     niyatir vidhāya puṃsāṃ prathamaṃ sukham upari dāruṇaṃ duḥkham /
     kṛtvā lokaṃ taralā taḍid iva vajraṃ nipātayati // BaHcar_5.1 //

     pātayati mahā-puruṣān samam eva bahūn an-ādareṇâiva /
     parivartamāna ekaḥ kālaḥ śailān ivân-antaḥ // BaHcar_5.2 //

atha kadā-cid rājā Rājya-vardhanaṃ kavaca-haram āhūya Hūṇān hantuṃ hariṇān iva harir hariṇêśa-kiśoram a-parimita-balânuyātaṃ ciraṃ-tanair amātyair anuraktaiś ca mahā-sāmantaiḥ kṛtvā sâbhisaram uttarā-pathaṃ prāhiṇot.

prayāntaṃ ca taṃ devo Harṣaḥ kati-cit prayāṇakāni turaṅgamair anuvavrāja.
praviṣṭe ca Kailāsa-prabhā-bhāsinīṃ kakubhaṃ bhrātari vartamāno nave vayasi vikrama-rasânurodhini kesari-śarabha-śārdūla-varāha-bahuleṣu tuṣāra-śailôpakaṇṭheṣûtkaṇṭhamāna-vana-devatā-kaṭâkṣâṃśu-śārita-śarīra-kāntiḥ krīḍan mṛgayāṃ mṛga-locanaḥ katipayāny ahāni bahir eva vyalambata.
cakāra câkarṇântâkṛṣṭa-kārmuka-nirgata-bhāsura-bhalla-varṣī svalpīyobhir eva divasair niḥ-śvāpadāny araṇyāni.

ekadā tu vāsateyyās turīye yāme pratyuṣasyêva svapne caṭula-jvālā-puñja-piñjarī-kṛta-sakala-kukubhā dur-nivāreṇa dava-huta-bhujā dahyamānaṃ kesariṇam adrākṣīt.
tasminn eva ca dāva-dahane samutsṛjya śāvakān utplutya câtmānaṃ pātayantīṃ siṃhīm apaśyat.
āsīc câsya cetasi loke hi lohebhyaḥ kaṭhinatarāḥ khalu sneha-mayā bandhana-pāśā yad ākṛṣṭās tiryañco 'py evam ācāranti iti.
prabuddhasya câsya muhur-muhur dakṣiṇêtaram akṣi paspande.
gātreṣu câkasmād eva vepathur vipaprathe.
nir-nimittam evântar-bandhana-sthānāc cacālêva hṛdayam.
a-kāraṇād eva câjāyata garīyasī duḥkhâsikā.
kim idam iti ca samutpanna-vividha-vikalpa-vimathita-matir apagata-dhṛtiś cintā-vana-mita-vadanaḥ stimita-tārakeṇa cakṣuṣā samudbhidyamāna-sthalakamalinī-vanām iva cakāra cakorêkṣaṇaḥ kṣanaṃ kṣoṇīm.
ahni ca tasmiñ śūnyenaiva ca cetasā cikrīḍa mṛgayām.
ārohati ca harita-haye madhyam ahno bhavanam āgatyôbhayato manda-mandaṃ saṃvāhyamāna-tanu-tāla-vṛntaḥ kṣiti-tala-vitatām ati-śiśira-malayaja-rasa-lava-lulita-vapuṣam indu-dhavalôpadhāna-dhāriṇīṃ vetra-paṭṭikām adhiśayānaḥ sâśaṅka eva tasthau.

atha dūrād eva lekha-garbhayā nīlī-rāga-mecaka-rucā cīra-cīrikayā racita-muṇḍa-mālakaṃ śramâtapābhyām āropyamāṇa-kāya-kālimānam antar-gatena śoka-śikhinâṅgāratām iva nīyamānam ati-tvarā-gamana-drutatara-padôddhūyamāna-dhūli-rāji-vyājena rāja-vārtā-śravaṇa-kutūhalinyā medinyêvânugamyamānam abhimukha-pavana-preṅkhat-pravitatôttarīya-paṭa-prānta-vījyamānôbhaya-pārśvam atitvarayā kṛta-pakṣam ivâśu parāpatantaṃ preryamāṇam iva pṛṣṭhataḥ svāmy-ādeśenâkṛṣyamāṇam iva purastād āyataiḥ śrama-śvāsa-mokṣaiḥ svidyal-lalāṭa-taṭa-ghaṭamāna-pratibimbakena kārya-kautukād apahriyamāṇa-lekham iva bhāsvatā saṃbhrama-bhraṣṭair ivêndriyaiḥ śūnyī-kṛta-śarīraṃ lekhârpita-prayojana-gauravād iva same 'pi vartmani śūnya-hṛdayatayā skhalantaṃ kāla-megha-śakalam iva patiṣyato dur-vārtā-vajrasya dhūma-pallavam iva jvaliṣyataḥ śoka-jvalanasya bījam iva phaliṣyato duṣ-kṛta-śāler a-nimitta-bhūta-dīrghâdhvagaṃ Kuraṅgaka-nāmānam āyantam adrākṣīt.

