evaṃ tāvat prathame vimarśe dhvanilakṣaṇaṃ dūṣayitvā dhvaniśāstragataṃ granthāntaraṃ dūṣayituṃ sāmānyena tāvat kāvyagatam anaucityollāsarūpaṃ dūṣaṇaprapañcam upapādayitum āha - iha khalv ityādinā / uktam iti sahṛdayaiḥ / antaraṅgam iti sākṣād rasaviṣayatvāt / ādyair iti dhvanikāraprabhṛtibhiḥ / tad uktam -

     anaucityād ṛte nānyad rasabhaṅgasya kāraṇam /
     prasiddhaucityabandhas tu rasasyopaniṣat parā //

ityādinā / bahiraṅgam iti vācyamukhena rase paryavasānād vidheyaḥ prādhānyena pratipipādayiṣito yo 'rthas tasya avimarśo 'nanusaṃdhānam upasarjanīkaraṇāt / prakramaḥ kasya cid vastuno nirvāhāyārambhas tasya bhedo madhye 'nyathīkaraṇam anyathānirvāhaś ca / kramasya paripāṭyā bheda ullaṅghanaṃ vyutkrama iti yāvat / paunaruktyaṃ punaḥpratipādanam / vācyasya vaktavyasya avacanam anuktiḥ / etā avāntarabhedabhinnāḥ pañca dūṣanajātayaḥ /

yad etad ihagranthakṛtā vicārasaraṇim āśritya vidheyāvimarśādidoṣapañcakam udbhāvitaṃ, na tatrādyatanapuruṣamātrabuddhipraṇayanāsūyayānādaraḥ karaṇīyaḥ / pūrvair evaṃvidhadoṣodbhāvanarūpasya vicārasya praṇītatvāt / tathā hi / dāsyāḥ putra ityādāv ākrośe ṣaṣṭhyā alukaṃ pratipādayatā sūtrakṛtā vidheyāvimarśaḥ sūcita eva / tathā svāmīśvarādhipatidāyādety atra sūtre na hi bhavati gavāṃ svāmī aśveṣu ca iti vadatā bhāṣyakṛtā spaṣṭam eva prakramabhedaḥ pratipāditaḥ / tathā kṛñcānuprayujyate liṭi iy atrānuprayogasyānuśabdaparyālocanayā vyavahitapūrvaprayogaṃ taṃ pātayāṃ prathamam āsa ityādau niṣedhatā cādīnāṃ ca na hi bhavati ca vṛkṣaḥ ityādinā prayoganiyamakhyāpanena dyotakatvaṃ kathayatā asthānaprayogalakṣaṇaḥ kramabhedaḥ kaṭākṣita eva / tathā karmadhārayamatvarthīyābhyāṃ bahuvrīhir laghutvāt syād iti vṛttilāghavaṃ cintayatā kātyāyanena paunaruktyam api prakāśitam eva / tathā īṣad asamāptau ity atra pratijñānasamadhigamyaṃ sūtrakāroktaṃ rūpakalakṣaṇam arthaṃ dūṣayatā prakṛtyarthasadṛśe kalpavādividhānam iti pratijñānasamadhigamyārthabhūtām upamāṃ vyavasthāpayatopamāśrayeṇa vācyāvacanam api dyotitam eva / etena rūpakāśrayeṇāvācyavacanam api dyotitam eva / tad evaṃ mahāviduṣāṃ mārgam anusṛtya sahṛdayaśikṣādarāya vicārayandaraṃto 'sya mahāmater na kaś cit paryanuyogaleśasyāpy avasara ity alam atiprasaṅgena /

etasya ceti sāmānyenānaucityasya / doṣā iti kāvyasya vikṛtatvāpādanād dūṣaṇād doṣā iti / mugdha iti pṛṣṭasyāprativikṛtatve trīṇi kāraṇāni / prativacanāpratibhānalakṣaṇaṃ maugdhyaṃ pratibhāne 'py aprauḍharūpatvam asahyatvam / prauḍhatve 'pi guṇāsahiṣṇutvalakṣaṇaṃ mātsaryam / tāny atra saṃdihyamānatayā krameṇoktāni / yaḥ kilety atraiva cchedaḥ / chātrābhyarthanayeti praṣṭṛtvasyāṅgīkṛtam iti prativaktṛtvasya ca nirdeśaḥ / paurobhāgyaṃ doṣaikagrāhitvam / nanu yadi parakīye kāvye parihārāya doṣāṇāṃ vicāraḥ kriyate, tat kiṃ nijakāvye na teṣāṃ parihāraḥ / tathā ca bhajate mātsaryamaunaṃ nu kim ity ato 'nantaram iti pṛṣṭa ity evaṃ krameṇetiśabdo nirdeśyaḥ kramāntareṇa nirdeśāt kramabhedo na yujyate / evam anyat śokāpadānādau jñeyam / tadartham āha - svakṛtiṣv iti kṛtiḥ kāvyam /

saṃrambha iti kutsitāḥ kariṇaḥ karikīṭāḥ kutsitāni kutsanaiḥ iti samāsaḥ / karikīṭānām āśādviradaiḥ pratinirdeśaḥ / meghaśakalānāṃ tu kalpāntatoyadaiḥ ya ity atraiva cchedaḥ / ayaṃ śloko vakroktijīvite vitatya vyākhyāta iti tata evāvadhāryaḥ / tāvacchabdo vidheyāvimarśatrayasyaitacchlokagatasyopakramadyotakaḥ / saṃbandhopapatter iti / ayaṃ bhāvaḥ - samarthaḥ padavidhiḥ iti vacanāt samāsaḥ sāmarthyanimittakaḥ / sāmarthyaṃ ca saṅgatārthatvaṃ, saṅgatatvaṃ ca saṃbandhaḥ / sa cātra viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvaḥ / paryudāsasyaiva viśeṣaṇaṃ nañā abrāhmaṇa iti yathā / na cātra vakṣyamāṇanyāyena paryudāso ghaṭata iti / nanv abrāhmaṇa ityādau nañ kathaṃ viśeṣaṇam / viśeṣaṇaṃ hi viśeṣyasyoparañjakaṃ bhavati / na ca nañśabdo viruddhatvād vidhim uparañjayati / tat katham asya viśeṣaṇatvam / naitat / abrāhmaṇa ityādau brāhmaṇaśabdo brāhmaṇasadṛśe kṣatriyādau vartate / sā cākṣatriyādau brāhmaṇaśabdasya vṛttir nañā dyotyate / tad uktam - nañ ivayuktam anyasadṛśādhikaraṇe tatha hy artha iti / tatra ca śabdaśaktisvābhāvyaṃ kāraṇam / yathā caitat tathā nañsūtrabhāṣyād avaseyam /
pradhānatvam iti / yatra vidheḥ prādhānyaṃ pratiṣedhasyāprādhānyaṃ naña uttarapadena saṃbandhaḥ samarthasamāsa ekavākyatvaṃ ca tatra paryudāsaḥ kiṃ cid varjayitvā kasya cid upadeśo nirāsa iti nigamanāt / tatra kārikāyāṃ trayaṃ nirdiṣṭaṃ dvayaṃ cākṣipyate / jugopeti / atra nañarthaviśiṣṭasyottarapadārthasya vidhir na trastatvādiniṣedhaḥ / tatrāpy atrastatvādeḥ siddhatvāt tadanuvādena gopanādi vidhīyata iti paryudāsatvam / aprādhānyam iti / yatra pratiṣedhasya prādhānyaṃ vidher aprādhānyyaṃ nañaḥ kriyāpadena saṃbandho 'samarthasamāsaḥ vākyabhedaś ca, tatra prasajya prāpayya pratiṣedha iti prasajyapratiṣedhaḥ / atra kārikāyāṃ traye nirdiṣṭe 'nyad dvayam ākṣiptam / na veti / atra dṛptaniśācaraṃ prati niṣedhaḥ pratīyate, na tv adṛptaniśācaravidhir iti prasajyapratiṣedhatā / saṃrambhavatpratiṣedho hy atreti / saṃrabdhavān yaḥ puruṣas tadgatā yeyaṃ saṃrabdhatā saṃrambhaṇakriyā tasyā vakṣyamāṇanyāyena pratiṣedha ity arthaḥ / asaṃradhavadvidhir iti saṃrabdhavatsadṛśasya saṃrambhasadṛśakriyākarttur udāsīnaprāyasya vidhir ity arthaḥ / yad uktaṃ nañ iva yuktam ityādi / tatreti saṃrabdahavatpratiṣedhe / na cāsāv iti pratiṣedhati / tatsiddhipakṣa iti vivakṣito yaḥ pradhānabhūtaniṣedhalakṣaṇo 'rthasya siddhipakṣa ity arthaḥ / asya vidhyanuvādabhāvasyeti / nañarthasya vidhir uttarapadārthasyānuvāda ity asya / samāse hi nañarthopasarjana uttarapadārthaḥ prādhānyena pratīyate / kāvyārtheti / atra vyavacchedyaṃ prasajyapratiṣedhaṃ pradarśya paricchedyaṃ paryudāsam udāharati /

nanu prasajyapratiṣedhe nañaḥ kriyānvaye 'saṃrabdahavān ity atra saṃrambhakriyāniṣedho bhaviṣyati / tat ko 'tra doṣa ity āha: kriyākartraṃśabhāg iti / ayaṃ bhāvaḥ: asaṃrabdhavān ity atra dvāv aṃśau kriyāṃśaḥ kārakāṃśaś ca / tatrobhayāṃśabhāgarthaniṣedhe śabdaśaktisvābhāvyād vākye kriyāṃśaniṣedhas tasya prādhānyena vivakṣitasyāparāmarśam anuktād vidheyāvimarśaḥ / yathā ca prasajyapratiṣedhe samāso neṣṭas tathoktanayena paryudāse 'py asamāso neṣyata ity āha - nanu sādhv iti atra na kurvateti karaṇakriyākartṛsadṛśena kriyāṃ praty udāsīnaprāyeṇety arthaḥ / akurvateti vācye na kurvateti kriyāṃśaniṣedhaḥ pratīter vaiparītyakārī / evaṃ nocitam apīty ucitatvamātraniṣedhaḥ pratīter vaiparītyakṛd eva / tacchravaṇaṃ kriyāśravaṇam / tayor iti siddhārthā vṛttiḥ / sādhyārthaṃ vākyam / asūryaṃpaśyādiṣv iti / atrāpi nañaḥ sūryeṇottarpadārthena nābhisaṃbandhaḥ, api tu taddraṣṭrarthenaiva / tatrāpi kartraṃśaḥ pradhānaṃ na kriyāṃśaḥ karttari khaśo vidhānād iti pūrvavad avaseyam / bhuṅkta iti atra hi vākyasya kriyāprādhānyaṃ pratīyamānabhavatyādikriyāpekṣe nañaḥ samanvaye śrāddhabhojī na bhavatīti vākyārthaḥ / aśrāddhabhojīty atra tu nañā bhoktus samanvaye śrāddhabhoktṛvyatirikto 'pi vighasāśyā+i++ pratīyate / yataś cātrāśrāddhabhojītyādau samāse pratiṣedho neṣṭaḥ, tata eva samarthasamāsas tadviparyayeṇāsamarthasamāsaś ca kārikādvayenoktaḥ / vākyabhedābhedayos tu sāmarthyāt pratītir ity avacanam /

evakemaṃ vidheyāvimarśaṃ vicārya dvitīyam udāharati - yo 'sāv ity atreti tacchabdaṃ praty ākāṅkṣāyāḥ kenāpy anivarttanāt / ekatareti kvacid yacchabdenopakrame tacchabdenopasaṃhāraḥ / kva cit tacchabdenopakrame yacchabdenopasaṃhāraḥ prasajyate / etac ca dvayaṃ śābdopakramopasaṃhārakrameṇodāhariṣyati / tayor apīti / apiśabdo nañarthaṃ samuccinoti / prasajyapratiṣedhe hi nañartho vidheyo niṣedhyo 'rtho 'nuvādyaḥ / paryudāse tu viparyaya ity uktaṃ prāg / anuvādyavidheyeti / yattador nityābhisaṃbandhe 'pi śabdaśaktisvābhāvyād yado 'nuvādyaviṣayatvaṃ tado vidheyaviṣayatvam / nityatvād iti / apekṣāprāṇatayāvasthānāt / śābda iti śabdenobhayoḥ saṃsparśād / ubhayoḥ saṃsparśābhāva ārthatvam / tatra dvayī gatiḥ - anyatarānupādānaṃ dvayor anupādānaṃ vā / anyatarānupādanam api yattadāśrayabhāvena dvidhā / krameṇa caitad udāhariṣyati / upakalpito nityasāpekṣatvād upasthāpitaḥ / atra ca prasiddhādiviṣayatvaṃ yadā nirdiṣṭam / sā kalā yā prasiddheti sphuṭatvena pratīteḥ / kva cit tado 'pi vyapadiśyate, tasya yacchabdenaikaviṣayatvāt / te iti ye mayaivānubhūte ity arthaḥ / anviyeṣa sa iti / atra sa iti yaḥ prakrānta ity arthaḥ / upāttavastv iti vakṣyamāṇaśloke ko 'pīti yad upāttaṃ vastu tadviṣayatvenety arthaḥ / asya upakramopasaṃhārasya prakrāntavastuviṣayasya /

tacchabdāt prayogātiprasaṅganiyamaṃ prakāśayan parihāryaṃ viṣayaṃ pradarśayati / - yas tv ekavākya iti / ekavākyagrahaṇena parāmamṛśyasya pratyakṣāyamāṇatoktā / tataś ca vākyabhede na doṣaḥ / kartṛtveneti prādhānyaṃ sūcayati aprādhānyasya parāmarśo na duṣyatīti khyāpanārtham / sa ity arthaḥ parāmṛṣṭaḥ / tebhya iti kartṛtvavācakād idamādibhyaś ca / asau tacchabdaḥ / asamanvayād iti tacchabdasya parokṣārthapratipādakatve saṃbandhavirodhād ity arthaḥ / tādātmyāyeti / śaśikalāmaulisvarūpatvāyety arthaḥ / ārtha iti upakramopasaṃhārakramā nirdiṣṭaḥ / kalpitatatkramādīti / kalpitaṃ tad yac chabdanirdiṣṭaṃ karmādi viṣayo 'syeti yacchabdārthaḥ karmakaraṇāditayā viṣayatvenāsya kalpita ity arthaḥ / saṃbandhadvaividhyeti śābdārthabhedena dvaividhyam / yattad iti / yacchabdasamīpe samānādhikaraṇas tacchabda upādīyamānaḥ śabdaśaktisvābhāvyāt prasiddhavastuviṣayaṃ yacchabam ākāṅkṣati / vaiyadhikaraṇyena vyavadhānena ca nirdeśe tu nirdiṣṭenaiva yadā samanvayaṃ bhajate / na kevalaṃ yo mahato 'pabhāṣate, śṛṇoti tasmād api yaḥ sa pāpabhāg ity atra yady api yaḥ sa iti yattador nairantaryeṇa sāmānādhikaraṇyena ca nirdeśaḥ, tathāpi na yat tad ūrjitam iti nyāyena tacchabdo yacchabdāntaraṃ praty apekṣāyām iha yadi tacchabdo nirantaropāttayacchabdāpekṣayaiva prayujyate, tadā syād eṣa doṣaḥ, yāvatā na kevalaṃ ya ity atra yacchabdāpekṣayā vyavadhānena prādhānyāt prayuktas tacchabdāntarānākāṅkṣaḥ prasaṅgena nirantaranirdiṣṭayacchabdānvayaṃ bhajamānaḥ pūrvasaṃskāreṇa na tacchabdāntaram ākāṅkṣatīty anavadyam etat / tad itthaṃ yattador upakramopasaṃhārakramo dvividhaḥ parighaṭitaḥ / sa cātra śloke na yujyata ity āha - evaṃ ceti / tadupādāna iti / yacchabdo nātra tad eti prakrāntas tacchabdaḥ parāmṛśyate tatsaṃbandhapratītāv ity arthaḥ.

nanu prayogadarśanam evātra samarthakaṃ bhaviṣyatīty āśaṅkya prayogasya prāmādikapāṭhaviparyāsahetukatvam āha - mīlitam iti / tadabhinnārthaḥ tacchabdābhinnārthaḥ / tasya adaśśabdasya / tacchabdābhinnārthatve 'daśśabdasya dūṣaṇadvayam uktam / kevalādaśśabdapryoge asau marud ityādau yacchabdākāṅkṣā syād ity ekaṃ yacchabdasahāyasyādaśśabdasya prayoge yo 'sau jagattrayetyādau prayuktatacchabdākāṅkṣā na syād iti dvitīyam / atra yasya prakopetyadaśśabdarahitayacchabdaprayogo dṛṣṭāntatvenokto yathāsya kevalasya tacchabdākāṅkṣā tathādaśśabdayuktasyāpīty arthaḥ / parikalpyata iti tasya yathoktavastv iti yathā avigānena śiṣṭaprasiddhipāraṃparyeṇoktaṃ vastu tacchabdārthavivikto viṣayas tasya tanmate asaṃbhavaḥ / tvayā hy adaśśabdasya tacchabdārthatvam ucyate tatra yacchabdaparāmarśāpekṣāprasaṅgaḥ ity arthaḥ / parikalpyata iti prayogapravāhaprāmāṇyānyathānupapattyāvāyātayārthāpattyety arthaḥ / tam antareṇeti / tacchabdena prayogapravāhaḥ parāmṛṣṭaḥ / tadatadarthatvaniścayo vivakṣitāvivakṣitārthatvaniścayaḥ / yadi tu tām iti tadabhinnārthatānupapattiḥ parāmṛṣṭā / gate 'nugataṃ yasya sa gatānugatikaḥ / matvarthīyo 'tra ṭhanpratyayaḥ / yenaiva pathā eko gacchati tenaivāvicāritenaiva yo gacchati sa ity arthaḥ / tato bhāvapratyayaḥ / avikalpam ity akārapraśleṣaḥ / niśśaṅkam ity arthaḥ / yad vā na vikalpamātreṇa, api tu sākṣād ity arthaḥ / smṛtibhūḥ kāmaḥ / dvitīyaḥ smṛtibhūśabdaḥ smaraṇaviṣaye prayuktaḥ / dagdhatvāt smṛtimātraśeṣa ity arthaḥ / kṣatāt vadhāt / vyavahitānām eveti yathā yo 'vikalpam ityādau / avyavahitatve veti / yathā smṛtibhūr ityādau / etadartham evodāharaṇadvayam uktam /

tatra hīti idamādisahitaprayoge / tayor iti yattadoḥ / taditareti yadṛcchayaikataraprayoge anyatarāpekṣety arthaḥ / sutarām iti idamādisāhityena prayukto yacchabdaḥ svabhāvato vikāsitāsya eva tacchabdaṃ pratīkṣate, evaṃ tacchabdo 'pi yacchabdam iti jñeyam / etac ca krameṇodāhṛtaṃ yad etad iti, so 'yam iti ca / tad anyena granthena pradarśaka upayujyate tadvad asya yacchabdasya na prakrāntaparāmarśe saṃbandho, nāpi prakraṃsyamānavastusamanvayamārgopadeśe tacchabdādhyāhāraḥ śaraṇam / sa ca satkāvyakalaṅkāyamāno heya eva anuktvaiveti yattador madhye parāmṛśyam anuktvā yatra nirantaraḥ prayogaḥ yathā yat tad ūrjitam ityādau tatra tayor yattador yathāyogaṃ punaḥ prayogo na duṣyati yatha nūnaṃ tad api hāritam ityādau / tathā tayor yattadoḥ / nirantaranirdiṣṭeṣv idamādiṣu satsu tayor yattadoḥ teṣām idamādīnāṃ ca saṅghaṭitatvena sthitānāṃ yathāyogaṃ yattadoḥ pratyavekṣā na nivarttate yathā aprayukteṣv idamādiṣu kevalayoḥ pṛthagavasthitayor apekṣā na nivarttate tadvat prayukteṣv apīty arthaḥ yathā yad etac candrāntar iti, so 'yaṃ paṭa iti ca / evaṃ prakṛte 'pi yo 'sāv iti / tatsāṅkaryeti / yacchabdasya pṛthag idamādisāhitye tacchabdasya ca pṛthag idamādisāhitye yattadoḥ parasparasāhitye ca bahavo bhedāḥ, teṣām udāharaṇeṣu diṅmātraṃ darśitam /

