / ataḥ kāryatvasyā7sādhakānām anīśvaratvā3dīnāṃ liṅginy apratītir iti na viparīta-sādhanatvam /

kulālā3dīnāṃ daṇḍa-cakrā3dy-adhiṣṭhānaṃ śarīra-dvāreṇai7va dṛṣṭam iti jagad-upādāno1pakaraṇā1dhiṣṭhānam īśvarasyā7-śarīrasyā7nupapannam iti cen na; saṃkalpa-mātreṇai7va para-śarīra-gata-bhūta-vetāla-garalā3dy-apagama-vināśa-darśanāt / katham a-śarīrasya para-pravartana-rūpas saṃkalpa iti cet; na śarīrā1pekṣas saṃkalpaḥ, śarīrasya saṃkalpa-hetu-tvā1bhāvāt / mana eva hi saṃkalpa-hetuḥ / tad-abhyupagatam īśvare 'pi; kāryatvenai7va jñāna-śaktivan manaso 'pi prāptatvāt / mānasas saṃkalpas sa-śarīrasyai7va, sa-śarīrasyai7va sa-manaskatvād iti cen na; manaso nityatvena dehā1pagame 'pi manasas sad-bhāvenā7naikāntyāt /

ato vicitrā1vayava-sanniveśa-viśeṣa-tanu-bhuvanā3di-kārya-nirmāṇe puṇya-pāpa-para-vaśaḥ parimita-śakti-jñānaḥ kṣetra-jño na prabhavatī7ti nikhila-bhuvana-nirmāṇa-caturo 'cintyā1parimita-jñāna-śakty-aiśvaryo '-śarīraḥ saṃkalpa-mātra-sādhana-pariniṣpannā1nanta-vistāra-vicitra-racana-prapañcaḥ puruṣa-viśeṣa īśvaro 'numānenai7va siddhyati / ataḥ pramāṇā1ntarā1vaseyatvād brahmaṇo nai7tad-vākyaṃ brahma pratipādayati /

kiṃ ca, atyanta-bhinnayor eva mṛd-dravya-kulālayor nimitto1pādānatva-darśanena ākāśā3der niravayava-dravyasya kāryatvā1nupapattyā ca nai7kam eva brahma kṛtsnasya jagato nimittam upādānaṃ ca pratipādayituṃ śaknotī7ti //

evaṃ prāpte brūmaḥ --- yatho9kta-lakṣaṇaṃ brahma janmā3di-vākyaṃ bodhayaty eva / kutaḥ? śāstrai1ka-pramāṇakatvād brahmaṇaḥ / yad uktaṃ sā1vayavatvā3dinā kāryaṃ sarvaṃ jagat, kāryaṃ ca tad-ucita-kartṛ-viśeṣa-pūrvakaṃ dṛṣṭam iti nikhila-jagan-nirmāṇa-tad-upādāno1pakaraṇa-vedana-caturaḥ kaścid anumeya iti; tad ayuktam; mahī-mahārṇavā3dīnāṃ kāryatve 'pi ekadai9vai7kenai7va nirmitā ity atra pramāṇā1bhāvāt / na cai7kasya ghaṭasye7va sarveṣām ekaṃ kāryatvam, yenai7kadai9kaḥ kartā syāt / pṛthag-bhūteṣu kāryeṣu kāla-bheda-kartṛ-bheda-darśanena kartṛ-kālā1ikya-niyamā1darśanāt / na ca kṣetra-jñānāṃ vicitra-jagan-nirmāṇa-śaktyā kāryatva-balena tad-atirikta-kalpanāyām aneka-kalpanā2nupapatteś ca ekaḥ kartā bhavitum arhatī7ti; kṣetra-jñānām evo7pacita-puṇya-viśeṣāṇāṃ śakti-vaicitrya-darśanena teṣām evā7tiśayitā1dṛṣṭa-saṃbhāvanayā ca tat-tad-vilakṣaṇa-kārya-hetutva-saṃbhavāt, tad-atiriktā1tyantā1dṛṣṭa-puruṣa-kalpanā2nupapatteḥ / na ca yugapat sarvo1tpattis sarvo1cchittiś ca pramāṇa-padavīm adhirohataḥ; adarśanāt, krameṇai7vo7tpatti-vināśa-darśanāc ca / kāryatvena sarvo1tpatti-vināśayoḥ kalpyamānayoḥ darśanā3nuguṇyena kalpanāyāṃ virodhā1bhāvāc ca / ato buddhimad-eka-kartṛkatve sādhye kāryatvasyā7naikāntyam, pakṣasyā7prasiddha-viśeṣaṇatvam, sādhya-vikalatā ca dṛṣṭāntasya; sarva-nirmāṇa-caturasyai7kasyā7prasiddheḥ / buddhimat-kartṛkatva-mātre sādhye siddha-sādhanatā / sārvajñya-sarva-śakti-yuktasya kasyacid ekasya sādhakam idaṃ kāryatvaṃ kiṃ yugamad-utpadyamāna-sarva-vastu-gatam ? uta krameṇo7tpadyamāna-sarva-vāstu-gatam ? yugapad-utpadyamāna-sarva-vastu-gatatve kāryatvasyā7siddhatā / krameṇo7tpadyamāna-sarva-vastu-gatatve aneka-karṭrkatva-sādhanād viruddhatā / atrā7py eka-karṭrkatva-sādhane pratyakṣā1numāna-virodhaś śāstra-virodhaś ca; kumbha-kāro jāyate, ratha-kāro jāyata ity-ādi-śravaṇāt / api ca sarveṣāṃ kāryāṇāṃ śarīrā3dīnāṃ ca sattvā3di-guṇa-kārya-rūpa-sukhā3dy-anvaya-darśanena sattvā3di-mūlatvam avaśyā3śrayaṇīyam / kārya-vaicitrya-hetu-bhūtāḥ kāraṇa-gatā viśeṣās sattvā3dayaḥ; teṣāṃ kāryāṇāṃ tan-mūlatvā3pādanaṃ tad-yukta-puruṣā1ntaḥkaraṇa-vikāra-dvāreṇa, puruṣasya ca tad-yogaḥ karma-mūlaḥ --- iti kārya-viśeṣā3rambhāyai7va jñāna-śaktivat kartuḥ karma-saṃbandhaḥ kārya-hetutvenai7vā7vaśyā3śrayanīyaḥ; jñāna-śakti-vaicitryasya ca karma-mūlatvāt / icchāyāḥ kāryā3rambha-hetutve 'pi viṣaya-viśeṣa-viśeṣitāyās tasyās sattvā3i-mūlakatvena karma-saṃbandho 'varjanīyaḥ / ataḥ kṣetra-jñā eva kartāraḥ, na tad-vilakṣaṇaḥ kaścid anumānāt sidhyati / bhavanti ca prayogāḥ --- tanu-bhuvanā3di kṣetra-jña-kartṛkam, kāryatvāt, ghaṭavat / īśvaraḥ kartā na bhavati, prayojana-śūnyatvāt, muktā3tmavat / īśvaraḥ kartā na bhavati, a-śarīratvāt, tadvad eva / na ca kṣetra-jñānāṃ sva-śarīrā1dhiṣṭhāne vyabhicāraḥ, tatrā7py anādes sūkṣma-śarīrasta sad-bhāvāt/ vimati-viṣayaḥ kālo na loka-śūnyaḥ, kālatvāt, vartamāna-kālavad iti /