dṛṣṭvā ca pūrva-nimitta-paramparâvir-bhāvita-bhītir abhidyata hṛdayena.
Kuraṅgakas tu kṛta-praṇāmaḥ samupasṛtya prathamam ānana-lagnaṃ viṣādam upaninye paścāl lekham.
taṃ ca devo Harṣaḥ svayam evâdāyâvācayat.
lekhârthenaiva ca samaṃ gṛhītvā hṛdayena saṃtāpam avagraha-rūpo 'bhyadhāt.
Kuraṅgaka kiṃ māndyaṃ tātasya iti.
sa cakṣuṣā bāṣpa-jala-bindubhir mukhena ca khañjâkṣaraiḥ kṣaradbhir yugapad ācacakṣe deva dāha-jvaro mahān iti.
tac câkarṇya sahasā sahasradhêvâsya hṛdayaṃ paphāla.
kṛtâcamanaś ca janayitur āyuṣ-kāmo 'parimita-maṇi-kanaka-rajata-jātam ātma-paribarham aśeṣaṃ brāhmaṇasād akarot.
abhukta evôccacāla.
dāpaya vājinaḥ paryāṇam iti ca puraḥ-sthitaṃ śiraḥ-kṛpāṇaṃ bibhrāṇaṃ babhāṇa yuvānam.
vepamāna-hṛdayaś ca sa-saṃbhrama-pradhāvita-parivardhakôpanītam āruhya turaṅgam ekāky eva prāvartata.

a-kāṇḍa-prayāṇa-saṃjñā-śaṅkha-kṣubhitaṃ tu saṃbhramāt sajjī-bhūtam udbhūta-mukhara-khura-rava-bharita-sakala-bhuvana-vivaram āgatyâgatya sarvābhyo digbhyo dhāvamānam aśvo 'yam aḍhaukata.
prasthitasya câsya pradakṣiṇêtaraṃ prayānto vināśam upasthitaṃ rāja-siṃhasya hariṇāḥ prakaṭayāṃ-babhūvuḥ.
a-śiśira-raśmi-maṇḍalâbhimukhaś ca hṛdayam avadārayann iva dāva-śuṣke dāruṇi dāruṇaṃ rarāṇa vāyasaḥ.
kajjala-maya iva bahu-divasam upacita-bahala-mala-paṭala-malinita-tanur abhimukham ājagāma śikhi-picchālâñchano nagnâṭakaḥ.
dur-nimittair an-abhinandyamāna-gamanaś ca nitarām aśaṅkata.
hṛdayena pitṛ-snehâhita-mradimnā ca tat tad upekṣamāṇas turaṅgama-skandha-baddha-lakṣyaṃ cakṣur a-vicalaṃ dadhāno duḥkham avasita-hasita-saṃkathas tūṣṇīṃ-bhūtena bhūpāla-lokenânugamyamāno bahu-yojana-saṃpiṇḍitam adhvānam ekenaivâhnā samalaṅghayat.
Upalabdha-narêndra-māndya-vārtā-viṣaṇṇa iva naṣṭa-tejasy adhomukhī-bhavati bhagavati bhānumati bhaṇḍi-pramukhena praṇayinā rāja-putra-lokena bahuśo vijñāpyamāno 'pi nâhāram akarot.
puraḥ-pravṛtta-pratīhāra-gṛhyamāṇa-grāmīṇa-paramparā-prakaṭita-praguṇa-vartmā ca vahann eva ninye niśām.

anyasminn ahani madhyaṃdine vigata-jaya-śabdam astam-ita-tūrya-nādam upasaṃhṛta-gītam utsāritôtsavam a-pragīta-cāraṇam a-prasāritâpaṇa-paṇyaṃ sthāna-sthāneṣu pavana-bala-kuṭilābhiḥ koṭi-homa-dhūma-lekhābhir ullasantībhir yama-mahiṣa-viṣāṇa-koṭibhir ivôllikhyamānaṃ kṛtânta-pāśa-vāgurābhir iva veṣṭyamānam upari kāla-mahiṣâlaṃkāra-kālāyasa-kiṅkiṇībhir iva kaṭu kvaṇantībhir divasaṃ vāyasa-maṇḍalībhir bhramantībhir āvedyamāna-pratyāsannâśubhaṃ kva-cit pratiśāyita-snigdha-bāndhavârādhyamānâhirbudhnaṃ kva-cid dīpikā-dahyamāna-kula-putraka-prasādyamāna-mātṛ-maṇḍalaṃ kva-cin muṇḍôpahāra-haraṇôdyata-draviḍa-prārthyamānâmardakaṃ kva-cid āndhrôddhriyamāna-bāhu-vaprôpayācyamāna-caṇḍikam anyatra śiro-vidhṛta-vilīyamāna-galad-guggulu-vikala-nava-sevakânunīyamāna-mahā-kālam aparatra niśita-śastrī-nikṛttâtma-māṃsa-homa-prasaktâpta-vargam aparatra prakāśa-nara-pati-kumāraka-kriyamāṇa-mahā-māṃsa-vikraya-prakramam upahatam iva śmaśāna-pāṃśubhir a-maṅgalair iva parigṛhītaṃ yātu-dhānair iva vidhvastaṃ kali-kālenêva kavalitaṃ pāpa-paṭalair iva saṃchāditam a-dharma-vikṣepair iva luṇṭhitam a-nityatâdhikārair ivâkrāntaṃ niyati-vilāsair ivâtmī-kṛtaṃ śūnyam iva suptam iva muṣitam iva vilakṣitam iva chalitam iva mūrcchitam iva skandhâvāraṃ samāsasāda.