saṃprati prāyeṇa vākyārthasamanvayavyāpinor yattador yo 'yaṃ nityābhisaṃbandhatvenopakramopasaṃhārakramaḥ, sa prasaṅgād vicāryate / sa ca puṣṭāpuṣṭaduṣṭabhedena trividhaḥ / puṣṭo 'pi prathamaṃ śābdatvārthatvabhedena dvividhaḥ / śābdo 'pi yacchabdopakramas tacchabdopakramaś ceti dvividhaḥ / ārtho 'pi yacchabdamātrānupādāne tacchabdasyopāttasya prasiddhānubhūtaprakrāntaviṣayeṇa yadābhisaṃbandhāt trividhaḥ / yacchabdasya ca tacchabdānupādāne kevalam upāttasya prakrāntaviṣayeṇa kalpitatatkarmādiviṣayeṇa ca tadābhisaṃbandhād dvividhaḥ / ubhayānupādāne tu dvayor upāttavastuviṣayatākalpana eka eva bhedaḥ / evaṃ śābdo dvividha ārthaḥ ṣaḍbheda ity aṣṭavidho yattador upakramopasaṃhārakramaḥ puṣṭaḥ / tac caitac ceha granthakṛtodāhṛtam / yat tadūrjitam ityādau tu śābdasyārthasya copasaṃhārakramasya saṅkīrṇatvam iti nāsya pṛthagbhāvaḥ / apuṣṭasya duṣṭamadhye prasaṅgena varṇayiṣyamāṇatvād idānīṃ duṣṭo vyākriyate / tatra yattadoḥ sthāne tacchabdayacchabdanairantaryeṇa sāmānādhikaraṇyena cedamādīnaṃ duṣṭataiva teṣām atadarthatvāt tannikaṭe ca prayujyamānānāṃ prasiddhimātraparāmarśakatvād, yathā yo 'sau kutra camatkṛter iti / evaṃ tacchabdasācivyenedamādīnām udāharaṇam ūhyam / viprakṛṣṭatvena sannikṛṣṭatve 'pi vaiyadhikaraṇyena vā teṣām prayoge na duṣṭaṃ nāduṣṭam ity apuṣṭatvam eva yathā yo 'vikalpam iti smṛtibhūḥ smṛtibhūr iti ca / evaṃ tacchabdopakrama udāharttvayam / tathā tacchabdasya parokṣāyamāṇārthapratyavamarśitvād ekavākyasthapratyakṣāyamāṇapradhānabhūtārthapratyavamarśe duṣṭatvaṃ, yathā sa vaḥ śaśikalāmaulir ityādau / pradhānagrahaṇena na kartṛmātraṃ nirdiṣṭam, api tu kārakāntaram api prādhānyena vivakṣitatvāt pratyakṣāyamāṇam / tena

     sa medinīṃ vinirjitya caturjaladhimekhalām /
     sacivārpitatadbhāras tasyām āsta yathāsukham //

iti medinyās tacchabdaparāmarśo na sundara ity āhuḥ / yathā yattadoḥ padārthavākyārthagatatvena dvividhāvasthāne yad ekasya padārthaniṣṭhatvād anyasya vākyārthaviṣayatvaṃ tad bhinnaviṣayatvena nityābhisaṃbandhaparipanthi duṣṭam eva / yathā


     hemrāṃ bhāraśatāni vā madamucāṃ bṛndāni vā dantināṃ śrīharṣeṇa yad arpitāni guṇine bāṇāya kutrādya tat /
     yā bāṇena tu tasya sūktivisarair uṭṭaṅkitāḥ kīrttayas tat kalpapralaye 'pi yānti na manāṅ manye parimlānatām //

iti / yā iti padārthaviṣayatvam anipātasya tacchabdasya / tad iti tu vākyārthaviṣayas tacchabdaḥ / padārthaviṣaye tā iti syāt / atraiva yad bāṇena tu tasyeti tāḥ kalpapralaye 'pi iti ca pāṭhe yado vākyārthaviṣayatve tadaḥ padārthaniṣṭhatva udāharaṇaṃ deyam / tasmād yā bāṇena tv iti tāḥ kalpapralaye 'pīti ca paṭhanīyam / iha tu

     indīvaraṃ yadatasīkusumasya vṛttyā yat ketakaṃ jaraḍhabhūrjadalānuvṛttyā /
     yan manyase ca vakulaṃ karavīravṛttyā sā sāmprataṃ madhupa hanta tavaiva hāniḥ //

iti na kevalaṃ yacchabdo vākyārthaviṣaye, yāvat tacchabdo 'pi / yadi paraṃ sa vākyārtho hānipadena piṇḍīkṛtya prakāśitas tacchabdena parāmṛṣṭaḥ / ata evātra tacchabdasya vidheyapadārthābhiprāyeṇa strīliṅgatvam / anuvādyābhiprāyeṇa tu tat sāmpratam iti / ubhayathāpi liṅgaparigrahaḥ śiṣṭapravāhe sthitaḥ /

kiṃ ca yattador nityābhisaṃbandhād guṇapradhānayoś ca saṃbandhārhatvāt parāmṛśya ekatra yacchabdavākye tacchabdavākye vā nirdiṣṭa itaravākye tadā yadā vā pratyavamṛśyate / yacchabdavākye tu nirdiṣṭena yacchabdāntareṇa guṇānāṃ pradhānānāṃ ca parasparam abhisaṃbandhāt / evaṃ ca tathā parāmarśe dvau duṣṭābhedau / yathā:

     yeṣāṃ tās tridaśebhadānasaritaḥ pītāḥ pratāpoṣmabhir līlāpānabhuvaś ca nandanatarucchāyāsu yaiḥ kalpitāḥ /
     yeṣāṃ huṅkṛtayaḥ kṛtāmarapurakṣobhāḥ kṣapācāriṇāṃ kiṃ tais tvatparitoṣakāri vihitaṃ kiṃ cit pravādocitam //

iti / kṣapācāriṇām iti ṣaṣṭhyantaṃ yacchabdena saṃbaddhaṃ yacchadbāntareṇa partyavamṛṣṭam / kṣapācāribhir iti pāṭho nyāyyaḥ / evaṃ tacchabdavākye nirdiṣṭaṃ yacchabdaiḥ parāmṛśyamānaṃ na duṣyati, yathā ca:

     puṇḍrekṣoḥ paripākapāṇḍunibiḍe yo madhyame parvaṇi khyātaḥ kiṃ ca rasaḥ kaṣāyamadhuro yo rājajambūphale /
     tasyāsvādadaśāviluṇṭanapaṭur yeṣāṃ vacovibhramaḥ sarvatraiva jayanti citramatayas te bharttṛmeṇḍādayaḥ //

iti / atra dvitīye yacchabdavākye rasaḥ parāmṛśyo nirdiṣṭas tacchabdena parāmṛśyate / prathame yacchabdavākye tu yacchadaparāmarśo na yujyate dvayor asaṃbandhād, yathā:

     namo 'stu tābhyo bhuvane jayanti tāḥ sudhāmucas tāś ca kavīndrasūktayaḥ /
     bhavaikavicchedi kathāśarīratām upaiti yāsāṃ caritaṃ pinākinaḥ //

iti kavīndrasūktīnāṃ tacchabdavati vākyena nirdiṣṭānāṃ tacchabdāntareṇa parāmarśo na yuktaḥ / kiṃ ca yattacchabdayoḥ svabhāvena vākyabhedotthāpakatve yad ekataravākye 'nyatarat padaṃ prayujyānyatarat prayujyate tad api duṣṭam eva / yathā:

     aprākṛtasya caritātiśayaiś ca dṛṣṭair atyadbhutair apahṛtasya tathāpi nāsthā /
     ko 'py eṣa vīraśiśukākṛtir aprameyamāhātmyasārasam udāyamayaḥ padārthaḥ //


ity atra yady apīty apekṣitam / na ca tadekavākyatāyāṃ saṃbandhuṃ yogyam /

ekatrāpi vākye guṇakriyādigataṃ kalpitaṃ bhedam āśritya prakrāntavastuviṣayatacchabdaprayoge pradhānakriyāyāṃ parāmṛśyasya pradhānatvād eva svarūpeṇa nirdeśe guṇakriyādiviṣaye tu tacchabdena parāmarśe nyāyye yadviparyayakaraṇaṃ tad duṣṭam eva / yathā

     prajānām eva bhūtyarthaṃ sa tābhyo balim agrahīt /
     sahasraguṇam utsraṣṭum ādatte hi rasaṃ raviḥ //

iti / baliṃ prajābhyo jagrāha sa tāsām eva bhūtaye iti yuktaḥ pāṭhaḥ / tathaikaviṣayatve yattador ekasya dravyādiviṣayatve 'nyasya kālādigocaratve duṣṭam eva / yathā:

     tvam evaṃ saundaryā sa ca ruciratāyāḥ paricitaḥ kalānāṃ sīmānaṃ param iha yuvām eva bhajathaḥ /
     ayi! dvandvaṃ diṣṭyā tad iti subhage! saṃvadati vāmataḥ śeṣaṃ yat syāj jitam iha tadānīṃ guṇitayā //

atra ataḥ śeṣaṃ cet syād iti paṭhanīyaṃ cec chabdasya yadiśabdārthatvāt / tathā prakrāntaviṣayatve tacchabdasya vyavasthite tadviṣaye prakramyamāṇavastugocaratvaṃ doṣa eva / yathā:

     ye saṃtoṣasukhaprabuddhamanasas teṣāṃ na bhinno mado ye 'py ete dhanalobhasaṃkuladhiyas teṣāṃ tu dūre nṛṇām /
     itthaṃ kasya kṛte kṛtaḥ sa vidhinā tādṛk padaṃ saṃpadāṃ svātmany eva samāptahemamahimā merur na me rocate //

atra meruḥ prakramyamāṇaḥ sa ity anena parāmṛṣṭaḥ / etad vākyabheda udāharaṇam / ekavākye tu:

     tīrthe tadīye gajasetubandhāt pratīpagām uttarato 'sya gaṅgām /

iti deyam / tathā nirvīpsenaikenopakrame savīpsenānyena parāmarśo duṣṭa eva / yathā:

     yaḥ kalyāṇabahirbhūtaḥ sa sa durgatim aśnute /

savīpsena tv ekena prakrame nirvīpsenānyenopasaṃhāraḥ savīpsasya pratyavamṛṣṭatvād na duṣṭānvayaḥ kin tv apuṣṭa eva / yathā:

     kalyāṇānāṃ tvam asi mahasāmīśiṣe tvaṃ vidhatse puṇyāṃ lakṣmīm iha mayi ciraṃ dhehi deva! prasīda /
     yad yat pratijahi jagannātha! namrasya tan me bhadraṃ bhadraṃ vitara bhagavan! bhūyase maṅgalāya //

iti / atra yad yad iti nirdiṣṭaṃ kevalena tacchabdena parāmṛṣṭam / etad yacchabdasya savīpsasyodāharaṇam / tacchabdasya tu savīpsasya nirvīpsena parāmarśa udāharaṇaṃ yathā:

     kṣāntaṃ na kṣamayā gṛhocitasukhaṃ tyaktaṃ na santoṣataḥ soḍho dussahaśītavātatapanakleśo na taptaṃ tapaḥ /
     dhyātaṃ nityam ahar niśaṃ niyamitaprāṇair na śambhoḥ padaṃ tat tat karma kṛtaṃ yad eva munibhis tais taiḥ phalair vañcitāḥ //


iti / yatra tu savīpsasya prakrame savīpsena pratyavamarśas tatra puṣṭatvam eva yathā

     yo yaḥ śastraṃ bibhartti svabhujagurum adaḥ pāṇḍavīnāṃ camūnāṃ yo yaḥ pāñcālagotre śiśur adhikavayā garbhaśayyāṃ gato vā /
     yo yas tatkarmasākṣī carati mayi raṇe yaś ca yaś ca pradīptaḥ krodhāndhas tasya tasya svayam api jagatām antakasyāntako 'ham //

iti / yatra cānekasya savīpsasya cānekena pratyavamarśas, tatrāpi puṣṭatvam eva / yathā:

     yo yo yaṃ yam avāpnuyād avayavoddeśaṃ spṛśan pāṇinā tat tanmātrakam eva yatra sa sa te rūpaṃ paraṃ manyate /
     tajjātyandhapuraṃ ha hā karipate! nīto 'si durvedhasā ko nāmātra bhaved batākhilabhavan māhātmyavedī janaḥ //

iti / yadi paraṃ yaṃ yam iti prakrame tat tanmātrakam eveti pratyavamarśe vidheyāvimarśaḥ savīpsasya tadarthasya samāse guṇībhāvāt / naitat / mātragrahaṇenāvadhāraṇam ucyate yathā - prātipadikārthaliṅgaparimāṇavacanamātre iti / taccāvadhāryamāṇaparatantram ity avadhāryamāṇasyaiva savīpsasya tadarthasyodrekāt prādhānyam akhaṇḍitam eva / pūrvapadārthaprādhānyena kva cit supsupeti samāso dṛśyate, yathā:

     nirvāṇabhūyiṣṭham athāsya vīryaṃ sandhukṣayantīva vapur guṇena /
     anuprayātā vanadevatābhyām adṛśyata sthāvararājakanyā //

iti / atra hi bhūyiṣṭhaṃ nirvāṇaṃ nirvāṇabhūyiṣṭham iti samāse nirvāṇārthasyaiva prādhānyaṃ tasya vīryaviśeṣaṇatvenāvasthitatvād / na tadvad iha tattanmātrakam iti tadarthasya prādhānyaṃ bhaviṣyati / kevalaṃ kṛte 'vadhāraṇārthe mātraśabde kimarthaḥ kapratyayaḥ / tasminn api vā kṛte evaśabdaḥ kimarthaḥ / evaśabda eva vā kiṃ na kriyate / naitat / kapratyayasya tāvad atra kutsāpratipādakatvāt / na paunaruktyaṃ tan tameveti kevalaivaśabdaprayoge vikṣipta iva tadarthaḥ pratīyate / mātragrahaṇe tu piṇḍitasyaiva tadarthasya pratītir ity asti viśeṣaḥ / yadi paraṃ dvayor upādānaṃ lokapratītyanusaraṇena dṛḍhīkṛtāvadhāraṇapratītyartham / dṛśyate hīdṛśeṣu dvayor avadhāraṇapratipādakayoḥ prayogaḥ / yathā - bālā kevalam eva roditi galallolodakair aśrubhiḥ / atraiva tad iti nirvīpsena tadā nirdiṣṭaṃ jātyandhapuraṃ nirvīpsenaiva yadā pratyavamṛśyate / tataś cātrānuguṇaparāmarśān na doṣaḥ kaś cit /

tathā yatra pūrvavākye yacchabdo nirdiṣṭa uttaravākye tu na tacchabdo nirdiṣṭaḥ, tatra sākāṅkṣatvād duṣṭaiva yathā -

     mīlitaṃ yad abhirāmatādhike sādhu candramasi puṣkaraiḥ kṛtam /

iti / uttaravākyagatatvena tu yacchabdaprayoge pūrvavākye tacchabdaprayoge na duṣṭatvam, api tu prākpratipāditaṃ puṣṭatvam eva sāmānyenopakramāt paścād viśeṣasyotthāpanāt / etadabhiprāyeṇa kalpitatatkarmādiviṣayatvam uktam / udāharaṇaṃ tu sādhu candramasi puṣkaraiḥ kṛtaṃ mīlitaṃ yadabhirāmatādhike iti pūrvaślokārdhapāṭhaviparyaye yathā / yattacchabdayor aviśiṣṭe 'pi parāmarśakatve uttaravākye nirdiṣṭo yacchabdaḥ svabhāvata āvidūryeṇa pūrvavākyārthāśliṣṭatayā vastu parāmṛśati, tacchabdas tu parokṣāyamāṇārthaniṣṭhatvāt vaidūryeṇa / āvidūryaṃ ca prakṛtārthaṃ prakṛṣṭatāṃ nayad vākyārthaṃ śleṣayati / tataś ca tathābhūte viṣaye yacchabdasya prayogārhatve tacchabdasya prayogo 'puṣṭa eva.


     tasyāḥ śalākāñjananirmiteva kāntir bhruvor ānatarekhayor yā /
     tāṃ vīkṣya līlācaturām anaṅgaḥ svacāpasaundaryam adaṃ mumoca //

atra sā yāṃ vīkṣyeti yattadau viparyayeṇa paṭhanīyau / yathā ca:

     dṛṣṭir nāmṛtavarṣiṇī smitamadhuprasyandi vaktraṃ na kiṃ nārdrārdraṃ hṛdayaṃ na candanarasasparśāni vāṅgāni ca /
     kasmin labdhapadena te kṛtam idaṃ krūreṇa dagdhāgninā nūnaṃ vajramayo 'nya eva dahanas tasyedam āceṣṭitam //

atra yasyeti paṭhanīyam / yathā ca:

     ācāryo me sa khalu bhagavān asmadgrāhyanāmā tasmād eṣā dhanur upaniṣat tatprasādāt kṣamo 'pi /
     adhyāsīnaḥ katham aham aho vartma vaikhānasānāṃ sītāpāṇigrahaṇapaṇitaṃ cāpam āropayāmi //

atra ca yasmād eṣā dhanur upaniṣad iti paṭhanīyam / evaṃ ca prāg ukte hemno bhārataśatānītyādau tā bāṇena tu tasya sūktivisarair uṭṭaṅkitāḥ kīrtayo yāḥ kalpapralaye 'pi yānti na manāṅ manye parimlānatām iti paṭhanīyam / api ca parāmṛśyam anuktvā yacchabdena ca vākyārthopakrame tacchabdavati parāmṛśyanirdeśe pūrvavākyārthe parāmṛśyam aspṛśantī upaplavamānā pratītir iti vākyārthapratipattiviprakarṣād apuṣṭatvam / yathā:

     pādāhataṃ yad utthāya mūrdhānam adhirohati /
     svasthād evāvamānena dehinas tad varaṃ rajaḥ //

ata evātra ślokārdhayor viparyayapāṭhe puṣṭatvam eva / tathā pūrvavākyārthe nirdiṣṭasyārthasyottaravākyārthe sarvanāmamātreṇa parāmarśe nyāyye yaḥ svaśabdasahitasya sarvanāmno nirdeśaḥ sa duṣṭa eva / yathā:

     udanvacchinnā bhūḥ sa ca nidhir apāṃ yojanaśataṃ sadā pānthaḥ pūṣā gaganaparimāṇaṃ kalayati /
     iti prāyo bhāvaḥ sphuradavadhimudrāmukulitaḥ satāṃ prajñonmeṣaḥ punar ayam asīmā vijayate //

iti / atra sa ca nidhir apām iti sasvaśabdaḥ sarvanāmno nirdeśaḥ / evaṃ rāmagiryāśrameṣv iti prakṛte tasminn adrau kati cid ity atra jñeyam / atra tu ke cit samarthayante - rāmagiryāśrameṣv iti rāmagiriḥ samāsa upasarjanībhūto buddhāv udrekeṇānavabhāsāt kathaṃ sarvanāmnā parāmṛśyate sarvanāmnānusandhir vṛtticchannasyeti pradhānabhūtaparāmṛśyābhiprāyeṇa sthitaṃ yathā samyagjñānapūrvikā sarvapuruṣārthasiddhir iti tad vyutpādyate iti / atrādrāv iti nirdiśyamānam adrimātrapratīter na prakṛtam adriṃ gamayet / tasmād ubhayam atropādeyaṃ yathā atha śabdnānuśāsanam / keṣāṃ śabdānām iti / giriśabdena girau prakrānta adriśabdena paryāyāntareṇa tv āgatam āsamañjasyaṃ duṣpariharam eveti / udanvacchinnā bhūr ity atra tu udanvataḥ parāmṛśyasya naikaṭhyād yogyatvāc ca bhuvaḥ strītvena sa iti parāmarśānarhatvāc ca sarvanāmaparāmarśa eva yukto, na punaḥ svaśabdagocaratvam ity atra duṣṭataiva / kiṃ ca samudāyasya kasya cit kena cid vākyena nirdeśe vākyāntare tadavayavasya nirdhāreṇa karttavye tasya samudāyasaya nirdhāraṇaviṣayapratītaye yacchabdena nirdeśe karttavye nirdhāryamāṇasyāvayavasya nirdeśo duṣṭa eva / yathā:

     tasmād ajāyata manur navarājabījaṃ yasyānvaye sa sagaraḥ sa bhagīrathaś ca /
     ekena yena jaladhiḥ parikhānito 'yam anyena siddhasaritā paripūritaś ca //