api ca, kim īśvaras sa-śarīro 'śarīro vā kāryaṃ karoti ? na tāvad a-śarīraḥ; a-śarīrasya kartṛtvā1nupalabdheḥ / mānasāny api kāryāṇi sa-śarīrasyai7va bhavanti; manaso nityatve 'pi a-śarīreṣu mukteṣu tat-kāryā1darśanāt / nā7pi sa-śarīraḥ; vikalpā1sahatvāt --- tac-charīraṃ kiṃ nityam utā7nityam ? na tāvan nityam; sā1vayavasya tasya nityatve jagato 'pi nityatvā1virodhād īśvarā1siddheḥ / nā7py anityam; tad-vyatiriktasya tac-charīra-hetos tadānīm abhāvāt / svayam eva hetur iti cen na; a-śarīrasya tad-ayogāt; anyena śarīreṇa sa-śarīra iti cen na; anavasthānāt /

sa kiṃ sa-vyāpāro nirvyāpāro vā ? a-śarīratvād eva na sa-vyāpāraḥ / nā7pi nirvyāpāraḥ kāryaṃ karoti muktā3tmavat / kāryaṃ jagad icchā-mātra-vyāpāra-kartṛkam ity ucyamāne pakṣasyā7prasiddha-viśeṣaṇatvam, dṛṣṭāntasya ca sādhya-hīnatā /

ato darśanā3nuguṇyene8śvarā1numānaṃ darśanā3nuguṇya-parāhatam iti śāstrai7ka-pramāṇakaḥ para-brahma-bhūtas sarve3śvaraḥ puruṣo1ttamaḥ / śāstraṃ tu sakale1tara-pramāṇa-paridṛṣṭa-samasta-vastu-visajātīyaṃ sārvajñya-satya-saṃkalpatvā3di-miśrā1navadhikā1tiśayā1parimito1dāra-guṇa-sāgaraṃ nikhila-heya-pratyanīka-sva-rūpaṃ pratipādayatī7ti na pramāṇā1ntarā1vasita-vastu-sādharmya-prayukta-doṣa-gandha-prasaṅgaḥ /

yat tu nimitto1pādānayor aikyam ākāśā3der niravayava-dravyasya kāryatvaṃ cā7nupalabdham aśakya-pratipādanam ity uktam, tad apy aviruddham iti prakṛtiś ca pratijñā-dṛṣṭāntā1nuparodhāt, na viyad-aśruter ity atra pratipādayiṣyate / ataḥ pramāṇā1ntarā1gocaratvena śāstrai1ka-viṣayatvād yato vā imāni bhūtānī7ti vākyam ukta-lakṣaṇaṃ brahma pratipādayatī7ti siddham //1,1.3//