praviśann eva ca vipaṇi-vartmani kutūhalâkula-bahala-bālaka-parivṛtam ūrdhva-yaṣṭi-viṣkambha-vitate vāma-hasta-vartini bhīṣaṇa-mahiṣâdhirūḍha-preta-nātha-sanāthe citravati paṭe para-loka-vyatikaram itara-kara-kalitena śarakāṇḍena kathayantaṃ yama-paṭṭikaṃ dadarśa.
tenaiva ca gīyamānaṃ ślokam aśṛṇot.

     mātāpitṛ-sahasrāṇi putra-dāra-śatāni ca /
     yuge yuge vyatītāni kasya te kasya vā bhavān // BaHcar_5.3 //

tena câdhikataram avadīryamāṇa-hṛdayaḥ krameṇa rāja-dvāraṃ pratiṣiddha-sakala-loka-praveśaṃ yayau.
turagād avatīrṇaś câbhyantarān niṣkrāmantam a-prasanna-mukha-rāgam unmuktam ivêndriyaiḥ Suṣeṇa-nāmānaṃ vaidya-kumārakam adrākṣīt.
kṛta-namaskāraṃ ca tam aprākṣīt.
Suṣeṇa asti tātasya viśeṣo na vā iti.
so 'bravīt: nâstîdānīṃ yadi bhavet kumāraṃ dṛṣṭvā iti.
mandaṃ mandaṃ dvāra-pālaiḥ praṇamyamānaś ca dīyamāna-sarvasvaṃ pūjyamāna-kula-devataṃ prārabdhâmṛta-caru-pacana-kriyaṃ kriyamāṇa-ṣaḍ-āhuti-homaṃ hūyamāna-pṛṣadājya-lava-lipta-pracala-dūrvā-pallavaṃ paṭhyamāna-mahā-māyūrī-pravartyamāna-gṛha-śānti-nirvartyamāna-bhūta-rakṣā-bali-vidhānaṃ prayata-vipra-prastuta-saṃhitā-japaṃ japyamāna-rudraikādaśī-śabdāyamāna-śiva-gṛham ati-śuci-śaiva-saṃpādyamāna-vi-rūpâkṣa-kṣīra-kalaśa-sahasra-snapanam a-jirôpaviṣṭaiś cânāsādita-svāmi-darśana-dūyamāna-mānasair abhyantara-niṣpatita-nikaṭa-varti-parijana-nivedyamāna-vārtair vārtī-bhūta-snāna-bhojana-śayanair ujjhitâtma-saṃskāra-malina-veśair likhitair iva niś-calair nara-patibhir nīyamāna-naktaṃ-divaṃ duḥkha-dīna-vadanena ca praghaṇeṣu baddha-maṇḍalenôpāṃśu-vyāhṛtaiḥ kena-cic cikitsaka-doṣān udbhāvayatā kena-cid a-sādhya-vyādhi-lakṣaṇa-padāni paṭhatā kena-cid duḥ-svapnān āvedayatā kena-cit paśāca-vārtāṃ vivṛṇvatā kena-cit kārtāntikâdeśān prakāśayatā kena-cid upaliṅgāni gāyatā anyenânityatāṃ bhāvayatā saṃsāraṃ câpavadatā kali-kāla-vilasitāni ca nindatā daivaṃ côpālabhamānenâpareṇa dharmāya kupyatā rāja-kula-devatāś câdhikṣipatā apareṇa kliṣṭa-kula-putraka-bhāgyāni garhayatā bāhya-parijanena kathyamāna-kaṣṭa-pārthivâvasthaṃ rāja-kulaṃ viveśa.

a-virala-bāṣpa-payaḥ-paripluta-locanena pitṛ-parijanena vīkṣyamāṇo vividhauṣadhi-dravya-drava-gandha-garbham utkvathatāṃ kvāthānāṃ sarpiṣāṃ tailānāṃ ca prapacyamānānāṃ gandham ājighrann avāpa tṛtīyaṃ kakṣyântaram.

dṛṣṭvā ca prathama-duḥkha-saṃpāta-mathyamāna-matir āśaṅkita iva bhāga-dheyebhyaḥ samabhavat.
antaka-pura-vartinam eva ca pitaram amanyata.
nirākṛta iva cântaḥkaraṇena kṣaṇam āsīt.
avadhūtaś ca dhairyeṇa kṣetrī-kṛtaḥ kṣobheṇa riktī-kṛto ratyā viṣayī-kṛto viṣādena pāvaka-mayam iva hṛdayam udvahan viṣama-vidūṣitānîva muhyantîndriyāṇi bibhrāṇas tamasā rasā-talam api viśeṣayan śūnyatvenâkāśam apy atiśayāno nâvindata kartavyam.
pasparśa ca hṛdayena bhiyam uttamâṅgena ca gām.