atra sa sagaraḥ sa bhagīrathaś ceti yan nirdiṣṭaṃ tasyaiketyādinā nirdhāraṇaṃ vihitam / nirdhāraṇaṃ ca jātiguṇakriyābhiḥ samudāyād ekadeśasya pṛthak karaṇam / na cātra samudāyaḥ kena cit padena nirdiṣṭaḥ / yaccaikeneti nirdiṣṭam, tan na samudāyaḥ, api tv ekadeśaḥ / tataś ca nirdeśyānirdeśād anirdeśyanirdeśyāc cātra duṣṭatvam / evaṃ ca samudāyasyaiva nirdhāraṇaviṣayasya yacchabdena nirdeśe karttavye eko yayor jalanidhīn nicakhāna sapta gāṅgaiḥ payobhir abhivarṣitavān dvitīyaḥ iti pāṭhaḥ śreyān /

kva cid yattacchabdāv agrahaṇena vidhyanuvādabhāvena vākyārthaprastāve yadantarānyathākaraṇaṃ tatra duṣṭatvaṃ yathā:

     yat tvannetrasamānakānti salile magnaṃ tad indīvaram

iti / atra prathamatṛtīyayoḥ pādayor yattacchabdaparigraheṇa vidhyanuvādabhāvenopanibandhaḥ / dvitīyapādagatatvena tadullaṅghanaṃ doṣaḥ / indīvarāṇāṃ rājahaṃsānāṃ ca bahutvāt sītāsaṃbandhivastūpamitayor indīvararājahaṃsayor vyāvṛttyarthaṃ vidhyanuvādabhāvaparigrahaḥ / candrasya tv ekatvāt tadakaraṇam iti ke cit / tad asat / candrasyāpi dvitīyācandrādibhedena bahutvasaṃbhavāt tatrāpi vidhyanuvādabhāvo yuktaḥ / indīvarāṇāṃ vyaktibhedena mukhyo bhedaḥ / candrasya punar ekavyaktirūpasya kālabhedād avasthābhedāc ca bhinnatvam amukhyam iti cen na / bhinnā eva candravyaktayaḥ / anyo hi dvitīyācandro 'nyaś ca pūrṇacandraḥ / ataś caiva dvitīyācandrādivyāvṛttyā pūrṇacandrapratītyarthaṃ mukhacchāyānukārīti viśeṣaṇaṃ dattam / na hi śaśiśabdaḥ pūrṇacandrābhidhāyī, tasya candramātravācakatvāt / saṅkhyāvyavahāreṣu candrasyaikatvapratītir iti cet / kva cij jātivyavahāreṣv apīndīvarādīnām ekatvaṃ siddham / tasmāt kavivyavahāre candragatatvenānekatvasya vyavahārāt tadāśrayeṇeha vidhyanuvādabhāvaḥ śreyān /

kiṃ cāsthānaviniveśanaṃ tacchabdasya pratītiviprakarṣāyaiva / yathā:

     masṛṇacaraṇapātaṃ gamyatāṃ bhūḥ sadarbhā viracaya sicayāntaṃ mūrdhni gharmaḥ kaṭhoraḥ

iti / atra viracaya sicayāntam ity atra tacchabdo hetvartho viniveśayitavyas tṛtīyapādādau niveśitaḥ / na ca tatra tasyopayogaḥ / kṛtas tatra pratītikuṇṭhatvam utpādayatīti / kva cit pradhānakriyāyās tadādisarvanāmnā parāmṛṣṭasya guṇakriyāyāṃ svaśabdenopādānaṃ duṣṭam eva / yathā pratyāsanne nabhasi iti / atra tasmai iti sarvanāmnā pūrvaprakrānto meghaḥ parāmṛśyata utaitacchlokagato jīmūtaḥ / tatrādye pakṣe jīmūtagrahaṇam anarthakaṃ pradhānakriyāyāṃ tadā parāmṛṣṭasya pūrvaprakrāntasyaiva meghasyārthataḥ saṃbandhayogyatvāt / na hi yāvatāṃ yena saṃbandhas tāvatāṃ pratyekaṃ nirdeśaḥ kriyate / ekatra kṛto 'nyatrākāṅkṣādinopajīvyate / tasmāj jīmūtagrahaṇaṃ na karttavyaṃ, kṛtaṃ pratyuta vastvantarapratītiṃ janayad vairasyam āvahati / atha tacchabdenaitacchokagato jīmūtaḥ pratyavamṛśyate / tad asat / sarvatrātra prakaraṇe pūrvaprakrāntasyaiva meghasya parāmarśaḥ sthita itīhāpi tathaiva parāmarśo nyāyya iti punar api jīmūtagrayaṇam anarthakam eva /

itthaṃ dvitīyaṃ vidheyāvimarśaṃ vivicya tṛtīyam apy atraiva śloke prapañcayitum upakramate - api cetyādinā / prāyeṇeti dvandvaṃ varjayitvā tatra yugapadadhukaraṇavacanatayā sāmarthyaṃ prakārāntareṇa samarthitam / tatrādya iti tatpuruṣaḥ samānādhikaraṇaḥ karmadhārayaḥ iti vacanāt / bahuvrīhiḥ samānādhikaraṇānām iti vacanāt prāyeṇa bahuvrīhiḥ samānādhikaraṇaviṣaya eva / susūkṣmajaṭakeśādau tu vyadhikaraṇānām apīṣyate / tatraiva samānādhikaraṇe padārthe / yadā saṅkhyāyā iti vyadhikaraṇa saṅkhyāpūrvo dviguḥ iti vacanāt / pratiṣedhasyeti nañ iti nañsūtrārambhāt / dvitīya iti vyadhikaraṇaḥ / kārakāṇām iti kartṛkaraṇe kṛtā bahulam ityādinā / saṃbandhasyeti ṣaṣṭhī ityādinā / tatrāpīti kārakasaṃbandhayoge adhistri upakumbham ityādau / svāśrayo viśeṣyam / vidheyadhurām iti śabdavṛtte yo vidheyaḥ tasya kakṣyāṃ vāstavīṃ vidheyatām ity arthaḥ / anūdyamānakalpatayeti / śābdaṃ prādhānyam anapekṣya vāstavena prādhānyenety arthaḥ / astam iyād iti ekārthībhāvād vibhaktatvenāpratīter ity arthaḥ / ekatreti vidheyānuvādyagarbhatve / anyatreti saṃbandhamātrapratipādane / vikalyeteti mahāvibhāṣayā vyavasthitavibhāṣātvād iti bhāvaḥ / ekasyaiveti / viśeṣaṇagatasya prādhānyasya anyasya tadgatasyaivāprādhānyasya / ekasya hīti, aparasya punar iti ca / atra phalabheda ity atra prakrāntaṃ phalaṃ saṃbandhanīyam / atra codayati virodhasyobhayavastuniṣṭhatvāsiddher atrābhāva uktaḥ / tad asat / tarhi na hi sahānavasthānalakṣaṇo vastugata eka eva virodhaḥ bhedo, yaḥ śītoṣṇādau labdhavṛttiḥ / kiṃ tarhi parasparaparihārasthitatālakṣaṇo vastvavastutvāśrayo dvitīyo 'py asti virodhaprakāraḥ / tadā hi yadi vastvāśrayo na saṃbhavati virodho vastvavastutvāśrayas tu kathaṃ na syād / ataś ca syāt pūrvapakṣavelāyāṃ bhāvābhāvayor evety uktam / naiṣa doṣaḥ / vastvavastvāśrayasya virodhasya tādātmyaniṣedhe vyāpārāt / yadi nāma prādhānyaṃ, tasyām eva kakṣyāyāṃ svayam aprādhānyaṃ na syād, aprādhānye vā prādhānyam / prādhānyavidheye punar apekṣāntareṇāprādhānyaṃ kathaṃ na syāt / na syād, yadi śītoṣṇavad dvayor vastutvaṃ syāt / na cātraitad asti vaivakṣikasyāvastutvāt / yathā rājapuruṣa ity atra rājño vaivakṣikam eva prādhānyaṃ vāstavaṃ punar aprādhānyam eva tadvad atrāpi draṣṭavyam / tad ayam atra piṇḍārthaḥ saṃsarganiṣedho 'tra kartavyaḥ / sa ca vastudvayaniṣṭha iti dvayor atrābhāvān naikenāparatra pratiṣedha iti /

anyeneti viśeṣyābhidhāyinety arthaḥ / anyonyam iti / parasparaviśeṣaṇānāṃ yady api viśeṣaṇaṃ viśeṣyeṇa iti viśeṣaṇasya viśeṣyeṇaiva samāsa uktaḥ, tathāpi kāṇakhañjādiṣu siddhaṃ viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyayor yatheṣṭatvād iti vacanenaikasya viśeṣyatvavivakṣām āśritya parasparaṃ viśeṣaṇānāṃ samāsaḥ samarthitaḥ / tadabhiprāyeṇānyonyam iti saṃbhāvanā / dārasukha iti dārāṇāṃ sukheti tatpuruṣaḥ kartavyaḥ / bahuvrīhau rājāhassakhibhyaḥ iti ṭac na syāt / he hasteti / mṛtasya śiśor dvijasya ity atra samāsaḥ śaṅkitaḥ / rāmasya pāṇir asi iti tu ṣaṣṭhīsamāsa udāharaṇam / atra kva cit kartṝṇām karmaṇāṃ ca prathamāntānāṃ kvāpi saṃbandhināṃ karmaṇāṃ ca ṣaṣṭhyantānāṃ kutrāpy āmantraṇānāṃ samāsaḥ śaṅkitaḥ / vakṣyamāṇanayeneti / vyāsaḥ pārāśaryaḥ ityādivicāreṣu / cāpācārya iti / atra hi tripuravijayitvādyanuvādena cāpācāryatvādividhiḥ / anūdyamānaś cārtho vidheyasyotkarṣam āvahan pratīyate / na caivam iti upendravajrasthāne indravajraprayogāt / upagatam asmābhir iti / duḥśravatvam api vṛttasya śabdānaucityam eva / tasyāpy anuprāsāder ivetyādivadadbhiḥ / atra yathā ca kāraṇaguṇe ityādigranthaḥ antaraślokaparyantaḥ pratyudāharaṇaṃ yathā taṃ kṛpāmṛdur ity ataḥ pūrvaṃ paṭhitaḥ sāmañjasyaṃ bhajate, pratyudāharaṇaṃ ceti udāharaṇagranthaḥ samañjasa eva syāt / dṛśyate ca pustakeṣv evaṃ pāṭhaḥ / tasmād atra jāgaraṇīyam / kāraṇam atra parāśāro jamadagniś ca / tadabhāve hetur iti tacchabdena samāsaḥ parāmṛṣṭaḥ / tataś cātra pārāśaryādipadaṃ vyāsādāv utkarṣam arpayat punar uktam / takṣakasarpa iti takṣakaśabdenaivātra sarpaviśeṣatvāt sarpatve pratīte sarpapadam utkarṣasamarpaṇapravaṇam eveti tadarthasya vidheyatvam / lohitas takṣaka iti yathā takṣakaśabdād eva sarpatvajātiḥ pratītā tadval lohitalakṣaṇo guṇo 'pi tata evāvyabhicārāt pratītaḥ / tatas tau jātiguṇau vidheyatābhiprāyeṇoktau na samāsa nyagbhāvanīyau / uktanyāyād iti vidheyatvān na samāsaḥ pravartata ity arthaḥ / pakṣo na cāsty anyas tadatyaye iti / iha dvau pakṣāv ullikhitau takṣakasya svarūpamātrapratipādanaṃ vā lohitākhyaguṇavidhir vā / ubhayatrāpi kṛtā carcā / tadatyaye ca kathitapakṣadvayātikrame cānyas tṛtīyapakṣo nāstīty arthaḥ /

evam iyatā karmadhārayaṃ vicārya bahuvrīhinirūpaṇāyāha bahuvrīhau yatheti / tatas tad iti sthalīkaraṇādi yad viśeṣaṇatayopāttaṃ tat parāmṛśyate / tair vidhyādibhiḥ / tadapratītiḥ utkarṣāpakarāpratītiḥ / pratītibhedahetau samāsāsamāsayoge / pratītisāmarthye karmadhārayādiviṣaye / tadasaṃbhavaḥ pratītibhedāsaṃbhavaḥ / antyāvasthā prāptakāraṇeṣu yuktaiva kāryotpattir ity arthaḥ / etadabhyupagame dṛṣṭavirodham āha / evaṃ hīti / naiva veti nyāyāviśeṣāt / ardhajaratīyam iti ardhaṃ jaratyā iti samāsāc ca tadviṣayā iti cchapratyayaḥ / yathā jaratyā varāṅgaṃ kāmayate mukhaṃ na kāmayate tadvad evety arthaḥ / tat tasya iti tad iti tasmāt / tau sūryacandramasau / tayor iti anuvādyayos sūryācandramasoḥ / pāramparyeṇeti vidheyatām āha pitāmahatvadvāreṇa / ata eva sūryācandramasāv iti dvandvanirdeśo dvayoḥ spardhitāṃ prakāśayati / urvaśyā ca bhuvā ceti samāsābhāvo varaṇasya mukhyāmukhyatvapradarśanārtham ekasya vāstavatvād aparasya kaviprauḍhoktiniṣpāditatvāt / iha ceti pratītivaicitryaṃ spaṣṭataram eva dhārayatu matimān iti pāścātya sanbandhanāyaṃ janaka iti / atra janakākhyarājarṣiprabhṛtayaḥ pitṛtvāder utkarṣam arpayanti /

evaṃ bahuvrīhiṃ vicārya dviguṃ vyācaṣṭe dvigau yatheti / niravaśeṣa iti saptatvasaṅkhyāyāṃ vidheyatvena saṃrambhāspadatvaṃ samāse tu nyagbhāvāt / daśasv iti daśatvasaṅkhyāyā vidheyatvaṃ rāvaṇasya paribhavātiśayaṃ prakāśayati ekasminn api mūrdhani padanyāsaḥ paribhavāspadaṃ kiṃ punar daśāsv iti / pratyudāharaṇaṃ saptāṅgyām iha yasya sa itītyādipāṭhe / vaiśasaṃ bādhaḥ / evaṃ dviguṃ vyākhyāya nañsamāsaṃ vyācaṣṭe nañsamāseti / upadarśitam iti asaṃrabdhavān ity atra vidheyāvimarśavicāre anuktavān iti noktavān iti vācyam / tatpuruṣe kartrādīnāṃ ṣaṇṇāṃ kārakāṇāṃ saṃbandhasya ca krameṇodāharaṇāny āha deśetyādinā / so 'yam iti / atra sa evāyam iti vyākhyā / ahitasaṃbandhināṃ śastrāṇāṃ ghasmarāṇi grasanaśīlāni ata eva gurūṇi / karaṇaṃ pratīti kriyāṃ pratīty arthaḥ / tat tasyeti prakrāntasya viśeṣyasya karaṇasya / tasyeti rāmasya / śauryaṃ balam / nighnaḥ paravaśaḥ / tena tad iti rāmeṇeti viśeṣaṇam /

anekeṣām iti / anekaśabdasya nañsamāse uttarapadārthaprādhānyād ekavacanaprasaṅgaḥ / satyam kiṃ tu nañprayogaviṣaye ekaśabdasyaikavyatiriktavastuviṣayatvaṃ yathā abrāhmaṇa ity atra brāhmaṇaśabdasya kṣatriyādigocaratvam / ekavyatiriktaṃ ca vastu kadā cid ekatvoparaktaṃ pratīyate, kadā cin nijenaiva svarūpeṇa / ādye pakṣe anekam iti bhavati dvitīye tv anekānīti / yathā ca padamañjariḥ patañjaliḥ - pravṛttibhede prayojakaṃ cittam ekam anekeṣām iti / gurudattam iti guruṇā dattam iti vācyam / tat tasyā iti sītāyā viśeṣaṇabhūtāyāḥ sītākartṛtkāyā gamanakriyāyā ity arthaḥ / gurvartham iti gurave idaṃ gurvartham iti kriyāviśeṣaṇam etat / kriyāviśeṣaṇānāṃ karmatvaṃ napuṃsakaliṅgatvaṃ ca / īpsitatamatve tu ṣaṣṭhī syāt / arthanakriyāmukheneti arthayata iti nigamanāt / tat tasyeti tad gurvartham iti viśeṣaṇam / tasyārthinaḥ / avamatatām anabhipretatām / avamatatvaṃ garhitatvam / sutanirviśeṣam iti / kriyāviśeṣaṇam eva / pradakṣiṇakriyety atra pradakṣiṇakriyāyā atyayakriyākarmabhūtāyā antarāyahetukopanimittatvāt prādhānyam / evaṃ prathamaprabodhita iti prāthamyasya / tathā yathākāmatvayathākālatvayor jñeyam / yadavalokaneti rūpasampat parāmṛṣṭā /

svahasteneti karaṇapadam / svahastalikhitānīti svahastaśabdo 'trādarapratītihetukatvena lekhanaṃ praty utkarṣanimittam api samāse guṇīkṛtaḥ / pūrvavad iti kṛtasamāsavaiśasam / tac ca vipradattam iti pāṭhe / pitāmahapitāmatayeti pitāmaho brahmā pitāmahaḥ pūrvapuruṣo yasya / tayor janmanidhanayoḥ / tadvato janmanidhanavataḥ / tābhyāṃ janmanidhanābhyām / kṭāntād adhikam āsamudrāt kṣitīśānām iti ca vācyam / apādānasamānanyāyatvād avadhir api pañcamyanto 'tra gṛhyata iti pratyudāharaṇopapattiḥ / upāgatemeti upāgatā iti nirdiṣṭā upāgamakriyā /

raṇabhūṣita iti / atra raṇabhuvīti vācyam / śocanīyatāgatiḥ kriyā / tatra samāgamaprārthanā hetutvenopāttā / tasyāḥ saṃbandhidvāreṇa saṃbandhitvamukhena kapālina iti viśeṣaṇam / atra saṃbandhiśabdo bhāvavṛttiḥ saṃbandhitve varttate, yathā dvyekayor dvivacanaikavacane iti, sudhīram uvāceti / tat tasyā iti / tad viśeṣaṇam / tasyās samāgamaprārthanāyāḥ / tatra śocanīyatāgatau / sāmarthyam avyabhicāreṇa sampādakatvam / tasya sakaleti tacchabdaḥ kapālina ity asya parāmarśakaḥ / viśeṣyeṇa samāgamaprārthanayety anena / pratyavaraṃ guṇabhūtam / evaṃ tātasyeti, āryasyeti, skandasyeti, taveti cety eṣāṃ viśeṇaṇānām utkarṣasamarpakatvaṃ jñeyam / tasyaiveti gauravadurāropatvanibandhanasya harasya / tacceti prādhānyam / tasyeti harasya / kalpitārthasyeti vistāritakṛtrimatvamātravācino 'dhijyatvamātralakṣaṇārthāropāt / aprayuktasyeti uktanayenāsminn arthe kavibhir aprayujyamānasya / guṇāntaralābha iti vakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇasya vācyāvacanasya parihārāt / mātreti evaṃ kṛtam ity atra karaṇam / niṣka ābharaṇaviśeṣaḥ / vibhaktyanvayeti śrūyamāṇāyā vibhakter ity arthaḥ / tathā ca ṣaṣṭhyā ākrośe iti jñāpakam rūpakam upadeśa iṣyata iti pramāṇāntareṇa loko vedas tathādhyātmaṃ pramāṇaṃ trividham ity uktarūpeṇa siddhau yau svasya viśeṣaṇasyotkarṣāpakarṣau tadādhāyinām arthād viśeṣyaṃ pratīty arthaḥ / ārthaṃ vāstavam / alukam āha ṣaṣṭhyā ākrośe ity anena / cintyam iti / etadavagamāya vicāryam ity arthaḥ / samāse ca vibhaktilopād iti / iha hi vibhaktiśravaṇāśravaṇe vā anvayavyatirekābhyāṃ viśeṣaṇagatayor vāstavayoḥ prayojakatāṃ bhajete / te tu prāyeṇa vākyasamāsagatatvenopalabhyamāne samāsasya vibhaktyaśravaṇād vidheyāvimarśatām utpādayataḥ / ata eva samāse 'pi yadi vibhaktiḥ śrūyate, tadā na vidheyāvimarśo yathā dāsyāḥ kāmuka ityādau / samāsas tu tatraikapadyādiprayojanatvena kṛtaḥ / tannibandhaneti utkarṣāpakarṣanibandhanā / evaṃ ca vibhaktyaśravaṇānvayavyatirekānuvidhāyitvaṃ vidheyāvimarśasya vyāptyā pradarśitaṃ bhavati /