avani-patis tu dūrād eva dṛṣṭvâtidayitaṃ tanayaṃ tad-avastho 'pi nirbhara-snehâvarjitaḥ pradhāvamāno manasā prasārya bhujau ehy ehi ity āhvayan śarīrârdhena śayanād udagāt.
sa-saṃbhramam upasṛtaṃ cainaṃ vinayâvanamram unnamayya balād urasi niveśya viśann iva premṇā niśā-kara-maṇḍala-madhyaṃ majjann ivâmṛta-maye mahā-sarasi snāpayann iva mahati hari-candana-rasa-prasravaṇe 'bhiṣicyamāna iva tuṣārâdri-draveṇa pīḍayann aṅgair aṅgāni kapolena kapolam avaghaṭṭayan nimīlayan pakṣmâgra-grathitâjasrâsra-visrāviṇī vilocane vismṛta-jvara-saṃjvaraḥ su-ciram āliliṅga.
kathaṃ katham-api cirād vimuktam apasṛtya kṛta-namaskāraṃ praṇata-jananīkam upāgatam āsīnaṃ ca śayanântike pibann iva vigata-nimeṣa-niścalena cakṣuṣā vyalokayat.
pasparśa ca punaḥ punar vepathumatā pāṇi-talena kṣaya-kṣāma-kaṇṭhaś ca kṛcchrād ivâvadīt: vatsa kṛśo 'si iti.
bhaṇḍis tv akathayat: deva tṛtīyam ahaḥ kṛtâhārasyâsyâdya iti.

tac chrutvā bāṣpa-vega-gṛhyamāṇâkṣaraṃ kathaṃ katham apy āyataṃ niḥśvasyôvāca vatsa jānāmi tvāṃ pitṛ-priyam ati-mṛdu-hṛdayam.
īdṛśeṣu vidhurayati dhīmato 'pi dhiyam.
ati-durdharo bāndhava-snehaḥ sarva-pramāthī.
yato nârhasy ātmānaṃ śuce dātum.
uddāma-mahā-dāha-jvara-dagdho 'pi dahye khalv aham adhikataram anenâyuṣmad-ādhinā.
niśitam iva śastraṃ takṣṇoti māṃ tvadīyas tanimā.
sukhaṃ ca rājyaṃ ca vaṃśaś ca prāṇāś ca paralokaś ca tvayi me sthitāḥ.
yathā mama tathā sarvāsāṃ prajānām.
tvad-vidhānāṃ pīḍāḥ pīḍayanti sakalam eva bhuvana-talam.
na ny alpa-puṇya-bhājāṃ vaṃśam alaṃ-kurvanti bhavādṛśāḥ phalam asyâneka-janmântarôpārjitasyâkaluṣasya karmaṇaḥ.
kara-tala-gatam iva kathayanti caturṇām apy arṇavānām ādhipatyaṃ te lakṣaṇāni.
tvaj-janmanaiva kṛtârtho 'smi.
nir-abhilāṣo 'smi jīvitavye.
bhiṣag-anurodhaḥ pāyayati mām auṣadham.
api ca vatsa sarva-prajā-puṇyaiḥ sakala-bhuvana-tala-paripālanârtham utpatsyamānānāṃ bhavādṛśāṃ janma-grahaṇôpāyaḥ pitarau.
prajābhis tu bandhumanto rājāno na jñātibhiḥ.

kṛtâhāre ca tvayy aham api svayam upayokṣye pathyam ity evam abhihitasya câsya dhakṣyann iva hṛdayam atitarāṃ śokânalaḥ saṃdudhukṣe.
kṣaṇa-mātraṃ ca sthitvā pitrā punar āhārârtham ādiśyamāno dhavala-gṛhād avatatāra.
cakāra ca cetasi akāṇḍe khalv ayaṃ samupasthito mahā-pralayo vyabhra iva vajra-pātaḥ.
sāmānyo 'pi tāvac chokaḥ sôcchvāsaṃ maraṇam anupadiṣṭauṣadho mahā-vyādhir a-bhasmī-karaṇo 'gni-praveśo 'nuparatasyaiva naraka-vāso nir-jyotir-aṅgāra-varṣam a-śakalī-karaṇaṃ krakaca-dāraṇam a-vraṇo vajra-sūcī-pātaḥ.
kim uta viśeṣa-śritaḥ.
kim atra karavāṇi iti.

rāja-puruṣeṇâdhiṣṭhitaś ca gatvā sva-dhāma dhūma-mayān iva kṛtâśru-pātān agni-mayān iva janita-hṛdaya-dāhān viṣa-mayān iva datta-mūrcchā-vegān.
mahā-pātaka-mayān ivôtpādita-ghṛṇān kṣāra-mayān ivânīta-vedanān kati-cit kavalān agṛhṇāt.
ācāmaṃś ca cāmara-grāhiṇam ādideśa.
vijñāyâgaccha katham āste tāta iti.
gatvā ca pratinivṛttya ca deva tathaiva iti vijñāpitas tenâgṛhīta-tāmbūla evôttāmyatā manasâstâbhilāṣiṇi savitari sarvān āhūyôpahvare vaidyān kim asminn evaṃvidhe vidheyam adhunā iti viṣaṇṇa-hṛdayaḥ papraccha.
te tu vyajñāpayan deva dhairyam avalambasva.
katipayair eva vāsaraiḥ punaḥ svāṃ prakṛtim āpannaṃ svasthaṃ śroṣyasi pitaram iti.