evaṃ ca saptaprakāraṃ tatpuruṣaṃ nirūpyāvyayībhāvaṃ nirūpayati - avyayībhāva iti / samāpaṃ viśeṣyaṃ prati dayitasyeti yad viśeṣaṇaṃ tat tasya samīpasyeti yojanā / madhyevyometi pāre madhye ṣaṣṭhyā vā ity avyayībhāvaḥ / sa ceti prakarṣaḥ / evam iyatā dvandvavarjaṃ samāsavṛttir vicāritā / idānīm atideśamukhena kṛttaddhitavṛttir nirūpyate anenaivetyādinā / vivakṣāviśeṣād ity akārapraśleṣaḥ / sarvaṃ kaṣatīti sarvakūlābhrakarīreṣu kaṣaḥ iti khaco 'yaṃ viṣayaḥ / bibhartti yaḥ iti kukṣiṃbhariś ca iti nipātitasya kukṣimbhariśabdasyāyaṃ gocaraḥ / vidhun tud iti vidhvaruṣos tud iti khaśpratyayasthānam / śīrṣacchedam iti śīrṣacchedād yac ca iti taddhitasya yat pratyayasyedaṃ padam / tair iti kaṣaṇādibhiḥ / sarvārthasyeti, kāyopalakṣaṇasya kukṣer iti, vidhoś ceti vyakta sthitaḥ utkarṣam ādadhatāṃ prādhānyena vivakṣety atra sāmastyena yojanīyam / śīrṣacchedasya ceti utkarṣam ādadhataḥ prādhānyena vivakṣeti saṃbandhanīyam / pūrvebhyo 'sya pṛthaṅnirdeśas taddhitavṛttiviṣayatvena bhinnajātīyatvāt / atra ca sarvārthādīnāṃ caturṇām utkarṣādhāne samanantaranirdiṣṭa bhuvanābhayetyādicatuṣṭayaṃ krameṇa hetutvena draṣṭavyam / tad apīti caritam / kaṣaṇādikartṛṣv iti khalaudarikarāhuṣv ity arthaḥ / rāmo 'smi sarvaṃ saha iti / pūssarvayor dārisahoḥ iti khaco 'yaṃ viṣayaḥ / daśarathasya hi prasūtir asāv iti tasyāpatyam iti stracpratyaye taddhite kṛte dāśarathiśabdasyāyaṃ gocaraḥ / vākye tu yady apīti tad uktam - kriyāpradhānaṃ guṇavad ekārthaṃ vākyam iṣyate iti / anya iti vakṣyamānanyāyena śabdakṛtasāmarthyoktiḥ / sa iti pradhānabhāvenety atra nirdiṣṭaḥ pradhānabhāvaḥ śabdārthasāmarthyavivakṣākṛtānāṃ trayāṇām apīti śabdakṛtaṃ śabdasaṃskāramahimnā niṣpannaṃ yathā karmadhārayād uttarapadasya / arthasāmarthyakṛtaṃ vastuvṛttaniṣpāditaṃ yathā grahaṃ saṃmārṣṭītyādau grahādeḥ / tasya saṃskāryatvena vastutaḥ prādhānyam / vivakṣākṛtaṃ prayoktṛyadṛcchāpratipāditaṃ yad anyasyotkarṣāpakarṣādhānatayā vivakṣitaṃ yathā rāmasya pāṇir asi ityādau rāmādeḥ / tatra triṣu prādhānyeṣu vivakṣākṛtam eva grādhānyaṃ pradhānam / tatkṛtatvāt kāvyārthacamatkārasya / ata evoktaṃ tayoḥ samaśīrṣikābhāvād iti / tayor iti śabdārthasāmarthyakṛtayoḥ vivakṣākṛtena sahety arthāt / nanu pūrvaṃ śābdasyaiva prādhānyasya vaivakṣikatvam uktam anyasya tu vāstavatvam / tat katham iha śābdavaivakṣikayor anyatvam ucyate / anyatve vā prādhānyatrayapratipādane 'rthasāmarthyakṛtavivakṣākṭayoḥ ko viśeṣaḥ / śabdakṛtād dhi prādhānyād anyadarthasāmarathyakṛtam ucyate / tena vivakṣākṛtasya uktatvāt / tat kim arthasāmarthyakṛtam avaśiṣyata iti / naiṣa doṣaḥ / pūrvaṃ hi śābdikaikagocarasya śābdikavivakṣākṛtatvād vaivakṣikatvam / anyasya tu kavigocarasya vāstavatvaṃ tad evārthatvam / iha punaḥ sahṛdayaikagocarasya kavivivakṣāvaśād vaivakṣikatvam ucyate / śābdikaikaviṣayasya śābdatvam ity apekṣābhedāt pūrvas tāvan na virodhaḥ / yad api prādhānyatrayapratipādane 'rthasāmarthyavivakṣākṛtayor bheda uktas tatrāyaṃ bhāvaḥ - iha śābdaṃ vāstavaṃ ceti dvividham eva prādhānyam / vāstavatvasya ca vivakṣānapekṣatvena vastusāmarthyaprayojaka+++darthasāmarthyakṛtatvam uktam / saty api śabdakṛtād anyatva utkarṣāpakarṣapratipādanaprayuktakavivivakṣākṛtatve vāstavam eva vivakṣākṛta pratipāditam / tathā ca grahaṃ saṃmārṣṭīti vaidikaṃ vivakṣānapekṣam arthasāmarthyakṛtasyodāharaṇaṃ dattam iti viṣayavibhāgavyavasthiter na dvitīyo 'pi virodha iti samañjasaṃ sarvam / evaṃ kṛttaddhitavṛttiviṣaye ātideśikaṃ guṇapradhānabhāvaṃ vicārya samāsagatatvenaupadeśikaṃ prakṛtam anusandhatte tad idam atreti / sarūpāṇām iti dvandvasamāsasamānanyāyatvād ekaśeṣavṛttir api svīkṛtā / viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvābhāve 'pīti samāsoṭṭaṅkanikāyāṃ prāyagrahaṇaprayojanaṃ prakāśayati / rūpaṃ ca kāntiś ca vidagdhatā ceti, amṛtena viṣeṇeti cābhihitānābhihitakartṛvibhāgenodāharaṇadvayam / rūpam ityādau hi gamyamānabhavanakriyāpekṣaṃ rūpādīnāṃ kartṛtvam / etena tatpuruṣasya kartrudāharaṇaprastāve kartrādīnāṃ kārakāṇām anekeṣām iti yad uktaṃ, tat samīhitam. kaś ca kaś ceti / atraikaśeṣo na kṛtaḥ / kṛtaikaśeṣam iti kāv iti prayoge / adhunā pradhānetarabhāvāpattiṃ darśayati yatra punar iti / bhavata iti ripustrīṇāṃ saṃbandhitvena, ripustrīṇām iti stanayugasya saṃbandhitveneti yojanā / ripustrīṇām iti samāsasyodāharaṇam / na cātra saṃbandhamātrād atiriktaṃ pratīyate / tadartham eveti upamotprekṣādayo 'py alaṅkārāḥ upamotprekṣādīnām utkarṣam apakarṣaṃ vā pratipādayituṃ vidhīyante / anyathā tadviracanaṃ niṣprayojanaṃ syāt / tau vidheyeti / utkarṣāpakarṣau / samāsa iti sā samāsa iti vivakṣā parāmṛśyate / vaidarbhīti yady api vāmanamate asamāsā pāñcālī, madhyamasamāsā tu vaidarbhī, tathāpi matāntare viparyayaḥ sthita iti tadabhiprāyeṇehāsamāsā vaidarbhī kathitā / kārikāmadhya eva saṃbandhamātrapratītau samāsasyodāharaṇam / ūrdhvākṣitāpeti / atra caturthapādaikaśeṣadeśayuktasya pādatrayasya samāse saṃbandhamātraṃ pratīyate, notkarṣāpakarṣau / vākyāt tūbhayam iti ubhayaṃ saṃbandharūpam utkarṣāpakarṣarūpaṃ ca vastv ity arthaḥ / atrodāharaṇaṃ me yadaraya iti samāse hi madaraya iti syāt / na cāsmād atiśayaḥ pratītaḥ / nanu padād uttarapadayor yuṣmadasmadoḥ temayāv ekavacanasya iti temayāv ādeśāv uktau / na cātra padāt paro 'smacchabdaḥ / evaśabdaḥ padam iti cen na / tatprayoge nacavāhāhaivayukte iti niṣedhād bhinnavākyagatatvāc ca / samānavākye hi nighātayuṣmadasmadādeśāḥ / etenaiva vyatiriktaṃ padāntaraṃ pratyuktam / utkarṣamātram eva śabdādeśaḥ atra ke cid āhuḥ vākye tāvad rasapratītir nirvyūḍhā / tām anupamaradayan kāvye yady asādhuśabdo 'pi syān na tadā sthūlaḥ kaś cid doṣaḥ / kāvye hi rasapratītiḥ pradhānam / tadanirvāhe kāvyam eva na syāt / apaśabdaprayoge tu lakṣaṇāsmaraṇamātram / tad uktaṃ -

     nīrasas tu prabandho yaḥ so 'paśabdo mahān kaveḥ /
     sa tenākavir eva syād anyenāsmṛtalakṣaṇaḥ //

iti / anye tv āhuḥ / bhavatu rasāpekṣayāpaśabdasya svalpadoṣatvaṃ, tathāpi mahākavīnām apaśabdaprayogo mahān doṣaḥ / tenātra temeśabdau nipāteṣv iti tādṛśo vibhaktipratirūpako meśabdo nipāto, yathā ahantā ahaṃyur ityādāv ahaṃśabdaḥ / tataś ca nātra kaś cid viśeṣa iti / kiṃ sarvātmanā karaṇasya duṣṭatvam eva / nety āha kin tv iti / etasya samāsasya / antareṇeti vīraraudrādeḥ samāsena prakāśyatvāt / vṛttaṃ vasantatilakādi / vṛttayaḥ kaiśikyādyāḥ upanāgarikādyāś ca / kākuḥ kākvadhyāyalakṣito dhvanivikārarūpo vā / vācikābhinayo vāgvikārarūpo 'nubhāvaḥ / ardhāntāvadhir iti ślokāpekṣayā ardham antāvadhiḥ / nyūneti padyāpekṣayā nyūnaṃ rasābhivyaktihetutvam ity arthaḥ / yathā pūrvokta iti ūrdhvākṣitāpetyādau / samāso 'rdhāntāvadhiḥ kāryo nādhika ity anena vyāvartyasyādhikasya tad udāharaṇam / tasyeti padārthānāṃ parasparasaṃbandhaś cen na cchidyate tadā tasya samāsasya madhye vicchedo na kārya ity arthaḥ / avyabhicārād iti vidheyatvaṃ hi prādhānyāvinābhāvaḥ / sneham iti / atra pānādīnām prakāśanasya ca vidhyanuvādalopitvaikakartṛkāṇāṃ prādhānyabhāvo nāpasmṛtam atra ca yo 'yam iti yacchabdena dīpasya padārthasya parāmarśopakrame tattamasa iti tacchabdena vākyārthasya parāmarśo duṣṭa ity upapāditaṃ prāk / śaktiḥ sāmarthyam āyudhabhedaś ca / tārakāḥ jyotīṃṣi daityaviśeṣaś ca tārakaḥ / adho nistejastvena vāhanatvena ca / śikhīvahnir mayūraś ca / candrasya suvarṇasya saṃbandhī kāntāvabhāso lasan dedīpyamāno yasmin / candrakāṇāṃ mecakānām avabhāso lasanaṃ sphurad yasya / andhakāre tamasi andhakārer harasya / guhaḥ kumāraḥ / apara iveti atrāparaśabdasāmarthyād bhūpe dvitīyaguhatvapratītau vastutas tadasaṃbhave tatsaṃbhāvanāyām utprekṣā / aparaśabdābhāve tu svasvarūpasthitasyaiva vāstavasya guhasya pratītāv iyam upamā syāt / evam apara iva pākaśāsano, maurvīṃ dvitīyām ityādau ca mantavyam / aharpater iti / aharādīnāṃ patyādiṣu iti vacanād rephaḥ / atra dhāraṇādīnāṃ guṇabhāvaḥ / ādhārasya tu prādhānyam / karttā hi guṇakriyā niṣpādayan pradhānakriyām aidamparyeṇa niṣpādayati, na tu tāsv aidamparyam / yatra sarvāsv aidamparyaṃ tatra bhavaty eva sarvāsām ākhyātavācyatvam / yathā saudhād ityādi / itarad aprādhānyam / ādyā pradhānabhūtā / aparā aprādhānyavatī / bahulagrahaṇam iti viśeṣaṇaṃ viśeṣyeṇa bahulam ity atra / kva cid ityādi / kva cit pravṛttiḥ kva cid apravṛttir iti bahulagrahaṇaprayojanasya vyavasthitatvāt / utargeti samāsavidhiḥ sāmānyarūpatvād utsargaḥ prādhānyādivivakṣānimittaś ca tatpratiṣedho viśeṣarūpatvād apavādaḥ / apavādasyaiveti / apavādaviṣayaparihāreṇotsargasya pravṛttir iti nyāyāt / kartum aśakya iti / avyavasthitaviṣayatvāt / yathā utsargasya ghañy amanuṣye bahulam ity atra / pariśabde tv ayaṃ bhavati / parivādaḥ parīvāda iti / vivāda ity atra naiva bhavati / tadviṣayaḥ syād iti kṛtyalyuṭo bahulam ityādigatasya bahulagrahaṇasya vidhyanuvādabhāvaviṣaye sāmarthyābhāvāt samāsābhāva iti bhāvaḥ / tadabhiprāyam iti ācāryābhiprāyam / sāpekṣatāmidīti / ṛddhasya rājñaḥ puruṣa ityādau / tat samarthagrahaṇam / etadvyāvṛttīti etacchabdena pradhānetarabhāvaḥ parāmṛṣṭaḥ / tasyehārthatvam apīti samarthagrahaṇaṃ pradhānetarabhāvaviṣayanivṛttyartham apīty arthaḥ / vidheyoddeśyeti uddeśyo 'trordhvanirdeśārhatvād anuvādyaḥ / yat teneti / yacchabdaḥ pūrvārthasaṃbaddhaḥ / tenāpāraṇena / anabhidhānaṃ veti abhidhānalakṣaṇā hi kṛttaddhitasmāsā iti / samarthagrahaṇaṃ ca veti / caśabdo 'trātiriktaḥ, samuccayavikalpayor virodhāt / evaṃ ca -

     dṛṣṭir nāmṛtavarṣiṇī smitamadhuprasyandi vaktraṃ na tan nārdrārdraṃ hṛdayaṃ na candanarasasparśāni cāṅgāni vā /


ity atra cavāśabdadvayaṃ pratyuktaṃ, cavāśabdārthayor ekatra virodhāt / khaṇḍiketi khaṇḍo granthasaṃbandhī na tu samasto granthaḥ / sa vidyate yeṣām / anavagatatadabhiprāyair iti samarthagrahaṇaṃ praty ācāryasya hi tair abhiprāyo nāgataḥ / abhidhānādhānoddhāreti / abhidhānānāṃ śabdānām ādhānam abhinavānāṃ nyasanam / uddhāraḥ pūrvakāṇām uddharaṇam / śālīnā adhṛṣṭā avicārakā ity arthaḥ / aparam apīti punaruktādikam / taccinteti / prādhānyetarabhāvena samāsāsamāsacintā / prakaraṇeti / yatrārthaprakaraṇādinā śabdasya vācyo 'rthaḥ prakarṣāpakarṣādikam arthāntaraṃ prakāśayati, tatrābhipretārthavināśabhayāt samāso na karttavyaḥ / yathā rāmasya pāṇir asi iti / prakaraṇaśabdādisakha iti pāṭhe śabdasyānyasya sannidhir iti svīkṛtam / yadā prakaraṇakākvādisakha iti pāṭhaḥ, tadā kākugrahaṇena svaraviśeṣa ucyate yaḥ kālo vyaktisvarādayaḥ iti kāvyagatatvena svīkṛtaḥ / evaṃ prasaktānuprasaktikayā samāsagatatvena tadatideśena samagrapravṛttigatatvenāpi guṇapradhānabhāvavivakṣāṃ mahatā prapañcena parighaṭayya prakṛtodāraṇe ṣaṣṭhītatpuruṣagatatvena yojayitum āha ittham avasthita iti / ambikāyā upādānam iti saṃbandhaḥ / tat kim iti / viśeṣaṇasyānyakesarivyāvṛttir vā, kesarigataprakarṣapratipādanaṃ vā phalam / ādye pakṣe nirdiṣṭacamatkārasambhāvanā / dvitīye tu samāsānupapattir iti tātparyam / vivakṣitapadaṃ camatkārātiśayapadena yojanīyam / tasyā ity ambikāyās sakāśāt / jātyantaraṃ viśiṣṭāvāntarakesarijātiḥ / tayāvacchinno viśiṣṭaḥ / viśiṣṭa eveti lokottaraḥ / mohantv iti harer vihaṅgamo garuḍaḥ / moham ajñānaṃ hantv ity arthaḥ / garuḍajātyavacchinna iti / saugatadṛśā garuḍānāṃ bahutvād iti bhāvaḥ / vihaṅgamaviśeṣatvaṃ tu jātyādivailakṣaṇyāt / svābhiprāyāviṣkaraṇam iti / sādṛśyamūlayāprastutapraśaṃsayeti bhāvaḥ / tasyāś ceti tacchabdena sarasvatī parāmṛṣṭā / sarasvatyā ambikā pratibimbam ātmanaś ca kesarīty arthaḥ / dvitīyapakṣa iti / kesarigataprakarṣapratipādanapakṣe /

samāsād asāv iti ambikākesariśabdād unmiṣaty eva sa camatkāra ity arthaḥ / udayāstamayeti / vṛttau camatkārasyāstamaya vākye udaya iti cūlikākrameṇa yogaḥ / upadarśitam eva prāg iti udāharaṇapratyudāharaṇapradarśanadvāreṇa / iṣṭaṃ hīti abhipretasyāprāptir yā, sā codanārhā iṣṭam etan na sidhyatīti / yat tu nābhipretaṃ tasyāprāptir bhūṣaṇaṃ, na tu dūṣaṇam ity arthaḥ / asmābhir asāv iti asau camatkāraḥ / sā bhrāntir eveti nirvikalpavikalpabhedena dvividhā bhrāntiḥ / tatrādyā timirādyupaplutendriyasya dvicandrādipratītirūpā / dvitīyā tv abhimānarūpā śuktirajatādipratītisvarūpā / seti camatkārāvagatiḥ / vyākhyāvākyād eveti ambikāyāḥ kesarīti samāsavivaraṇavākyāt / teṣām iti pratītivaicitryānabhyupagamavādinām / tatrāropiteti tatra samāse śuktisthānīye rajatam ivāropitāvāstavīty arthaḥ / udayāstamayapakṣau kramād vākyasamāsagatau / udyoga iti / saṃrambhapadaṃ nirasyodyogapadakaraṇaṃ prakramyamānodyuktavat padakramābhedāya / yo 'sāv ity adaḥśabdaḥ prasiddhiparāmarśakaḥ yacchabdapratinirdeśasya tacchabdena kariṣyamāṇatvāt / pratipāditeti / ārtho hi kevalatacchabdasya prayoganibandhana upakramopasaṃhārakramaḥ pratipādita eva / rajaś chaleneti / chalevaśabdaprayoge sāpahnaveyam utprekṣā / kevalacchalaśabdaprayoge 'py apahnutiḥ / kevalevaśabdaprayoge ca sambhāvanapratītāv utprekṣā / dvayaprayoge tu śabalā pratītiḥ / na cātrāpahnutyutprekṣayoḥ saṅkaraḥ / utprekṣā hy apahnutyavinābhāvinī / so 'pahnavaḥ kva cid garbhīkṛto yathā nakhakṣatānīva vanasthalīnām ity atra, na palāśāni, kin tu sambhāvayāmi nakhakṣatānīti pratīteḥ / kva cit tu śabdena pratipādyate yathā adhyāruroheveti / evaṃ cāsyā apahnutyavinābhāvinyā apahnutibādhakatvaṃ, na tayā saha saṅkaraḥ / bhinnavākyatāyām eveti / tatra hi vidhyanuvādabhāva āñjasyena krameṇa pratīyate / tad eva veti viśeṣaṇam / tac ca vidhyanuvādabhāvavivakṣāyāṃ vidheyam / anyatreti / utkarṣāparṣayor vidheyatvasya cābhāve / kāmacāra iti samāsāsamāsayoḥ / tadartham iti utkarṣādiviṣaye samāsaniṣedhārtham / sāpekṣeti sāpekṣam asamarthaṃ bhavatīty etāvanmātrapratītaye / pitroḥ svateveti yathā pitarau vandanīyāv iti nityasaṃbandhanyāyād nijāv eva pitarau pratīyete, tadvat sāpekṣāṇām anabhidhānākhyena nyāyena samāsābhāvaḥ pratyeṣyate / svatā ātmīyatvam iva / sā doṣaprakāranivṛttiḥ /

adhunā svotkarṣaśālitāprakaṭanārthaṃ svapariśramaṃ piṇḍīkṛtya ślokena darśayitum āha kāvyakāñcaneti / kāvyam eva parīkṣaṇīyatvāt suvarṇaṃ tatra parīkṣāsthānaṃ nikaṣopalam ātmānaṃ manyate, na punar uktakrameṇa parāmarthas san nikaṣopalaḥ / ata eva kuntakeneti khyātasyāpy ulluṇṭhanavacanam / śloka eṣa iti / yaḥ sarvasāratayā pradarśitas tatreyatī dūṣaṇavṛṣṭir muktā / tatrānyasya granthasya kā gaṇeneti sūcitam / nidarśitaḥ sthālīpulākanyāyenodāhṛtaḥ / atra śloke vakṣyamāṇaitadīyanyāyānusāreṇa kaṣeṇa niyamena kāñcanākṣepāt kāñcanapadaṃ paunaruktyadoṣaduṣṭam / nijakāvyalakṣmaṇīty atra nijārthasya saṃrambhāspadatvena vidheyatvāt samāsakaraṇaṃ vidheyāvimarśadūṣitaṃ ke cid ācakṣate vicakṣaṇāḥ / tattvenaiva granthakṛtā svakṛtiṣv ayantrita ityādinā dattottaram eva / asya ca vidheyāvimarśasyānantetaraprasiddhalakṣyapātitvenāsmābhir nāṭakamīmāṃsāyāṃ sāhityamīmāṃsāyāṃ ca teṣu teṣu sthāneṣu prapañcaḥ pradarśita iti granthavistarabhayād ita evoparamyate /

evaṃ vidheyāvimarśaṃ prakāravaicitryeṇa lakṣayitvā prakramabhedaṃ lakṣayitum āha - prakramabhedo 'pīti / pratipattṛpratīter iti rathasthānīyā pratipattṛpratītiḥ / utkhāto viṣamonnataḥ pradeśaḥ / enam iti śabdārthavyavahāram / tadviṣayabhāvaḥ prakramabhedaviṣayatvam / anabhibhāṣaṇaṃ tatkartṛkabhāṣaṇābhāvaḥ / evam anālapanaṃ jñeyam / analam asamarthā / vidhyanuvādabhāvaprakāratopagamād iti prakāraḥ sādṛśyam / upakrāntaṃ hy anuvādasthānīyam / nirvāhakaṃ ca vidheyaprakhyam / tatra spaṣṭaṃ vidheyānuvādyaprakāram udāharati yatheti /

     tadā jāyante guṇā yadā tais sahṛdayair gṛhyante /
     ravikiraṇānugṛhītāni bhavanti kamalāni kamalāni //

     evam eva janas tasyā dadāti kapolopamāyāṃ śaśibimbam /
     paramārthavicāre punaś candraś candra iva varākaḥ //

utkarṣāpakarṣamātreti kamalānām utkarṣavivakṣā / candrasya punar apakarṣavivakṣā / ata evodāharaṇadvayaṃ dattam / prakramabhedaprakāra iti prakāro 'tra viśeṣaḥ / paryāyaprakrameti / candraśabdārthasya śaśiśabdena paryāyāntaranirdeśo na yukto vakṣyamāṇaprakramabhedaprasaṅgāt / na caivam iti tenaiva śabdenopasaṃhāra ity arthaḥ / tayor iti prakramabhedapunaruktayoḥ / asyeti prakramābhedasya parāmarśaḥ / tatra hi yathoddeśaṃ pratinirdeśe na paunaruktyam, aikarasyena pratītiprasaraṇāt / uddeśyapratinirdeśyabhāvo na paunaruktyasya viṣayaḥ / yathā -

     kṣāmāṅgyaḥ kṣatakomalāṅguligaladraktaiḥ sadarbhāḥ sthalīḥ pādaiḥ pātitayāvakair iva galadbāṣpāmbudhautānanāḥ /

iti / atra galacchabdadvayaṃ nirdiṣṭaṃ yathoddeśaṃ pratinirdeśo 'sya viṣaya iti samañjasam / [tayor iti prakramābhedapaunaruktyayoḥ / asyeti prakramābhedasya parāmarśaḥ /] nanu vrajataḥ kva tāta! vajasīty atra vrajinā prakrame vajinā ca nirvāhe kathaṃ na prakramabhedaḥ / vajatir api dhātur asti / vaja vraja gatāv iti pāṭhād ity āśaṅkyoktaṃ vrajata iti / uditaṃ śiśuneti uditam ity asya viśeṣaṇaṃ paricayagatārtham iti / asphuṭam iti ca / bhāve cātra pratyayaḥ / kāryārthaṃ pathi gacchataḥ paścān nāmodīraṇaṃ viruddham iti śiśunā lalitavacasā nāmany udīrite jananyāsya bhartsanaṃ kṛtam iti tato 'sya manyur vivṛddha ity atra tātparyārthaḥ / evaṃ dhāturūpāyāḥ prkṛte prakramabhedaṃ pradarśya saṃprati prātipadikarūpāyās tasyā madhye ca sarvanāmādīnāṃ prakāravaicitryeṇa taṃ darśayati sarvanāmeti / kva cit punaḥ pustakeṣu prakṛtiprakramabhedād anantaraṃ pratyayaprakramabhedodāharaṇaṃ tat paścāt sarvanāmaprakramabhedanirdeśo dṛśyate / tatra ca prkṛter anantaraṃ pratyayasyaiva nirdeśa ucita iti sa eva kathita iti saṅgatiḥ / tataḥ paraṃ prakṛtiviśeṣāṇāṃ pratyayaviśeṣāṇāṃ tatsamudāyānāṃ ca tatprakramabhedo nirūpayiṣyate / uktarītyeti / yas tv ekavākye kartṛtvenokto yaś cedamādibhir ity atroktena krameṇety arthaḥ / nanu yacchabdena prakrame tacchabdenedamādibhir vā prakrame yacchabdena vā katham upasaṃhāra ity āha na caivam iti / anyonyāpekṣe iti / yattador nityābhisaṃbandha ity uktam / evaṃ tacchabdādūraviprakṛṣṭārtheṣv idamādiṣu prāg ukte yo 'vikalpam ityādau jñeyam / teneti prakṛtopasaṃhāraḥ / idamādīnāṃ parasparāvāntaravaicitrye 'pi sthūladṛṣṭyā ekārthatvam / atra hīti atra hi kartṛviśeṣaṇadvāreṇaikasya hetutvam aparasya sākṣād iti prakramabhedaḥ / yaśodhigantum iti atra hi tṛtīyātumunoḥ pratītivaiṣamyajanakatvam / vāśabdasyeti / vakṣyati hi tulyakakṣyatayā yatra padārthāḥ iti / apatyavato 'pīti yuktaḥ pāṭha iti / atra ke cit samarthayante - viśeṣataḥ snihyanto dṛśyante tat putraśabdasyāpatyaviśeṣavācitve apatyaśabdasya ca sāmānyavācitve 'pi sarvanāmavaśād viśeṣaparyavasāne bhavaty eva prakṛtārthaparipoṣa iti / tad etad asya granthakārasya hṛdayam anālokyaiva, yasmād dṛṣṭāntadārṣṭāntikabhāvenātra vākyārthadvayam upanibaddham / tatra ca dvayor bimbapratibimbabhāvena nirdeśo yujyate / dṛṣṭānte cātra sāmānyopakramaḥ, viśeṣopasaṃhāraḥ, puṣpaśabdasya sāmānyavācitvāc cūtaśabdasya viśeṣābhidhāyakatvād / viśeṣasya cotkṛṣṭatayaivātṛptiviṣayatvam / dārṣṭāntike aniṣṭam viśeṣopakramaḥ / sāmānyopasaṃhāraḥ / sarvanāmavaśād vā viśeṣāntaranirdeśo nyāyyaḥ / sthitapāṭhe putraśabdasya viśeṣavācitvam apatyaśabdasya sāmānyavācino viśeṣaparyavasānam / yadā tv apatyavato 'pīti pāṭhas tadāsya sāmānyopakramo viśeṣopasaṃhāraḥ / dvitīyasyāpatyaśabdasya sarvanāmasaṃbandhena viśeṣaparyavasānād yathaikīyamate tasminn adrau kati cid balety atra / api śabdasyārthasaṅgatiś ced dṛśyeva bhrājate / yasya naivāpatyasaṃbandhas tasya mā bhūt kanyāyām ekasyām atṛptiḥ yasya tv anekāpatyayogas tasya katham ekasminn apatye snigdhatvam iti vismayaḥ / etadartha evāpiśabdo jīvati / atṛptikāraṇatvaṃ ca kanyāyāḥ parasamarpaṇīyatvena / guṇagauraveṇa ca snehapātratā / etadartham asyāś cūtena pratibimbanam / tad ittham apatyavato 'pīty eṣa eva pāṭhaḥ śreyān / samāsānupapattīti adhikaṃ na tu taddhānir iti nyāyena guṇāntaralābha ity arthaḥ / varaṃ kṛteti / kṛtāḥ śikṣitāḥ santo dhvastā naṣṭā guṇā yasya / amaṇir avidyamānamaṇir alaṅkāraḥ / upalaśabdenātra maṇir eva vivakṣitaḥ / tannātra maṇiśabdaḥ prayukta iti paryāyaprakramabhedatvam / kham iveti / haṃsaś candra iva candra iva haṃsa iti yuktaḥ pāṭhaḥ / maghona indrasya sute 'rjune / vīryaṃ ca vidvatsv iti / vīryavedanaṃ cety eva hetutvena vivakṣitam / samuccayo vikalpo veti / vikalpo yaśo 'dhigantum ity atrodāhṛtaḥ / samuccayasya tv idaṃ vīryaṃ cety udāharaṇam / vidvatsu vīryaṃ tanaye iti pāṭhe na vedanaṃ hetutvena vivakṣitam, api tu vastusvarūpapratipādanaparatvenety ayaṃ manyate / evaṃ ca vidvatsv iti viśeṣaṇasya nairarthakyam āpadyata iti nānena vicāritam / duṣkūlabhāva iti / sāmānādhikaraṇyenopakrame vaiyadhikaraṇyena pratinirdeśaḥ prakramabhedāvahaḥ atra caturthe pāde / kapālam evāmalaśekharaśrīr ity atra kapālānāṃ bahutve vācye yad ekatvavacanam amalaśekharaśrīr ity atra ca śekharamātre dharmiṇi vaktavye yacchekharaśrīr iti dharmavacanaṃ tad anupapannam eva gantavyam / evaṃ ca pūrvokteṣu vakṣyamāṇeṣu codāharaṇeṣu saṃbhavann api vicāro granthavistarabhayān na niravaśeṣatayā kṛta iti tatraivābhiyogaḥ kartavyaḥ / tadupetam iti / svaśabdena sarvanāmnā vā nirdeśas tulyaphala iti pratipādayiṣyamāṇatvāt / bhagavati yuṣmatprasādeneti / anena nyāyena paśyata mātaḥ iti vārttike dharmakīrteḥ prayogaḥ pratyuktaḥ / prādhānyābhāvād ity uktam iti / yatraikakartṛkānekā prādhānyetarabhāk kriyā ity atra / anenijur akṣālayan / jakṣur akhādan / bisaprasūnaṃ padmam / nejanādāv iti liṭā bhūtānadyatanaparokṣaprakrame anenijur iti tu bhūtānadyatanena nirvāhaḥ / tathā dhṛtavikāsīty atra bhūtamātre ktapratyaya ity atrāpi kālaprakramabhedaḥ / tatropari tiṅantaprakramabhedo dvitīyo 'tra na sthitaḥ / evaṃ cehādigrahaṇena dhṛtavikāsīti gṛhyate / anenijur iti atra vikacam asya dadhuḥ prasūnam iti samādhānaṃ na kṛtaṃ prakārāntareṇa samarthayiṣyamāṇatvāt / yadi vetyādināmuṃ prakramabhedaṃ nirākaroti / ajayad iti atra parokṣo 'pi jayo darśanārhatvāt parokṣatvena na vivakṣita iti liṭprayogo na kṛtaḥ / vidyamānasyāsyāvivakṣāyāṃ dṛṣṭāntam āha anudarā kanyeti / na hi kasyāś cit kanyāyā udarābhāvaḥ kṛśatvāt punas tad api vivakṣyate / evaṃ ca -

     abhūdabhūmiḥ pratipakṣajanmanāṃ bhiyāṃ tanūjas tapanadyutir diteḥ /
     yam indraśabdārthaniṣūdanaṃ harer hariṇyapūrvaṃ kaśipuṃ pracakṣate // ityādeḥ,

     tāta tvaṃ nijatejasaiva gamitaḥ svargaṃ yadi svasti te kiṃ tv anyena hṛtā vadhūr iti kathāṃ mā sakhyur agre kṛthāḥ /
     rāmo 'haṃ yadi rāghavas tad akhilaṃ vrīḷānamatkandharaṃ sārdhaṃ bandhujanena sendravijayī vaktā svayaṃ rāvaṇaḥ //

ityādeś ca mahataḥ kāvyapravāhasya na kiṃ cid duṣṭatvam / arthasyeti tadbhāvo 'rthatvaṃ sattā atadbhāva asattvam / yatreti pūrvārdhaśeṣaḥ / yatheti / na prakramabheda ity anvayaḥ / tatra kālaviśeṣo darśitaḥ / yathā bhūtasya bhāvinaś ca kālasyādyatanānadyatanatve parokṣāparokṣatve ca vaivakṣike eveti / te śīlādayo 'rthāḥ ā kves tacchīlataddharmatatsādhukāriṣu ity atra nirdiṣṭāḥ / teṣāṃ ca vaivkṣike sattvāsattve / evaṃ ca kva cit tācchīlikādipratyayaprayoge 'py anyatra tadakaraṇam aduṣṭam / yathā -

     jugopātmānam atrasto bheje dharmam anāturaḥ /
     agṛdhnur ādade so 'rtham asaktaḥ sukham anvabhūt //

ity atrāgṛdhnur iti tācchīlyādyarthapratyayaprayoge 'py atrasta ity atrātrasnur ity akaraṇe 'pi na duṣṭatvam atrasnur iti vā nirdeśe agṛdhnur iti nirdoṣam eva / kartuḥ phalavattā kartrabhiprāyatvam / tad api vaivakṣikam eva / evaṃ ca dṛṣṭā dṛṣṭim adho dadāti kurute nālāpam ābhāṣitā ity atra yadi kartrabhiprāyatvaṃ kriyāphalasya, tadā dadātīti parasmaipadānupapattiḥ / na cet tadā kuruta ity atra parasmaipadaprasaṅga iti prakramabhedaparyanuyogo niravakāśa eva / evam anyatra boddhavyam / tena te iti / te kālaviśeṣādayaḥ tena vivakṣāprayuktatvena kāraṇena na darśitā ity arthaḥ / gāhantām iti / atra kartur ākhyātenābhidhānaṃ karmaṇaś cānabhidhānaṃ prakrāntaṃ visrabdhair ity anyathākṛtam iti kārakaprakramabhedaḥ / vihṛtiṃ viharaṇaṃ bhaṅgibhājanatvam ity arthaḥ / vivṛtam iti pāṭhe vistaraśālitvam ity arthaḥ / ratau vigraho virodhaḥ stanatair vyavahitas tatprasādād virodhasya kartum aśakyatvāt / vitene iti bhāve pratyayaḥ / stanitāni vitatībhūtānīty arthaḥ / śābdaḥ prakramabheda iti śabdaviṣayatvāc chābdaḥ / śābdaprakramabheda iti tu prakṛtiprakramabhedasyānukrameṇa ye paṭhanti taiḥ śābdaś cārthaś cottaro grantho nālocita ity upekṣyam etat / saṅgamabhūṣeti / atra buhuvrīhāv anyapadārthopasarjanenārthena krameṇopasaṃhṛtam iti / bhidyamānaśabdaviṣayatvāc chābdaḥ prakramabhedaḥ / evam ārthaḥ prakramabheda ity atra prathamaprakrāntabhidyamānārthaviṣayatvād ārtha iti vyākhyeyam / dhṛtavikāsīti pūrvaṃ kālaprakaraṇenodāhṛtam, saṃprati śābdaviṣayatvenodāhriyate, tiṅantagatatvenāpy ūhyate / na hīyam ārthaḥ prakramabheda iti atrodāharaṇadvitayaṃ dattaṃ mattateti samatayeti / tatra mattatety atra saṅgamabhūṣety ārthena krameṇa prakramaḥ, bhūṣayatīty atra tu śābdarūpatayā pratinirdeśa ity ārthaḥ prakramabhedaḥ / kiṃ tu tadvapus tad api cārutaratvam iti pāṭhaḥ sthitaparipāṭhyānuguṇyābhāvān na nyāyyaḥ / cārutā sa khalu sāpi śarīram iti tu pāṭhaḥ śreyān / evaṃ ca dayitasaṅgatir eṣety etacchabdaḥ paṭhanīyaḥ, na punar āsām iti pāṭhaḥ / tatra hi mattatā kena śabdena parāmṛśyate / samatayety etat prāyeṇādarśeṣu śābdaprakramabhede udāharaṇatayā dṛśyate / ārtha prakramabhedaprastāve vā? ca anantarodāharaṇayor ādyam āhitaviparyayam iti pāṭhaḥ / etac cāyuktaṃ yojanagranthe varuṇasyārthaprakrama iti granthavirodhāt / kiṃ tu niyamayann iti vidagdhamanyatayā datto 'pi no hṛdayaṅgamaḥ pāṭhaḥ, varuṇenaiva tat saṃbaddham ity atra pramāṇābhāvāt / na hi varuṇasyānyopasarjanatvena sthitasya svātantryam asti / tasya naivaṃvidhasaṃbandhaḥ puṣṭatvaṃ dhatte / ārthaprakramabhedaprastāve idam evodāharaṇam āhitaviparyayam iti pāṭhaḥ śreyān / parihṛtau bhavata iti / vibhaktiprakramabhedacaśabdayor dvitvād dvivacanam / caśabdasyobhayathā duṣṭatā ca / caśabdasya ca samuccayo viṣayaḥ / tadbhāvaḥ uktaḥ / yena tulyakakṣyatvābhāvākyatvena nivāritaḥ / prakramabhedas tv asatām ity asamuccetavyanikaṭaprayogāt / sa hi niyamanād ity asyānantaraṃ paṭhanīyaḥ / loṣṭasaṃcāra ekaikasya bhedasya bhedāntaraiḥ saha saṃyojanaprakārākhyo gaṇanāviśeṣaḥ / prakṛtipratyayayor iti laghuśabdaḥ prakṛtiḥ / tasyāṃ guruśabdena bhedaḥ / guruśabde ceyasunn adhikaḥ prayukto, yo laghuśabde na prayuktaḥ / tatpratyayasya ca pratinirdeśo na kṛta iti pratyayaprakramabhedo 'pi / abhinavapāṭhe tu tatpratyayarahitasyaiva laghuśabdasya pratinirdeśaḥ kṛtaḥ / krameti ya uddeśakramaḥ prakrāntaḥ, so 'nudeśe vaiparītyād na kṛta iti pratīter aikyasya vigamād duṣṭatvam / tava kusumaśaratvam iti / idaṃ kramaprakramabhedodāharaṇaṃ na yuktaṃ cūlikākramasyaivātrocitatvam / tathā hy uddeśaḥ / smaraṃ prati sāṃmukhyenābhidhānaṃ vihāya nenduṃ prāsaṅgikaṃ pratyayathārthajñānam ucitam iti smarasya tāvat prathamanirdeśo nyāyyaḥ / anudeśe tv idaṃ viṣayaṃ tyaktvā na prāsaṅgikena vākyārthaparisamāptiḥ śobhate iti pāryavasānikena smareṇaiva saṃmukhīkriyamāṇena vākyārthaḥ parisamapanīya iti pāṭhakramāpekṣayā cūlikākrama eva sahṛdayahṛdayarañjaka iti kuśāgrīyadhiṣaṇair nipuṇaṃ nirūpaṇīyam etat / tathā ca yuṣmadasmadoḥ padasya padāt ṣaṣṭhīcaturthīdvitīyāsthayor vānnāvau iti cūlikākrameṇa vyavahāro dṛśyate / kramaprakramabhedasya punar udāharaṇaṃ vastuprakramabhedavicāraprastāve nirūpayiṣyate / pradhānabhūtasyety arthapratipādanāya śabdaprayogāc chabdasyopāyamātratvād upāyānāṃ ca niyamābhāvāt / tad uktaṃ -