teṣāṃ tu bhiṣajāṃ madhye paunarvasavo yuvâṣṭādaśa-varṣa-deśīyas tasminn eva rāja-kule kula-kramâgato gataḥ paramparām aṣṭâṅgasyâyur-vedasya bhūbhujā suta-nir-viśeṣaṃ lālitaḥ prakṛtyaivâti-paṭīyasyā prajñayā yathāvad-vijñātā vyādhi-svarūpāṇāṃ Rasāyano nāma vaidya-kumārakaḥ sâsras tuṣṇīm adho-mukho 'bhūt.
pṛṣṭaś ca rāja-sūnunā sakhe Rasāyana kathaya tathyaṃ yad a-sādhv iva paśyasi iti.

viṣaṇṇa-loka-locana-pratyudgatā côpasṛtya kuṭṭima-nyasta-hasta-yugalā galantībhiḥ siñcantîva śuṣyantaṃ daśana-dīdhiti-dhārābhir ādhūsaram adharam adho-mukhī vijñāpitavatī deva paritrāyasva paritrāyasva.

āsīc câsya cetasi pratipanna-saṃjñasya bahuśo 'pi hṛdaye duḥkhâbhiṣaṅgo nipatann aśmanîva loha-prahāraḥ kaṭhine huta-bhujam utthāpayati na tu bhasmasāt-karoti me nir-anukrośasya kāyam iti.

mayā vinâdyânāthā bhavasi bhagini bhavana-dāḍima-late.
raktâśoka marṣaṇīyāḥ pāda-prahārāḥ karṇa-pūra-pallava-bhaṅgâparādhāś ca.
putraka antaḥpura-bāla-bakulaka vāruṇī-gaṇḍūṣa-grahaṇa-dur-lalita dṛṣṭo 'si.
vatse priyaṅgu-latike gāḍham āliṅga māṃ durlabhā bhavāmi te.
bhadra bhavana-dvāra-sahakāraka dātavyo nivāpa-toyâñjalir apatyam asi.
bhrātaḥ pañjara-śuka yathā na vismarasi māṃ kiṃ vyāharasi dūrī-bhūtâsmi te śārike svapne naḥ samāgamaḥ punar bhūyāt.
mātar mārga-lagnaṃ kasya samarpayāmi gṛha-mayūrakam amba sutaval lālanīyam idaṃ haṃsa-mithunaṃ manda-puṇyayā mayā na saṃbhāvito 'sya cakravāka-yugalasya vibāhôtsavaḥ.

dūrād eva ca bāṣpāyamāṇa-dṛṣṭir abhyadhāt: amba tvam api māṃ manda-puṇyaṃ tyajasi prasīda nivartasva ity abhidadhāna eva ca sa-sneham iva nūpura-maṇi-marīcibhiś cumbyamāna-cūḍaś caraṇayor nyapatat.
devī tu Yaśomatī tathā tiṣṭhati pāpa-nihita-śirasi vi-manasi kanīyasi preyasi tanaye guruṇā giriṇêvôdvegâvegenâvaṣṭabhyamānā mūrcchândha-tamasaṃ rasā-talam iva praviśantī bāṣpa-pravāheṇêva cira-nirodha-saṃpiṇḍitena sneha-saṃbhāreṇa nirbharâvir-bhūtenâbhibhūyamānā kṛta-prayatnâpi nivārayituṃ na śaśāka bāṣpôtpatanam.
utkaṭa-kucôtkampa-prakaṭitâsahya-śokâkūtā ca gadgadikā-gṛhyamāṇa-gala-vikalā niḥ-sāmānya-manyu-taralī-kriyamāṇâdharôddeśā punar-ukta-sphuraṇa-nibiḍita-nāsā-puṭā nimīlya nayane nayanâmbhaḥ-seka-plavena plāvayantī vimalau kapolau saṃcchādya kara-nakha-mayūkha-mālā-khacita-tanunā tanv-antara-nirgacchad-acchâsra-srota-sevâṃśuka-paṭântena kiṃ-cid uttānitaṃ vadanênduṃ dūyamāna-mānasā smarantī prasnuta-stanī prasava-divasād ārabhya sakalam aṅka-śāyinaḥ śaiśavam asya jñāti-gṛha-gata-hṛdayā amba tāta na paśyataṃ pāpāṃ para-loka-prasthitāṃ mām evam ati-duḥkhitām iti muhur muhur ākrandatī pitarau hā vatsa viśrānta-bhāga-dheyayā na dṛṣṭo 'si iti preṣṭhaṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ tanayam a-saṃnihitaṃ krośantī a-nāthā jātā iti śvaśura-kula-vartinīṃ duhitaram anuśocantī niṣ-karuṇa kim aparāddhaṃ tavâmunā janena iti daivam upālabhamānā nâsti mat-samā sīmantinī duḥkha-bhāginī iti nindantī bahu-vidham ātmānaṃ muṣitâsmi kṛtânta nṛ-śaṃsa tvayā ity akāṇḍe kṛtântaṃ garhamāṇā mukta-kaṇṭham ati-ciraṃ prākṛta-pramadêva prārodīt.

pratyagra-dṛṣṭa-dāruṇa-duḥkha-dagdhāyāś ca me kiṃ dhakṣyati dhūma-dhvajaḥ.
maraṇāc ca me jīvitam evâsmin samaye sāhasam.