     upādāyāpi ye heyās tān upāyān pracakṣate /
     upāyānāṃ ca niyamo nāvaśyam avakalpate //

iti / prakramabheda iti / prakramabhedaviṣayasya vidhyanuvādabhāvaprakāratvāt prakramabhedo 'py upacārād vidhyanuvādaprakāra ity arthaḥ / anenaiva nyāyena śābdaś cārthaś ceti prakramabhedasya bhedadvayaṃ śābdārthaviṣayatvād boddhavyam / śabdabhedam iti / ekaśabdābhedatvābhidheyatvenārthasya pratyabhijñāyamānatvopapattaye / śabdabhede tasyaivārthasyānyasyeva pratīteḥ nāñjasena prakāreṇa vidhyanuvādabhāvaviṣayatvam / kāvyagatatvena hi cintā prastutā / na ca kāvye śāstrādivad arthapratītyarthaṃ śabdamātraṃ prayujyate, sahitayoḥ śabdārthayos tatra prayogāt / sāhityaṃ tulyakakṣyatvenānyūnānatiriktatvam / astv evam iti sāmānyena prakramabhedābhyupagamo viśeṣe tu paryanuyoga iti bhāvaḥ / prakramabhedaniyamaṃ pratīti hṛdayaṅgamaḥ pāṭhaḥ / yadbhedābhedābhyām iti hi yacchabdena prakramaḥ parāmṛśyate / prakramabhedaniyamaṃ pratīti tu pāṭhe yadbhedābhedābhyām iti prakramasyaivoddhṛtasya yathākathaṃ cit parāmarśo vyākhyeyaḥ / śuci bhūṣayatīti / atra bhūṣayatīti śābdaṃ bhūṣaṇaṃ prakrāntam alaṅkriyetyādāv ārthena rūpeṇa pratinirdiṣṭam / atra ca paryāyaprakramabhedaḥ sthito 'pi sāṃprataṃ na cintitaḥ śabdārthaprakramabhedacintanaprastāvāt / atra vibhāgasyaiveti / atra vety arthād upameyam tadabhisaṃbandhaḥ śabdābhisaṃbandhaḥ / viparyayād iti sākṣāc chabdasaṃbandhābhāvāt / udāharaṇadvaye śuci bhūṣayati iti cārutā vapur iti ca / yādṛśam iti sthitapāṭhābhiprāyeṇānaucityaṃ dattapāṭhāśayena tv aucityam ity arthaḥ / tacchabdenānye parāmṛśyante / sādṛśyam eveti / tadā yacchabdasya napuṃsakatā syāt / tasmāt surārivety atra parāmṛśyata iti avivekākṣamaprajñatvāt / tadapahṛteti bhaṅgibhaṇitivaicitryaṃ parāmṛṣṭam / utkaṭena bhaṇitivaicitryeṇa varṇanīyam ācchāditam ity arthaḥ / tad uktaṃ vakroktikṛtā laukikālaṅkārān upamānīkṛtya


     yadvat tadvad alaṅkārair bhāsamānair nijātmanā /
     svaśobhātiśayāntastham alaṅkāryaṃ prakāśyate //

iti / aprādhānyaṃ syād iti / ayaṃ bhāvaḥ - yadi śabdavyāpāraviṣayasya prādhānyam arthavyāpāraviṣayasya cāprādhānyam iti vyavasthā, tadā trividhasya pratīyamānasya parair dhvanyatvena vyapanirdidiṣṭasyāsmābhir anumeyatvenopapāditasyāprādhānyaṃ prasajyeta tasyārthavyāpāraviṣayatvāt, śabdavyāpāraviṣayatvasya dūṣitatvāt / iṣyate ca prādhānyam / tat katham iyaṃ prādhānyāprādhānyapratītir ghaṭata iti / cakrābhighātetyādau ca paryāyokte samāsoktivad gamyamānasyaiva prādhānyaṃ na vācyasyety upapāditaṃ prāk / ekābhighāta iti hayagrīvavadhe pāṭhaḥ sthitaḥ, sudarśanasya pulliṅgasya prakrāntatvād ya ity anena parāmarśāt / tat tv anavabudhya cakraṃ yadi parāmṛśyate, tadā yacchabdasya napuṃsakatā syāt / tan murārir evātra parāmṛśyata ity āśayena cakrābhighāteti paṭhanti / na tv ayaṃ tatra prastāvaḥ / tadapekṣayaiva prādhānyam aprādhānyaṃ ceti iha gamakam apradhānam upāyatvāt / gamyaṃ pradhānam upeyatvāt / tena pratīyamānasya gamyatvāt prādhānyavyavahāraḥ / na pratītyapekṣayeti / śabdenārthena ca yā pratītis, tadapekṣayā na prādhānyāprādhānyavyavahāra ity arthaḥ / tayas tv iha gamyagamakabhāvaviviktaviṣayatvena cintā kṛtā / tadapekṣayaiva ceti / vācyasyāpi yaḥ śābdatvena prādhānyavyavahārayogas tasyāpi / tadapekṣayā gamyagamakatvāpekṣayā / kva cid yatra pratīyamānasadbhāvas tatrāprādhānyam ity arthaḥ / vācyaṃ hi pratīyamānaṃ prati gamakatvena vyavasthitaṃ tena tadapekṣatvenāprādhānyam iti tātparyam / vicitrā bhaṅgibhiṇitaya iti yathā bhaṭṭabāṇasya teṣu teṣu sthāneṣu / abhibhūyamānatvād iti / yad uktaṃ dhvanikṛtā

     avyutpattikṛto doṣaḥ śaktyā saṃvriyate kaveḥ

iti / vākyabhedāc ceti vākyāntarāpekṣayā hi vākyāntarasya bhaṅgibhaṇitivaicitryam ity aṃśena pratītivaidūryān na prakramabhedadoṣaṃ prakāśayati / nyāyasiddhatvād iti / nyāyo 'tra bhaṇitivaiṣamyam / kāraṇabhedasyāpīti na kevalaṃ pratītibhedo bhedahetuḥ, yāvat kāraṇabhedo 'pi / pratītibhedo vijñaptyapekṣayā bhedahetuḥ, kāraṇabhedaḥ punar utpattyapekṣayeti viśeṣaḥ / tad uktam -

     ayam eva bhedo bhedahetur vā bhāvānāṃ yo 'yaṃ viruddhadharmādhyāsaḥ kāraṇabhedaś ca

iti / iha bhaṅgibhaṇitivaicitryāvaicitrye pratītipariskhalanāskhalanayoḥ kāraṇe / sa ceti prakramabhedaḥ / śābdaś cārthaś ceti pūrvaṃ prakṛtyādiprakramabhedavilakṣaṇau śābdārthaprakramabhedau lakṣitāv udāhṛtau ca / adhunā vācyapratīyamānārthāpekṣayā paryavasānābhiprāyeṇa sarvaprakramabhedavyāpakau sāmānyena śābdārthaprakramabhedāv uktāv iti viśeṣo boddhavyaḥ / vastuprakramabheda iti / vastu varṇanīyaṃ yathā varṇayituṃ prakrāntaṃ tasya tathā nirvāhābhāvād vastuprakramabhedaḥ / bhedeneti avayavasaṃbandhitvenety arthaḥ / prathame hi pāde avayavina eva svarūpeṇa varṇanaṃ prakrāntam ity avayavisaṃbandhitvena nirvāhaṇaṃ doṣaḥ / ubhayatrāpīti avayavivarṇane avayavavarṇane ca / tat svarūpaṃ nāyikāsvarūpam / aṅgena ity āmantraṇam / patatu adhastāt gacchatu / sādṛśyapratipādaneti dvicandram iti hi pāṭhe vadanena saha candro nabhaso dvicandratām āpādayati / tac ca vadanacandrayoḥ sādṛśyamūlam iti vyatirekaprakrame sādṛśyanirvāhāt prakramabhedaḥ / vastusargapaunaruktyasyeti punaruktavastuvirasa ity atra hi punaruktavastubhir virasa iti vyākhyāne sādṛśyena nirvāhaḥ kṛtaḥ / vyatirekeṇa ca prakrama iti doṣa evāyam vimukha iti / ke cit punaruktavastuṣu virasaḥ punaruktāni vastūni na karotīti vyākhyānena vyatirekanirvāhād yathāsthitapāṭhaṃ samarthayāṃ cakre / arthadoṣāṇām iti prakramātikramarūpāṇām ity arthaḥ / tapena varṣā iti

     tapena varṣāḥ śaradā himāgamo, vasantalakṣmyā śiśiraḥ sametya ca /
     prasūnakṛtyaṃ dadataḥ sadartavaḥ pure 'sya vāstavyakuḍumbitāṃ dadhuḥ //

atra hi strīpuruṣayugalatrayarūpatayā ṛtūnāṃ varṇane prastute strīrūpāṇām ṛtunāṃ tṛtīyāsaṃbandhād aprādhānye vivakṣite yat tapena varṣā ity atra viparyayaḥ kṛtaḥ, kṛte vā tathā nirdeśe śaradā himāgama ityādau yad anyathākaraṇaṃ, sa prakramabheda eva / yadi paraṃ strīpuṃsayor atra yena krameṇa prakramaḥ tasyānyathā nirvāhāt kramaprakramabhedam imaṃ vidmaḥ / tena pūrvaṃ kramaprakramabhedasyedam evodāharaṇaṃ deyam / tena varaṃ ghanaśriyoṣṇaḥ śaradā himāgamaḥ iti pāṭhaḥ kartavyaḥ / kartṛprakramabhedo 'pīti / yatra yuṣmadasmadarthagataṃ kartṛtvaṃ śeṣe 'tra cetane 'cetane vā vaktrā buddhipūrvakam evāropyate, tatra kartur anyasyāropaś cārutvāya vyatyāso guṇa evety arthaḥ / tayor iti / yatra kartṛvyatyāsaprakramabhedayoḥ / na prakaraṇāvasita iti / yuṣmadasmadarthasya hi kva cit kartṛtvaṃ prakaraṇādyavasitaṃ na śabdenābhidhātuṃ prakrāntam iti nāyaṃ prakramabhedadoṣasya viṣayaḥ / anyatrāropyaivam uktam iti śeṣatvena vivakṣite rāmabhadre / evam uttaratra bhārgave vaṭau cānyatvaṃ yojanīyam / nanu yuṣmadasmadarthasya cetanatvāt tadapekṣayācetanasyaivānyatvam ucitam iti kathaṃ cetanasyaivānyatvam ity āha - dvividho hīti / ayaṃ bhāvaḥ / na yuṣmadasmadarthagatacetanatvāpekṣayā vastvantarasyānyatvam, api tu yuṣmadasmadarthatvāpekṣayaiva / yuṣmadasmadarthau ca kramāt saṃbodhyamānavastuniṣṭhaḥ parabhāvo 'smitākhyā pratyaktā ca / tataś ca tadapekṣayā śeṣasyānyatvam / tasya ca cetanatvācetanatvād dvaividhyam iti na virodhaḥ kaś cit / paraśunā candrahāsa iti krameṇa dvayor api yuṣmadasmadarthayor acetanaviṣayakartṛtāvyatyāsa udāharaṇam / bho laṅkeśvara iti / atra rāmaḥ svayaṃ yācata iti asmadarthakartṛtvasya cetanaviṣayavyatyāsasyānyat sthitam apy udāharaṇīyaṃ na cintitaṃ, pūrvam udāharaṇāntare cintitatvāt, cintāntaraprastāvāc ca /

tad evam iyatā prabandhena prakramabhedaṃ vicārya kramaprāptaṃ kramabhedaṃ vicārayitum āha kramebhedo yatheti / nanu yadi smṛtiparāmarśakasya tacchabdasyānubhūta evārtho viṣaya ity ucyate, ye 'tyantaparokṣā rāmādayas teṣāṃ kavinā kāvye tacchabdena kathaṃ parāmarśaḥ kriyate teṣām atīndriyatvād ity āha atra ca pratītimātram iti / ayam atrābhiprāyaḥ / yena vinā yan nopapadyate, tasya tadapekṣā nyāyyā / smṛtiś ca pratītimātram antareṇānupapadyamānā tadapekṣiṇī syāt, naindriyikapratītyapekṣiṇī aindriyakapratītiṃ vināpi śabdādibhyaḥ pratītau tasyāḥ saṃbhavadarśanāt / rāmādīnāṃ ca yadi naindriyikī pratītis tadā śabdāt prasiddher vā pratītir astu / tannibandhanaś ca smṛtiparāmarśakena tacchabdena parāmarśa iti na kaś cid virodhaḥ / nanv iti / ayam atrārthaḥ / padārthavimarśapurassaro vākyārthavimarśa iti na padārthavimarśavelāyāṃ bhavatv iyam āśaṅkā / vākyārthavimarśasamaye tv akhaṇḍapratītau pūrvāparabhāvaniyamāvabhāsanābhāvān nāsya doṣasyāvakāśaḥ / uddeśyatvāc ca vākyārthapratīter antaraṅgatvam iti tadāśrayeṇaiva vyavasthopapattau na kramadoṣacintā kā cid iti / pratirūpaḥ pratibimbarūpaḥ tatsaṃcāro vaktrabhiprāyasaṃkramaṇam / śabdavyavahārasyeti / śabdavyavahāramukhena śrotṛgṛhīto vākyārthavimarśaḥ svīkṛtaḥ / vaktur iti yadi śortṛvimarśaparyavasāyī śabdavyavahāro vaktṛvimarśapraticchandakarūpo na syāt, tadā śabdair vaktṛvimarśasyāsaṃbandhitvād anumānaṃ na syād ity arthaḥ / tatra cāsāv iti vaktṛśrotṛgate vākyārthavimarśe sūkṣmatvenāsphuṭarūpo 'sty eva paurvāparyapratibhāsa iti yāvat / padārthabuddhāv iti vākyārthapūrvabhāsinyām / tatrāpīti / vaktṛśrotṛgatavākyārthavimarśe 'pi sūkṣmaḥ padārthāśrayo doṣo durnivāraḥ padārthān atikrameṇaiva vākyārthavimarśasya vyavasthitatvād ity arthaḥ / pramādaja iti / evaṃ sati prakraṃsyamānavastuparāmarśadoṣas tāvat parigṛhītā bhavati / pratīpagamanahetor iti gajasetubandhād ity asya / śābdasyeti pañcamyantatvāt / tadīyatīrthābhidhāneti hetuhetumatos tadīyatīrthaśabdena vyavadhāne satīty arthaḥ / gaṅgāviśeṣaṇamukheneti gajasetubandhām iti pāṭhe / ayam atrāśayaḥ - śābdo yatra hetuhetumadbhāvas tatra hetutvenāpanyāsān na tayor vyavadhānaṃ kiṃ cit kāryam, pratītiviprakarṣaprasaṅgāt / ārthe hetuhetumadbhāve upanyastasya hetutvād viśeṣaṇabhūtasya hetor viśeṣyasvarūpavarṇanena caritārthatvāt saty api vyavadhāne na pratītiviprakarṣaḥ kaś cit, paryālocanasāmarthyād dhetutvapratīteḥ / atra ca śloke tīrthe tadīye iti padadvayākaraṇe 'pi vākyārthasya nirākāṅkṣtvāt tatkaraṇam apuṣṭārtham eva / tadeti tacchabdena / iti tacchabdaḥ āropanivṛttāv iti āropo bhramo 'nyasyānyatvena pratītiḥ, yathā navajaladharasya sannaddhadṛptiniśācaratvena / tannivṛttāv atra vakṣyamānāyām āropaviṣayasya jaladharāder vastusataḥ prakāśamānasyedamādinā nyāyye nirdeśe tasya parāmṛśyasamīpa eva prayogeṇa bhāvyam / yas tv avastusadāropyamāṇanikaṭe prayogaḥ sa kramabhedam āvahati / yas tv atraivāropaviṣayasvarūpatayā vidyuto nikaṭa idam ādyaprayogaḥ, tatra dūṣaṇāntarāvakāśaḥ /

      utkhātadrutam iva śailaṃ himahatakamalākaram iva lakṣmīvimuktam /
     pītamadiram iva caṣakaṃ bahulapradoṣam iva mugdhacandrarahitam //

itīveti / atropalambharūpaḥ pūrvavākyārtha itiśabdāvacchinna utprekṣyata ity upālabdhety ataḥ pūrvam itīvaśabdau prayojyau / viṣayāntare tu prayogāt kramabhedaḥ / prāpipayiṣupadeneti pūrvavākyārthasthitena / tadadhīnatvaṃ puruṣāyattatvam / stambaram iti pīnonnatastanadvayadarśanād ayaṃ praśaṃsoktiḥ / ṣidgāḥ viṭāḥ / pratītivaicitryam iti vākyārthasya tilatuṇḍalīkṛtasyāvagamānavagamau / uktisvarūpeti / uktiḥ stamberamaḥ pariṇinaṃsur asāv upaiti ity eṣā / tasyā viṭasaṃbandhinyāḥ svarūpam itiśabdenopalakṣaṇatvād evaṃśabdādinā vyavacchettum iṣṭam / ataś ca tatra tasmād itiśabdād itiśabdopalakṣitād evamādayaś ca prāk pūrvam ukteḥ pūrvapradarśitāyāḥ / anyat kiṃ cit padaṃ ṣidga ityādi na kathanīyam ity arthaḥ / evam udāharaṇāntare 'pi yojanīyam / upādhibhāvād iti itiśabdasya svā śaktiḥ pūrvavākyāvacchedarūpā / tāṃ pūrvatra vākye samarpayaṃs tasyopādhir itiśabdaḥ saṃpadyate / ataś ca na tasyānyatra prayogaḥ karttavya ity arthaḥ / padasyānyasyeti ṣidgair ityādeḥ / anyatheti viṣayāntaraprayoge āsamañjasyaṃ viśarārupratītitvam / ānantaryaniyama iti

     yasya yenābhisaṃbandhā dūrasthasyāpi tena saḥ /
     arthato hy asamānānām ānantaryam akāraṇam //

iti nyāyenārthaucityavaśād vyavahitānām apy ānantaryaniyamo bhaviṣyatīty arthaḥ / anyatas tarhīti / anyato 'rthaucityavaśāt / tatkāryasiddheḥ ityādikarttavyasiddheḥ / iti teṣāṃ prayogo niyataḥ syād ity uktam / nanu yasya yenābhisaṃbandho nyāyyaḥ kutrāvatiṣṭhatām ity āha kaiś cid eveti / ayaṃ bhāvaḥ - ityādiśabdavarjanenoktakrameṇa śabdahetvādivarjanena cānyeṣāṃ śabdānām ayaṃ nyāyaḥ / ityādīnām ayaṃ punar niyataprayogaviṣaya iti / nānyathā teṣāṃ prayogaḥ karttavya iti /

evam uddeśakrameṇa kramabhedaṃ vimṛśya paunaruktyaṃ vicārayitum āha paunaruktyam iti / iha khalu dvividhaṃ paunaruktyaṃ śabdapaunaruktyam arthapaunaruktyaṃ ceti / tad uktam akṣpādamuninā - śabdārthayoḥ punarvacana[ṃ] punaruktam anyatrānuvādād iti / tatra śabdapaunaruktyam arthāpaunaruktye na doṣaḥ, arthapaunaruktyena duṣṭatva[ṃ] arthasyaiva prayojakatvāt / arthapaunaruktyam evaikaṃ paunaruktyaṃ na śabdapaunaruktyam iti samudāyārthaḥ / ārtham iti arthāśritam / evaṃ śābdam ity atrāpi vācyam / yad uktam iti vādanyāye / hasatīti eko hasatiśabdaḥ śatrantaḥ svāmiviśeṣaṇam, aparaḥ kriyāpadam / evam uttaratra vācyam / yantram iti / abhedopacāreṇa bhṛtyasya nirdeśaḥ kṛtānukāritvāt / anyatra tātparyabhedād iti tātparyabhede hi svarūpārthāviśeṣe lāṭānuprāsa iṣṭaḥ / tad uktaṃ -

     svarūpārthāviśeṣe hi punaruktiḥ phalāntarāt /
     śabdānāṃ vā padānāṃ vā lāṭānuprāsa iṣyate //

iti / śakrasaṅkāśeti śrīnadīhaṃseti medinīcandreti vidviṣāṃ kāleti ca catvāryāmantraṇāṇi / atra tātparyabhedaḥ sphuṭa eva / tathā caikaḥ kāśaśabdo vastrāṇām upameyatvena sthitaḥ, anyas tu hasānām upamānatveneti bhinnaṃ tātparyam / evam anyad api yojanīyam / ubhayābhāve iti arthabhedasya tātparyabhedasya cābhāva ity arthaḥ / na ca ghāseti karmatvena saṃbandhitvena cāstu tātparyabheda ity arthaḥ / etan na ceti niṣidhyate / svārtham iti / etad uktaṃ bhavati - na svārthābhidhānam eva tātparyam, api tu saty eva svārthābhidhāne 'dhikam arthāntaronmukhatvaṃ tātparyaṃ, yathā kāśaśabdayoḥ / tatra kāśajātyavacchinnadravyapratipādanād atirikta upamānopameyabhāvaḥ pratipādyate / na caivaṃbisaśabdayoḥ / na hy atra bisajātyavacchinnadravyātiriktaṃ kiṃ cid vastu pratīyate / yat tu karmatvaṃ saṃbandhitvaṃ ca tadabhidheyasyaiva tathāvasthānaṃ nodrekeṇānyatām āvahatīti svaśabdaparihāreṇa sarvanāmaparāmarśasyaiva viṣayo nyāyya iti / nanu punaruktaṃ kim ucyate yatra tat prayogaṃ vinārthapratītiḥ yatra ca tatsamānapadāntaraprayogo 'vaśyam upayujyate, tatra kathaṃ punaruktatvam / yatraikārthena pratītir na tātparyabhedaḥ, tatra punaruktatvaṃ pratītivairasyāpādānāt / yatra tu tat samānaṃ padāntaram upayujyatāṃ mā vā / sarvathā tatprayogakṛta vairasyaṃ paunaruktyaprayojakam iti tadāśrayeṇāyaṃ doṣa uktaḥ /

sarvanāmeti jakṣur bisam ity atra nirdiṣṭaṃ bisam uttaratra prasūnasaṃbandhitvena sarvanāmaparāmarśārhaṃ sad yat svaśabdenoktaṃ, tat śabdapunaruktam / yady apy arthapunaruktam evaikaṃ punaruktaṃ prāg uktaṃ tathāpi śabdasya punaruktatety uktam arthamukhenaiva śabdasyāpi punaruktatety abhiprāyeṇa / sarvanāmaparāmarśayogyasyeti nirdiṣṭāṃ yogyatāṃ vibhaktum āha - prādhānyam iti / dvividhaṃ parāmarśayogyatvaṃ śābdam ārthaṃ ceti / tatra yasmin parāmṛśyasya svātantryeṇa kartṛtvādinā nirdeśena prādhānyaṃ tatra śābdam / yatra punaḥ parāmṛśyasyānyaḥ kaś cit saṃbandhitvena nirdiśyate, tatrārtham / tatra hi saṃbandhinaṃ prati asyopayoga eva yogyatvam / tathā caikam udāhṛtam / saṃbandhipratītimukheneti / atra saṃbandhī haraḥ tasya maulidvāreṇa śaśāṅkasaṃbandhitvāt / tatpratītimukhena cātra śaśāṅkaḥ pratīyate, na tu cārutā vapur ityādau cārutāder iva sākṣād eva śaśāṅkasya pratītiḥ / śaśāṅkasaṃbandhinām iti / atra saṃbandhinibandha iti kārikāyāṃ yaḥ saṃbandhī yuktaḥ, sa nirdiṣṭaḥ / tathā cātrāṃśavaḥ saṃbandhitvena nirdiṣṭāḥ / tatparāmarśayogyateti tacchabdena parāmṛśyaḥ śaśāṅko nirdiṣṭaḥ / sā hi guṇībhūtasyeti / haramanyapadārthaṃ prati niśāpatir guṇībhūtaḥ / tasyāpi niśā guṇībhūtā / sā ca bhuvaneti / atra na nagendratanayāyāḥ saṃbandhī nirdiṣṭaḥ / api tu sā cety anena svarūpam nirdiṣṭam / vihasto na kva cic chaktaḥ / samāsagatasyeti parāmṛśyasyeti saṃbandhaḥ / tatra hi parāmṛśyasya samāse guṇībhāvāt saṃbandhinaś cānirdeśāt parāmarśo na nyāyyaḥ /

na sarvajanasaṃvedanīya iti / asyārthaḥ - yathāsmai rocate viśvaṃ tathedaṃ parivartate iti nyāyenātrātiprauḍhatayā granthakāro nijāyattāṃ padārthavyavasthāṃ karttum ārabdhaḥ, yena tadaṃśunicitaḥ iti tat tamasām iti ca śaśāṅkasya niśāyāś ca tacchabdena parāmarśam aghaṭamānam api samarthayate, jakṣur bisaṃ ghṛtavikāsibisaprasūnā ity atra ca bisaprasūnaśabdasya saṃjñāpadasyāpi bisaśabdāśrayeṇa sūkṣmekṣikayā paunaruktyaṃ doṣam udbhāvayati / na caitat samarthanaṃ hṛdayahāri, yasmāc chaśāṅkamaulir iti ca niśāpatimaulir iti ca saṃjñāśabdāv etau / saṃjñāśabdānāṃ ca vidyamānasyāpy arthānugamasya na prayojakatvaṃ rūḍheḥ prādhānyāt / tataś cātra na śaśāṅkārtho na niśārthaḥ kaś cit / kiṃ tūpāyamātreṇaitāv arthāv āśritya saṃjñiviśeṣa evātra vivakṣitaḥ / evaṃ ca saṃjñyantargatayoḥ śaśāṅkaniśayos tacchabdaparāmarśena sahṛdayahṛdayāny āvarjayatīti haṭhasarmathanam etat / kiṃ ca śaśāṅkamaulir ity atra varaṃ śaśāṅkasya bhavatu sarvanāmnā parāmarśaḥ tasya vakrākṛtes tatra saṃnihitatvāt, niśāpatimaulir ity atra tu niśāyāḥ parāmarśaḥ pāpāt pāpīyān niśāpater evoktakrameṇa tatra saṃnihitatvāt / niśāyā upalakṣaṇamātratvenopayoginyās tatra saṃbhavābhāvāt / yatra ca tasyā eva na saṃbhavas tatra kā vārtā tamasām / tad ayam andho maṇim avindat / tam anaṅgulir āvayad iti nyāya āyāt / api ca yatra prasāritānugamena śabdena saṃjñinaḥ pratyāyanaṃ kriyate, paraṃ tatrānugamotkarṣād bhavati sarvanāmaparāmarśaḥ / yathā -

     utsavāya jagataḥ sa jāyatāṃ rohiṇīramaṇakhaṇḍamaṇḍanaḥ /
     tatprabhābhir iva pūritaṃ vapur bhāti yasya sitabhasmaguṇṭhitam //

iti / atra hi pādavyāpinī saṃjñānvarthatvam evotkarṣayati / tenātra parāmarśo nāpratītikaraḥ / prakṛte tu tādṛśy api gatir nāsti / āstāṃ vā prakṛtam / atrāpi hi rohiṇīramaṇetyādau yadi sūkṣmekṣikā kriyate tadā saṃjñāprādhānyāt tadaṃśasya sarvanāmaparāmarśo nāduṣṭatām bhajate / prakṛte tu pāpāt pāpīyān parāmarśaḥ / kṛtaṃ cātra samarthanaṃ granthakṛtā / tad etad asya viśvam agaṇanīyaṃ manyamānasya svātmanaḥ sarvotkarṣaśālitākhyāpanam iti /

granthakarttuḥ punar ayam āśayaḥ - iha tu dvividhāḥ saṃjñāśabdāḥ rūḍhā yogarūḍhayaś ca / tatra rūdḥānām arthānugamābhāvāt tadanusaraṇaṃ na karttavyam / ye tu yogarūḍhayas teṣāṃ yadi yoga utkaṭatāṃ bhajate tadāśrayo vyavahāro na duṣyati / ata eva nimittabalena pravṛttasya śabdasya nimittāntarbhāve prayogaḥ saugatair niṣiddha eva / yad āhuḥ -


     naimittikāḥ śruter artham arthaṃ vāparamārthikam /
     śabdānām anurundhāno na bādhas tena varṇitaḥ //

iti / evaṃ sthite yogāśrite vyavahāre yadi saṃjñāvayavabhūtārthasyāvyabhicārī kaś cit pratipipādayiṣitaḥ syāt tadā tadabhisaṃbandhāya tasyāvayavasya sarvanāmaparāmarśo na duṣṭaḥ / yad uktam - sarvanāmnānusaṃdhivṛtticchannasya iti / maulir ity atra śaśāṅkāvyabhicāriṇo raśmayaḥ saṃbandhitvena pratipāditāḥ / niśāpatimaulir ity atra niśāvyabhicārīṇi tamāṃsi / teṣāṃ cāvāstavatvam api na tathā duṣṭam, utprekṣāgocaratvena pratipāditatvāt / kevalaṃ pūrvatra saṃjñisaṃbandhī, paratra tu saṃbandhisaṃbandhī parāmṛṣṭa iti viśeṣaḥ / tad evaṃ yaugikānāṃ saṃjñāśabdānāṃ yoganimitto vyavahāraḥ kva cit kva cit suvyavasthita eva / yat tu kuryāṃ harasyāpi pinākapāṇer ity atra pinākapāṇipadasya saṃjñāśabdasya sato 'rthānugamo nivārayiṣyate yena saṃjñāvagamārthaṃ haraśabdaḥ prayuktaḥ, tan nārthānugamābhāvapratipādanapareṇa, kiṃ tv anugamyamānasyārthasya saṃrambhāspadatvena vivakṣitatvaṃ pṛthak saṃjñāpadaprayogam antareṇa na nirvahati saṃjñārthasyārthānugamasya ca yugapat prādhānyābhāvād iti dvayaprayoga evaivaṃvidheṣu sthāneṣu śasyata ity abhiprāyeṇa / prakṛte vastusvarūpamātrapratipādane saṃjñāśabdatve 'py arthānugamānusaraṇam avyāhatam iti / itarathety ubhayavidhayogyatābhāve parāmṛśyapratīter abhāvād ity arthaḥ / atra tv iti / jakṣur bisam ity atra / saṃbandhinaḥ prasūnasya nibandhane upādāne / ārtha iti / kriyākārakabhāvasyākhyātapadavācyatvena śābdena krameṇa prastāve 'tra viśeṣaṇadvāreṇa samāsena pra to 'rthaḥ pratīter ārthatvam / taccānekaprakāram iti tacchabdena paunaruktyaṃ parāmṛṣṭam / saṃkṣepeṇa pañcaprakāraṃ paunaruktya nirdiśyate / aśvīyeti / atra keśāśvābhyāṃ yañchau iti samūhe 'rthe chapratyayaḥ / evaṃ chapratyayaḥ saṃhatiśabdaś ca bhisaḥ prakṛtitvena nirdiṣṭau punar uktau / aśvair ity eva hi vācyam / biseti bisakisalayacchedapātheyā iti tvaguttarāsaṅgām iti ca vācyam / bahuvrīhīti matvarthe bahuvrīhividhānam / karmadhārayamatvarthīyābhyām iti / karmadhārayamatvarthīyau samuccayenāvasthitau vṛttilāghavād bahuvrīhiṇā bādhyete ity arthaḥ /

nanu -

     bhūmanindāpraśaṃsāsu nityayoge 'tiśāyane /
     saṃsarge 'stivivakṣāyāṃ bhavanti matubādayaḥ //

iti bahavo bhūmādayo 'rthā astyartham anugacchanto mattvarthīyatāviṣayatvenoktāḥ / te kim iti na bahuvrīhivācyatvenoktā ity āha mator iti / matubgrahaṇaṃ matvarthīyānām upalakṣaṇam / bhūmādayo hy arthā na kevalebhyo matubādibhyaḥ pratīyante, kiṃ tu prakraṇādisahāyebhyas tebhya iti na matubādivicāreṇodāhriyante, nāntarīyakatayā teṣāṃ gatatvāt / jāmbaveti tadīyeti vanyeti ca taddhitapratyayasya paunaruktyam / jambūpallavānīti, tanmātaṅgeti, vanakariṇām iti ca ṣaṣṭhīsamāsenaiva taddhitakarmadhārayalakṣaṇavṛttidvayārthapratīteḥ / vārtraghneti vṛtraghna indrasyāpatyam atra vivakṣitaṃ, nedam artha iti nātra taddhitasya paunaruktyam / samūhārthāyā iti / grāmajanabandhusahāyebhyaḥ iti samūhe talpratyayaḥ / atra janaśabdenaiva samūhārthapratītes talpratyayarūpāyāḥ prakṛter bahuvacanasya pratyayasya ca paunaruktyam / pūrvavad iti dalatkandaleti lambāmbudam iti phullāmbujā iti ca bahuvrīhiṇaiva bhajaty arthādīnāṃ pratīteḥ punar uktatvam / viśeṣyamātreti viśeṣyasyāviśiṣṭaviśeṣyarūpatayā viśiṣṭaviśeṣyarūpatayā vā pratītiḥ / tatra viśiṣṭaviśeṣyarūtayā pratītau yatra viśeṣaṇamātrād eva viśeṣyasyaiva pratītiḥ, tatra viśeṣyaprayogo na duṣyati yathā tatra prasādād ity atra vakṣyate / kiṃ tūpāyamatreṇaitāva bhavaśabdasyeti śītakiraṇābharaṇa ity anenaiva pratītatvād bhavārthasya, yathā nidhānagarbhām iva sāgarāmbarām ity atra sāgarāmbarāśabdena medinyāḥ / camūrur mṛgaviśeṣaḥ / kuthaḥ varṇakambalaḥ / ekatarasyeti indravāhanaśabdaprayoge kuthasāmarthyān nāgendrapratītir nāgendraśabdaprayoge ca śuklavarṇasya varṇitatvād indravāhanapratītir ity ekatarasyaiva prayogo nyāyyaḥ / yatra tad ityādinā viśiṣṭaviśeṣyarūpatayā viśeṣyapratipattim udāharati / tadviśeṣaḥ viśeṣyagato viśeṣaḥ / haraśabdasyeti pinākapāṇiśabdena haragato viśeṣaḥ pratipādyate yaḥ sarvotkarṣahetutvena vivakṣito na sajñimātram ity arthaḥ / viśeṣyopādānam antareṇāpīti / kusumāyudhaśabdo 'pi hi viśeṣaṇam api viśeṣyam avagamayaty avyabhicārāt / na tu tasya pṛthakprayogaḥ / atrāpīti pinākapāṇer ity atra liṅuttamapuruṣeṇaiveti asmady uttamaḥ ity atra hi sthāniny apīty anuvartanād aprayukte 'py asmacchabde tadarthasaṃbhave uttamapuruṣo bhavaty eva / tadanupādānaṃ viśeṣyānupādānam / anyeṣām iti / bahuvacanād īdṛkṣu sthāneṣv ekenaivevaśabdena gatārthatvād anyeṣāṃ prayogo viphala ity abhiprāyaḥ / tṛtīyasyāpīti vākyārthaupamyavivakṣāyām eka evevaśabdaḥ prayoktavyaḥ / padārthaupamyavivakṣaṇe tu yāvanto viśeṣyabhūtāḥ padārthās tāvanta ivaśabdāḥ prayoktavyāḥ / na tv ardhajaratīyaṃ kāryam ity arthaḥ / etac cābhyupagamavādenoktam / na tu saṃbhavantyāṃ vākyārthopamāyāṃ padārthopamāḥ kāryā ity asya pakṣaḥ / tathā ca dine dine ityādinā dūṣayiṣyati / dine dine iti / atra cāndramasyā lekhāyā pārvatyupamānaṃ, viśeṣāṇāṃ tu kalāntarāṇi / viśeṣāṇāṃ ca lāvaṇyamayān iti viśeṣaṇam / tatsthanīyaṃ kalāntarāṇāṃ jyotsnāntarāṇīti / jyotsnāntare yeṣām iti hi vyākhyā / dine dine ityādi pārvatīndulekhayoḥ sādhāraṇo dharmaḥ / na tu kalāntarāṇi kartṝṇi jyotsnāntarāṇi puṣṇatīti sādhvī vyākhyā vacanabhedādidoṣaprasaṅgāt / atra cāndramasīva lekhā kalāntarāṇi puṣṇātīty ekenaivevaśabdena gatārthatve dvitīyasyevaśabdasya paunaruktyam / yaṃ sametyeti / atra yam ity asya caṇḍamāruta upamānaṃ, cedipadasya ca pradīpaḥ / tulyārthe vatiḥ / vilocanapraśamanād eva śambhuvibhramatyāgaḥ / atra ca datte 'pi pāṭhe karmabhūtayor upameyopamānayor lalāṭalekhayetyādivijātīyapadagarbhitatvaṃ vikṛtapadaprayogo vairasyaṃ ca dupariharam eva / tena caṇḍamārutanavapradīpavad iti pāṭhaḥ śreyān / evaṃ hi miśabdasthāne naśabdamātrakaraṇena stokamātravyatyāsena saukaryeṇa doṣaparihārapratītiḥ saundaryaṃ ca / malayajārdram iveti himāṃśukhaṇḍasyotprekṣyatvenopanibaddham ākāṅkṣāsaṃnidhisāmarthyāl lalāṭataṭasya viśeṣaṇaṃ paryavasyatīti kaver abhiprāyaḥ / vastutas tv ivaśabdaprayogam antareṇāpīṣṭasiddher ivaśabdaḥ punar uktaḥ / na candrakhaṇḍasya malayajārdratvotprekṣaṇe prayojanaṃ kiṃ cit / yatra caitad dhi viśeṣaṇam upayujyate, tatrevaśabdaprayogo vyarthaḥ / tadabhinnārtheneti samāse ivārthagarbhīkārāt / viparyayeṇeti lalāṭataṭanikaṭe prayogārhatvāt / varam iti ivaśabdasya bhinnakramatvāparihārād anavatṛptiḥ / kevalaṃ hārīty asya samāsākaraṇād ivārthāpratīter ivaśabdo na punar ukta iti paunaruktyaparihāraḥ kṛtaḥ / aho aparyanteti od iti pragṛhyasaṃjñā / upamārūpaketyādinā

     alaṅkārasya kavayo yatrālaṅkaraṇāntaram /
     asaṃtuṣṭā nibadhnanti hārāder maṇibandhavad

iti / vakroktijīvitakṛtas tu tam alaṅkārapuṣṭhapātinam alaṅkāraṃ dūṣayati / nirmokam uktim iveti atropamārūpakatvaṃ paraprasiddhyoktam / na tv idam upamārūpakam / utprekṣārūpakaṃ tu syāt, nirmokam uktas saṃbhāvyamānatvena pratīteḥ / tathā hi nirmokānuguṇyāt tāvat gaganasyorageṇa rūpaṇam / nirvyūḍhe ca rūpake nirmokam uktir na tāṭasthyena pratīyate, kiṃ tu gaganoragasaṃbandhitvena / gaganoragasaṃbandhitvena ca pratītau na sādṛśyam api tv adhyavasāyaḥ / tasya ca pravṛttamānatvam ity utprekṣaiva jyāyāsī pratītau / ataś ceyaṃdaṃmuktipadaṃ kṛtam / anyathā śuddhasādṛśyapratipādane dharmy eva viśiṣṭo nirmoka upamānatvena nirdeśyaḥ syāt / bhinnaliṅgayor upamāyā duṣṭatvān na nirdiṣṭa iti cen na / sādhāraṇadharmasyānirdeśe nirdiṣṭasyāpi vā dvairūpyābhāve bhinnaliṅgasaṅkhyayor api strīva gacchati ṣaṇḍo 'yam ityādau hantāvahanti doṣā iva nṛpatīnāṃ guṇa iha sahaivadurvinayam ityādau copamānopameyabhāvasyeṣṭatvāt / tasmād upamāyāṃ nirmoka iveti syāt / utprekṣāyāṃ kriyāmātrotprekṣaṇam upapadyata ity utprekṣārūpakam etat paramārthataḥ / etad asmābhir harṣacaritavārttike vistṛtya pratipāditaṃ tata evāvaseyam / evaṃ paraśur ivetyādau vācyam / tamoraṇyavahner ivārcir iti / atra tamaso 'raṇyena rūpeṇa vahnir arcissaṃbandhitayā vivakṣitaḥ samāse niveśanīyaḥ, yato na kaś cid atra nirdiṣṭaḥ yo vahninā rūpyeta / tasmāt tamoraṇyasya vahnyarcir iti vaktavyam ity atra vācyāvacanaṃ doṣaḥ / ālānam iti saty eva sādṛśye āropyāropakabhāvasya nidarśanam / cumbatīveti / atroprekṣārthe prayuktasyevaśabdasya lakṣaṇāsamarthitenārthena kṛtārthatvāt punaruktatvam /