Kailāsa-kalpe pravasati jīvêśvare jarat-tṛṇa-kaṇikā-laghīyasi jīvite lobha iti kva ghaṭate 'pi ca jīvantīm api māṃ nara-pati-maraṇâvadhīraṇa-mahā-pātakinīṃ na sprakṣyanti putra putra-rājya-sukhāni.
duḥkha-dagdhānāṃ ca bhūtir a-maṅgalā câ-praśastā ca nir-upayogā ca bhavati.
vatsa viśvastānāṃ yaśasā sthātum icchāmi loke na vapuṣā.
tad aham eva tvāṃ tāvat tāta prasādayāmi na punar manoratha-prātikūlyena kad-arthanīyâsmi.

sa tu sa-saṃbhramam apanīya caraṇa-yugalam avanamita-tanur ubhaya-kara-vidhṛta-vapuṣam avani-tala-gata-śirasam udanamayan mātaram.
dur-nivāratāṃ ca śucaḥ samavadhārya kula-yoṣid-ucitāṃ ca tām eva śreyasīṃ manyamānaḥ kriyāṃ kṛta-niścayāṃ ca tāṃ jñātvā tūṣṇīm adho-mukho 'bhavat.

abhinandanti hi sneha-kātarâpi kulīnatā deśa-kālânurūpam.

itaro 'pi mātṛ-maraṇa-vihvalo bandhu-varga-parivṛtaḥ pituḥ pārśvaṃ prāyāt.
apaśyac ca svalpâvaśeṣa-prāṇa-vṛttiṃ parivartyamāna-tārakaṃ tāraka-rājam ivâstam abhilaṣantaṃ janayitāram.
a-sahya-śokôdrekâbhidrutaś ca tyājitaḥ snehena dhairyam.
āśliṣyâsya sakala-durmada-mahī-pāla-mauli-mālā-lālitau pāda-padmāv antas-tāpān mukha-candram iva dravī-bhavantaṃ daśana-jyotsnā-jālam iva jalatām āpadyamānaṃ locana-lāvaṇyam iva vilīyamānaṃ mukha-sudhā-rasam iva syandamānam acchâccham aśru-srotasāṃ saṃtānaṃ mahā-megha-maya-vilocana iva varṣan nitaravad-vimuktârāvaś ciraṃ ruroda.

rājā tu tam uparudhyamāna-dṛṣṭir a-virata-rudita-śabdâśrita-śravaṇaḥ pratyabhijñāya śanaiḥ śanair avādīt.

ātmī-kriyatāṃ rājakam iti guṇa-gaṇâtmī-kṛta-jagato gatârtham iva.
uhyatāṃ rājya-bhāra iti bhuvana-traya-bhāra-vahanôcitasyânucita-viyoga iva.
prajāḥ parirakṣyantām iti dīrgha-dor-daṇḍârgalita-diṅ-mukhasyânuvāda iva.
parijanaḥ paripālyatām iti loka-pālôpamasyânuṣaṅgikam iva.
sātatyena śastrâbhyāsaḥ kārya iti dhanur-guṇa-kiṇa-kalaṅka-kālī-kṛta-prakoṣṭhasya kim ādiśyate.
nigrāhyatāṃ cāpala-jātam iti nūtanatara-vayasi nigṛhītêndriyasya nir-avakāśêva me vāṇī.
nir-avaśeṣatāṃ śatravo neyā iti sahajasya tejasa evêyaṃ cintā.
ity evaṃ vadann evâ-punar-unmīlanāya nimimīla rāja-siṃho locane pratyapadyata ca pūṣâtmajaḥ.

devo 'pi Harṣaḥ puñjī-bhūtena sakalenêva jīva-lokena lokena rāja-kula-saṃbaddhenâ-śeṣeṇa śoka-mūkena parivṛto 'ntar-vartinâpi śokânala-taptena sneha-draveṇa bahir iva sicyamāno nirvyavadhānāyāṃ dharaṇyām upaviṣṭa eva tāṃ niśīthinīṃ Bhīmarathī-bhīmām akhilāṃ sa-rājako jajāgāra.
ajani câsya cetasi tāte dūrī-bhūte saṃpraty etāvān khalu jīva-loko lokasya bhagnāḥ panthāno manorathānāṃ khilī-bhūtāni bhūti-sthānāni sthagitāny ānandasya dvārāṇi suptā satya-vāditā luptā loka-yātrā vilīnā bāhu-śālitā pralīnā priyâlāpitā proṣitāḥ puruṣa-kāra-vihāra-vikārāḥ samāptā samara-śauṇḍatā dhvastā para-guṇa-prītir viśrāntā viśvāsa-bhūmayo 'padāny apadānāni nir-upayogāni śāstrāṇi nir-avalambanā vikramaika-rasatā kathâvaśeṣā viśeṣa-jñatā dadātu jano jalâñjalim aurjityāya pratipadyatāṃ pravrajyāṃ prajā-pālatā badhnātu vaidhavya-veṇīṃ vara-manuṣyatā samāśrayatu rāja-śrīr āśrama-padaṃ paridhattāṃ dhavale vāsasī vasumatī vahatu valkale vilāsitā tapasyatu tapo-vaneṣu tejasvitā prāvṛṇotu cīvare vīratā kva gamyatāṃ punas tasya kṛte kṛta-jñatayā kva punaḥ prāpsyati tādṛśān mahā-puruṣa-nirmāṇa-paramâṇūn paramêṣṭhī śūnyāḥ saṃvṛttā daśa diśo guṇānāṃ jagaj jātam andhakāraṃ dharmasya niṣ-phalam adhunā janma śastrôpajīvinām.
tātena vinā kutas tyās tādṛśyo divasam asama-samara-rasa-samārabdha-kalaha-kathā-kaṇṭakita-subhaṭa-kapola-bhittayo vīra-goṣṭhyaḥ.
api nāma svapne 'pi dṛśyeta dīrgha-rakta-nayanaṃ punas tan-mukha-sarojaṃ janmântare 'pi punaḥ pariṣvajyeta tal-loha-stambhâbhyadhika-garima-garbhaṃ bhuja-yugalam.
lokântare 'pi putrêty ālapataḥ punaḥ punaḥ śrūyeta sā sudhā-rasam udgirantī mathyamāna-kṣīra-sāgarôdgāra-gambhīrā bhāratîti.
etāni cânyāni ca cintayata evâsya katham api sā kṣayam iyāya yāminī.

tataḥ śucêva mukta-kaṇṭham āraṭatsu kṛkavāka-kuleṣu gṛha-giri-taru-śikharebhyaḥ pātayatsv ātmānaṃ mandira-mayūreṣu parityakta-nija-nivāseṣu ca vanāya prasthiteṣu patra-ratheṣu sadyas-tanū-bhūte tāmyati tamasi mandī-bhūtâtma-sneheṣv a-bhāvam abhilaṣatsu pradīpeṣu sphurad-aruṇa-kiraṇa-valkala-prāvṛta-vapuṣi pravrajyām iva pratipanne nabhasi prabhāta-samayena samuttīryamāṇāsu pārthivâsthi-śakala-kalāsv iva kalaviṅka-kaṃdharā-dhūsarāsu tārakāsu bhū-bhṛd-dhātu-garbha-kumbha-dhāriṣu vividha-saraḥ-sarit-tīrthâbhimukheṣu prasthiteṣu vana-kari-kuleṣu śāva-śuci-siktha-paṭala-pāṇḍure piṇḍa ivâpara-payo-nidhi-pulina-parisare pātyamāne śaśini krameṇa ca nṛpa-citânala-dhūma-visara-dhūsarī-kṛta-tejasîva nara-pati-śoka-pāvaka-dāha-kiraṇa-kalaṅka-kālī-kṛta-cetasîva proṣita-samastântaḥpura-puraṃdhri-mukha-candra-vṛndôdvega-vidrāṇa-vapuṣîva prathamâstam-ita-rohiṇī-raṇaraṇaka-vimanasîva câstam-upagate rāja-nikare rājatîva deve divam ārūḍhe savitari parivṛtte rājya iva rajanī-prabandhe prabuddha-rāja-haṃsa-maṇḍala-prabodhyamānaḥ paṅkajâkara iva cacāla snānāya devo Harṣaḥ.
tataś ca nūpura-rava-virāma-mūka-manda-mandira-haṃseṣu śokâkula-katipaya-kañcuki-mātrâvaśeṣeṣu śuddhânteṣu patita-yūthapa iva vana-gaja-yūthe kakṣyântara-vartini pitṛ-parijane viṣādiny upari-rudan-niṣādini ca stambha-niṣaṇṇe niṣpanda-mande rāja-kuñjare mandurā-pālakâkranda-kathite câjira-bhāji rāja-vājini viśrānta-jaya-śabda-kalakale ca śūnye ca mahā-sthāna-maṇḍape dahyamāna-dṛṣṭir nirjagāma rāja-kulāt.

apasnātaś câ-niṣpīḍita-maulir eva paridhāyôdgamanīya-dukūla-vāsasī niḥśvāsa-paro nir-ātapatro nir-utsāraṇaḥ samupanīte 'pi saptau caraṇābhyām eva nāsâgrâsaktena rakta-tāmarasa-tāmreṇa cakṣuṣā hṛdayâvaśeṣasyâpi pitur dāha-śaṅkayā śokâgnim iva udgirann a-tāmbūlasyâpi sucira-prakṣālitasya kalpa-taru-kisalaya-komalasyêva sva-bhāva-pāṭalasyâdharasyâdhara-pallavasya prabhayā māṃsa-rudhira-kavalān iva hṛdayâbhighātād udvamann uṣṇa-niḥśvāsa-mokṣair bhavanam ājagāma.

rāja-vallabhās tu bhṛtyāḥ suhṛdaḥ sacivāś ca tasminn evâhani nirgatya priyaṃ putra-dāram utsṛjyôdbāṣpair bandhubhir vāryamāṇā api bahu-nṛpa-guṇa-gaṇa-hṛta-hṛdayāḥ ke-cid ātmānaṃ bhṛguṣu babandhuḥ ke-cit tatraiva tīrtheṣu tasthuḥ ke-cid anaśanair āstīrṇa-tṛṇa-kuśā vyathamāna-mānasāḥ śucam asamām aśamayan ke-cic chalabhā iva vaiśvānaraṃ śokâvega-vivaśā viviśuḥ ke-cid dāruṇa-duḥkha-dahana-dahyamāna-hṛdayā gṛhīta-vācas tuṣāra-śikhariṇaṃ śaraṇam upāyayuḥ ke-cid vindhyôpatyakāsu vana-kari-kula-kara-śīkarâsāra-sicyamāna-tanavaḥ pallava-śayana-śāyinaḥ saṃtāpam aśamayan ke-cit saṃnihitān api viṣayān utsṛjya sevā-vimukhāḥ paricchinnaiḥ piṇḍakair aṭavī-bhuvaḥ śūnyā jagṛhuḥ ke-cit pavanâśanā dharma-dhanā dhamad-dhamanayo munayo babhūvuḥ ke-cid gṛhīta-kāṣāyāḥ kāpilaṃ matam adhijagire giriṣu ke-cid ācoṭita-cūḍā-maṇiṣu śiraḥsu śaraṇī-kṛta-Dhūrjaṭayo jaṭā jaghaṭire.
apare pari-pāṭala-pralamba-cīvarâmbara-saṃvītāḥ svāmy-anurāgam ujjvalaṃ cakruḥ.
anye tapo-vana-hariṇa-jihvâñcalôllihyamāna-mūrtayo jarāṃ yayuḥ.
apare punaḥ pāṇi-pallava-pramṛṣṭair ātāmra-rāgair nayana-puṭaiḥ kamaṇḍalubhiś ca vāri vahanto gṛhīta-vratā muṇḍā viceruḥ.
devam api Harṣaṃ tad-avasthaṃ pitṛ-śoka-vihvalī-kṛtaṃ śriyaṃ śāpa iti mahīṃ mahā-pātakam iti rājyaṃ roga iti bhogān bhuj-aṅgā iti nilayaṃ niraya iti bandhuṃ bandhanam iti jīvitam a-yaśa iti dehaṃ droha iti kalyatāṃ kalaṅka iti āyur a-puṇya-phalam iti āhāraṃ viṣam iti viṣam a-mṛtam iti candanaṃ dahana iti kāmaṃ krakaca iti hṛdaya-sphoṭanam abhyudaya iti ca manyamānaṃ sarvāsu kriyāsu vimukhaṃ pitṛ-pitāmaha-parigrahâgatāś ciraṃ-tanāḥ kula-putrāḥ vaṃśa-kramâhita-gauravāś ca grāhya-giro guravaḥ śruti-smṛtîtihāsa-viśāradāś ca jarad-dvijātayaḥ śrutâbhijana-śīla-śālino mūrdhâbhiṣiktāś câmātyā rājāno yathāvad-adhigatâtma-tattvāś ca saṃstutā maskariṇaḥ sama-duḥkha-sukhāś ca munayaḥ saṃsārâsāratva-kathana-kuśalā brahma-vādinaḥ śokâpanayana-nipuṇāś ca paurāṇikāḥ paryavārayan.

a-svatantrī-kṛtaś ca tair manasâpi nâlabhata śokânupravaṇam ācaritum.
pracura-mitrânunīyamānaś ca sanābhibhiḥ kathaṃ katham apy āhārâdikāsu kriyāsv ābhimukhyam abhajata.
bhrātṛ-gata-hṛdayaś câcintayat: api nāma tātasya maraṇaṃ mahā-pralaya-sadṛśam idam upaśrutya āryo bāṣpa-jala-snāto na gṛhṇīyād valkale.
nâśrayed vā rāja-rṣir āśrama-padam.
na viśed vā puruṣa-siṃho giri-guhām.
aśru-salila-nirbhara-bharita-nayana-nalina-yugalo vā paśyed a-nāthāṃ pṛthivīm.
prathama-vyasana-viṣama-vihvalaḥ smared ātmānaṃ vā puruṣôttamaḥ.
a-nityatayā janita-vairāgyo vā na nirākuryād upasarpantīṃ rājya-lakṣmīm.
dāruṇa-duḥkha-dahana-prajvalita-deho vā pratipadyetâbhiṣekam.
ihâgato vā rājabhir abhidhīyamāno na parācīnatām ācared iti.
ati-pitṛ-pakṣa-pātī khalv āryaḥ.
sarvadā tāta-ślāghayā mām abhidhatte tāta Harṣa kasya-cid abhūd bhaviṣyati vā punaḥ kāñcana-tāla-taru-prāṃśu kāya-pramāṇam idam īdṛk ca divasa-kara-prītyā divasam-unmukha-vikasitaṃ mukha-mahā-kamalam.
etau ca vajra-stambha-bhāsvarau bhuja-kāṇḍau.
ete ca hasita-madâlasa-Haladhara-vibhramā vilāsāḥ ko 'nyo mānī vikrānto vadānyo vā iti.
etāni cânyāni ca cintayan darśanôtsuka-hṛdayo bhrātur āgamanam udīkṣamāṇaḥ kathaṃ katham apy atiṣṭhad iti.

iti mahā-kavi-Śrī-Bāṇa-Bhaṭṭa-kṛtau Harṣa-carite mahā-rāja-maraṇa-varṇanaṃ nāma pañcama ucchvāsaḥ.