atra copamārūpakābhimate evaṃvidhe ca pradeśe granthakāro hevākitayaiva dūṣaṇam adāt / tathā śabdārthayor vicchittir alaṅkāraḥ / vicchittiś ca kavipratibhollāsarūpatvāt kavipratibhollāsasya cānantyād anantatvaṃ bhajamānā na paricchettuṃ śakyate / ata evoktaṃ dhvanikṛtā

     vācaspatisahasrāṇāṃ sahasrair api yatnataḥ /
     nibaddhā sā kṣayaṃ naiti prakṛtir jagatām iva //

     ajjavi abhiṇṇam uddo pajaai vāāparipphando

iti / evaṃ ca yadi vicchttyantarāpekṣayā tasya vicchittyantarasya paunaruktyaṃ tadopamāyā rūpakādyapekṣayā paunaruktyaṃ syāt / upamāpekṣayā hi rūpakam atiśayoktir vā balīyasī / na caivaṃ prayujyate, vivakṣāyā nānātvāt / tathā hi kva cit sādṛśyamātraṃ vivakṣitam / tatrāpi kva cid abhedaḥ / tasminn api kvacid āropaḥ / kvacid adhyavasāyaḥ / adhyavasāye 'pi kva cit sādhyatvaṃ kva cit siddhatvam ityādikrameṇānantaprakāraṃ vicchittivaicitryam / tatrāpi saṃyojanakrameṇa navaṃ vicchittivaicitryam anubhūyamānam āśritaṃ ca mahākavibhiḥ kathaṃ saṃkṣeparucitvenāpahnūyate / na hīdaṃ vākyaṃ lakṣaṇaśāstraṃ, yena mātrālāghavaṃ cintyate / tatrāpi vā na niyamena lāghavam āśritaṃ mahadbhiḥ / tathā hi vāgrahaṇasya sthāne 'nyatarasyāṃ grahaṇam api kṛtam / vicchittivaicitryaṃ tair apy āśritam eva / tad uktaṃ vicitrā hi sūtrasya kṛtiḥ pāṇineḥ iti / evaṃ cātra kṛte 'pi rūpake utprekṣādinibandhaḥ kam api guṇam utkarṣayati na doṣam iti sahṛdayair nipuṇaṃ nirūpaṇīyam / na tu hevākasya paścāl laganīyam ity āstāṃ tāvat / prakṛtam anusarāmaḥ //

murmuraḥ aṅgāraḥ / āmravaṇasyeti pranirantar ṇatvam / pathikavrajān parita iti / paritaśśabdayoge abhitaḥ paritaḥ samayānikaṣā iti dvitīyā / atra dadhur ivetīvaśabdaḥ punar ukta eva, vastvantarabhūtānāṃ rajaḥkaṇānāṃ vastvantarabhūtamurmuracūrṇatvadhāraṇena suṣṭhusādṛśyapratīteḥ / evaṃ -

     tat pātu vaḥ śrīpatinābhipadmaṃ svādhyāyaśālā kamalāsanasya /
     dīrghair ninādair dadhate 'nukāraṃ sāmadhvanīnām iva yatra bhṛṅgāḥ //

ityādāv anukāraśabdaprayoge ivādiśabdaprayogasya paunaruktyam avaseyam / prativastvalaṅkārād iti pūrṇaḥ śaśāṅkābhyudayam ākāṅkṣati mahārṇavaḥ iti prativastūpamayā sādṛśyapratītau dṛṣṭāntaśabdoktir duṣṭā / na ca dṛṣṭāntālaṅkāratvaṃ pratipādayituṃ dṛṣṭāntaśabdaḥ, dṛṣṭāntaśabdād dṛṣṭāntālaṅkāratvāpratīteḥ / na hi ṣaṣṭhyādiparihāreṇa saṃbandhiśabdāt saṃbandhapratītiḥ rasaśabdād vā rasapratītiḥ / adūraviprakarṣeṇa tv abhidhānaṃ vastusaṃsparśi bhavatīti / nanu svakaṇṭhenābhidhānam apahāya kim iti sādṛśyapratītir āśrīyata ity āha vācyo hy artha iti / pūrvavad iti / pūrvaṃ yathā ālānam ity ādau rūpakamukhenopamānopameyabhāvaḥ kathitas tadvad iha dīpakamukhenety arthaḥ / atra ca dvayoḥ prabhādhenvoḥ prākaraṇikatvāt tulyayogitām adyatanā manyante / dvayor api prākaraṇikatve mahāprakaraṇāpekṣayā dhenoḥ prakṛṣṭaṃ prākaraṇikatvaṃ prabhāyās tv aprakrṣṭam ity etadapekṣayā cirantanair dīpakam etat sthāpitam / tadapekṣayātrānena tadvācoyuktiḥ kṛtā / evam alaṅkārāntareṣv api samāsoktyapastutapraśaṃsādiṣu / tatrāpy upamānopameyabhāvaḥ svakaṇṭhena nopanibandhanīyaḥ / tathā -

     draviṇam āpadi bhūṣaṇam utsave śaraṇam ātmabhaye niśi dīpikāḥ /
     bahuvidhārthyupakārabharakṣamo bhavati ko 'pi bhavān iva san maṇiḥ //

ity atrāprastutapraśaṃsayā bhavadarthasya sadṛśatvena pratīteḥ punar vacanaṃ na karttavyam iti vakṣyate / asmābhiś caitat prapañco bṛhatyāṃ kariṣyate / itinaiveti itiśabdo hetvarthah prayujyamānaḥ svabhāvataḥ pūrvavākyārthasyocyamānatvaṃ bodhyamānatvaṃ vā garbhīkṛtya pravartate / varam iti uktadoṣadvayanivāraṇamātram etat / na tu sarvathā niravadyam idam, yataśśabdātaśśabdayor vaiyarthyāt / anibandhanasyeti na hi pūraṇīyapūrakatvena duṣṭatvam / aviśeṣaṇa iti viśeṣaṇadānārtham avyabhicāriṇo 'pi prayogaḥ śasyata ity arthaḥ tathā cāha vāmanaḥ - viśeṣaṇasya ca iti / vyalokyateti vilokanakriyaiva lokitāraṃ lokam ākṣipatīti lokaśabdasya paunaruktyam / dvaya'rpāti prasthānavaśān nītivaśāc cāśrīyante / gām iti gośabdasya vākparyāyasya vacanakriyāyām avyabhicārāt prayogo na kāryaḥ / dṛṣṭa iti darśanakriyāyā dṛg eva karaṇatvenākṣipteti dṛkśabdaḥ punar uktaḥ / kārakāntareṣv apīti yathā sthāne tiṣṭhati ity atrādhikaraṇasya paunaruktyam / vivikte sthāne tiṣṭhatīti tu viśeṣaṇārthaṃ prayogo na duṣṭaḥ / ekaiveti ekaivopamādiḥ / śābdatvaṃ śrautatvaṃ yathevādiśabdaprayogāt / ārthatvaṃ sadṛśādiśabdaprayogāt / atisphuṭām iti sthūladṛṣṭyaiva dṛśyām ity arthaḥ / umāvṛṣāṅkāv iti / atra śarajanmanā yathetyādinā pratīto 'py upamānopameyabhāvas tatsadṛśenetyādinā punar uktaḥ / kaves tu nandananimittaḥ pūrva upamānopameyabhāvaḥ / pratīyamānaprabhāvādinimittas tv aparaḥ / tathā cāyaṃ dilīpa iti rājendur induḥ kṣīranidhāv iva ity evaṃvidham upamānopameyabhāvam ātanoti / granthakāras tu viśiṣṭopamānanirdeśān nāntarīyakatayā prabhāvādipratītir bhavatīti na dvirupādānaṃ kāryam iti manyate / yasyeti yasya pūrvatāder yadrūpatāyāḥ priyatamādirūpatvasyābhivyaktiḥ sāmarthyāl liṅgaviśeṣaśliṣṭapadopanibandhanarūpād bhavati, tasya parvatādeḥ tadarthaṃ priyatamādirūpatvapratītyartham upamā rūpakaṃ vā yan nibadhyate, tat punar uktam ity arthaḥ / uravo mahāntaḥ payodharā meghāḥ urū ca payodharau stanau ca / samayāt saṅgatety arthaḥ / ārdranakhakṣatam iveti bhinnakrama ivaśabdaḥ / yāpito gamitaḥ nirvāhita ity arthaḥ / upamānād eveti ākārasādṛśyena palāśaṃ prati dīyamānād ārdranakhakṣatam ity asmāt / tadviśeṣaṇopādānam iti ramaṇadattam ity ārdranakhakṣataviśeṣaṇopādānaṃ madayāpitalajjayeti pramadāviśeṣaṇopādānaṃ cety arthaḥ / yata iti nakhakṣatam ivety upamopakṛtāt surabhivanamālādīnāṃ puṃstvastrītvanirdeśād ity arthaḥ / strīpuṃsatvānumitir iti prathamavimarśoktaprakāreṇa vyakter anumitirūpatvenopapāditatvāt / aindraṃ dhanur iti atyanteti ābhogīti codāharaṇatrayaṃ vaidharmyakrameṇoktam / upapannakramasyāsya sadbhāvāt / nāyakatvapratināyakatve iti / anumīyate iti śeṣaḥ / evam aṅganeva maṇistambhāv iti anumīyata iti śeṣaḥ / bhogī vāsukeḥ sa eva netram ākarṣaṇarajjus tasya ā samantād yat parivartanarūpo viśeṣeṇa bhramo bhramaṇaṃ, tena mandarasya mūrttiḥ nitambe madhyabhāge valanaṃ parivarttanaṃ tenākulā jātā / tathā ābhogi vistāravat yan netraṃ nayanaṃ tasya parivartanaṃ kaṭākṣīkaraṇaṃ sa eva vibhramo vilāsaḥ / mūrttyā samāropitanāyikāvyavahārayā / utkalikās taraṅgā ruhiruhikāś ca hṛdayaṃ madhyadeśāś cittaṃ ca / ārohārtha iti āroḍhum iti pūrvaślokabhāgagataḥ / hṛdayārthaś ceti / hṛdayam ambunidher ity atra sthitiḥ / tayor iti āroho jīvavyāpāraviśeṣaḥ / hṛdayaṃ jīvakāyaikadeśaviśeṣaḥ / alaṅkārāntaratvam iti sādṛśyāl lakṣaṇā vakroktir ityādiprakāreṇa / lākṣaṇikahṛdayādiśabdaprayoge svaśabdaṃ vināpy arthāntaraṃ pratīyata ity āha yadartheti / yatropameye 'mbunidhiprabhṛtau / yadarthaikāśrayo nāyakādirūpopamānaviṣayo dharmo hṛdayādir āropito lakṣaṇayā bhavet, tayor nāyakāder upamānasyāmbunidhyādeś copameyasyopamānopameyabhāvaḥ śābdo neṣyate / gamyamānas tv iṣṭa evety arthaḥ / atraiva aparāgetyādinā śābdatve doṣodāharaṇam āha / mūlāny amātyādiprakṛtivargaḥ vṛkṣāvabandhanāni ca unmūlayituṃ sukara iti yojanā / tad dhīti upamānopameyatvam / rūpakaṃ yatheti / tasyopamā rūpakaṃ vā ity anusaṃdhatte / anurāgo lauhityam api / apiśabdaḥ sukhādipadanikaṭe yojanīyaḥ / vasuśabdas tejodhanayoḥ / atra niṣkāsanam utkaṭatvena gaṇikādharmo rūpakasya sādhakaḥ pramāṇam / kāryataś ceti kāryam atra niṣkāsanam / tadviśeṣasya strītvaviśeṣasya gaṇikārūpasyeti / ubhayārtheti dvyarthapadaprayogaḥ pāṇḍupayodhareṇa ityādau / liṅgaviśeṣaḥ śarad raveḥ ityādau / guṇavṛtti padam āroḍhuṃ hṛdayam ityādau / upamānaviśeṣo yathā ārdranakhakṣatābham ityādau / ākrośo gālidānam / paryāyoktīti yena rāhustrīstanayoḥ kārkaśyalakṣmīr vṛthā kṛtety anena bhaṅgyantareṇa rāhoḥ śiraśchedaḥ prakāśita iti tatsādhanam asādhāraṇaṃ cakraṃ pratīyata evety arthaḥ / padādīti padādigatānām akṣarāṇām anuprāso gumphabhaṅgī darśayan kavīnām atyantavallabha ity arthaḥ / kalabhāṣiṇīti / atra kamalekṣaṇe ity arthānuguṇaḥ pāṭhaḥ / anyathānuprāsahevākitaiva syāt / śatrur eva śātrava iti prajñāditvāt svārthe 'ṇ / tadrūpaṇam eveti upamāpekṣayā rūpakasya gamyamānaupamyatvāt prayogārhatve 'pi sāmarthyāvagatarūpatvād yatrābhidhānaṃ punar uktaṃ tatropamāyāṃ paunaruktye kā śaṅkā iti / ivaśabdasyeti mūrcchita iva mūrcchayatīty arthapratīteḥ siddhatvāt / viṣādisaṃparkād dhi mohaṃ prāptaḥ parān api mohayatīti prasiddham / ayaṃ mandadyutir iti nidarśanāyāṃ mamevety arthāt pratītaṃ na punar upāttam / mumūrccheti prasasārety arthaḥ / bādhakasadbhāvābhāva iti / anena yatraikasyaiva viśeṣaṇasyopamānopameyasaṃbandhabādhakam asti tatra pṛthakprayoge 'pi na doṣaḥ, yathā -

     cakorya eva caturāś candrikācāmakarmaṇi /
     āvantya eva nipuṇāḥ sadṛśo ratanarmaṇi //

ityādau prativastūpamāyām ity āha / atra hīvādiśabdābhāve sati vākyabhedaḥ / prākaraṇikatvopamānopameyabhāvapratītau sādharaṇadharmasya pṛthakprayogam antareṇa vākyārthasaṅgatir na bhavatīti pṛthak prayogo na duṣṭaḥ / tadvacanam iti sahajapadena svābhāvikatvavacanam / tulyavibhaktīnām arthāt upamānopameyānām / eṣā nirdhāraṇe ṣaṣṭhī / etanmadhye ekasyety arthaḥ / paryāyair iti / svābhāvikapadādiṣu kṛteṣu sahajapadādibhiḥ / samāsāntarapadāśrayaṇeneti umā ca mā ca umāme / tayoḥ dhavāv ityādi dvandvapūrvakatatpuruṣāśrayeṇety arthaḥ / chāyānihatapadayor iti prathamaṃ chāyāśabdaḥ dvitīyaś nihataśabdaḥ kartavyaḥ syād iti dārṣṭāntikakrameṇaiva dṛṣṭāntāv uktau / astv iti chāyānihataśabdayoḥ prayogaḥ / ubhayor apīti / dvandvapūrvakasya bahuvrīher bahuvrīhipūrvakasya vā dvandvasyety arthaḥ / etac ca dṛṣṭāntagatatvenoktam api dārṣṭāntikagatatvenāpi paryavasānaṃ neyam / dārṣṭāntike hītthaṃ yojanā / tatpuruṣapūrvasya dvandvasya dvandvapūrvasya vā tatpuruṣasya lakṣaṇānugamaḥ saṃbhavatīti / tadarthatvād ity uktaṃ vidheyāvimarśavicāre / yāvadbhir iti padair ity arthāt / tatpuruṣalakṣaṇāśrayeṇeti prakṛte dvandvalakṣaṇapūrvakatvaṃ jñeyam / evaṃ na dvandvalakṣaṇam ity atra tatpuruṣalakṣaṇapūrvakatvaṃ boddhavyam / tasyeti dvandvasya / atajjātīya iti yatra tatpuruṣaśaṅkā nāstīti pārvatīparameśvarāv ity atrāpi parameśvarapade karmadhārayāśrayaṇadarśanena tatpuruṣapūrvakatvaṃ yojanīyam / avāntaracintayeti paunaruktyaprastāve samāsacintayety arthaḥ / atra mādhavaśabdasya yaugikatve 'pi samṃjñātvena nrūḍher umāmādhavāv iti prayoge umāyā mādhavasya ca spṛṣṭatvena pratītir na tu dvandvapūrvakatatpuruṣārthasyeti dvandvalakṣaṇaṃ nātīva hṛdayaṅgamam ity āhuḥ / rekhā hīti rekhā maryādā avadhiḥ sīmeti paryāyāḥ / tatra heyapakṣapratikṣepeṇa prayogo yathā saṃsāreti / atra saṃsārasaṃbhavasya nirākaraṇam iti heyasya pratikṣepaḥ / upādeyaparigraho yathā tvaṣṭur iti / atra saṃpadaḥ prasaro vistāra ity upādeyasya parigrahaḥ / indūdayasyeva saṃnibhā yasyeti atra saṃnibhāśabdaḥ prabhāparyāyo vyākhyātaḥ / yathā tu dāṇḍo granthas tathā saṃnibhaśabdaḥ sadṛśaparyāyo 'sti tad uktam -

     ivavad vāyathāśabdāḥ samānanibhasaṃnibhāḥ /

iti / tadanusāreṇendūdayena sadṛśa indūdayasaṃnibha iti vyākhyeyam / taduktyaiveti avahitatvoktyety arthaḥ / mūḍhacetana iti mūḍhadhiya iti ca mohanāmno mūḍhatvasya buddhidharmatvāt cetanadhīśabdayoḥ paunaruktyam / tatsaṃbandhāt tadavagatir iti cetanasaṃbandhāc caitanyāvagatir ity arthaḥ / kṛpāmṛdur iti / kṛpā cetanadharma iti caitanyavācipadaṃ na kṛtam / evaṃ mūḍhāḥ mūḍhaḥ ity atrāpi vācyam / uditavapuṣīti paunaruktyam evānusaṃdhatte / manaḥkartṛkatvaṃ pramodaḥ kriyākaraṇaśabdayor iti atra gauḥ śābaleya itivac chokakriyāśabdayoḥ sāmānyaviśeṣabhāvena prayogaḥ / granthakṛtas tu viśeṣasyaivopayogāt sāmānyāvyabhicārāc ca kriyāśabdasya vaiyarthyam karaṇaśabdasya kriyāvācitvān niṣphalatvam iti śokaśabda eva karttavya ity abhiprāyaḥ / anubhavaviśeṣātmatvopagama iti saugataprakriyayaitad uktam / vaiśeṣikās tu jaḍam evātmaguṇam ekārthasamavāyinā jñānena grāhyaṃ sukham āhuḥ / tatprakriyāyāṃ kartavyam evānubhavagrahaṇam / ekasyeti sāgarasya / itarasya ceti uttārārthasya / tadrūpatāvagater ity ubhayatra vācyam / madirādraveti / atra samābhātīty ekaṃ padaṃ gaṇitam upasargāṇāṃ dyotyapāratantryeṇa pṛthakpadārhatvābhāvāt / ekādiprayoge satīti ekasya prayogābhyupagame 'nyeṣām eva tattvam / tatrāpy ekatvam aniyatam / evaṃ dvayos trayāṇām ityādiyojanā kāryā, tatrāpy aniyatatvena prakārabahutvāt / avivekaprayuktam iti / yady apy avimṛśyakāritvasyaivāpatkaraṇatvaṃ, tathāpy avivekasyāvimṛśyakāritvaprayojakatvāt tasya kāraṇatve 'py avimṛśyakāritvam eva kāraṇam uktaṃ bhavati / na hīti yasmin sati vahnau dhūma ityādike pratibandhakālabhāviny anvaye sati viśeṣaṇasya yasya asati vahnau na dhūma ityādivyatirekasya gatiḥ pratītiḥ, tasyānvayasya sa eva vyatireko hetur yuktaḥ vayavasthitasya hetuhetumadbhāvasya vaiparītyaprasaṅgāt / anvayapratītihetuko hi vyatirekapratītyupakramo na tu viparyayaḥ / viśeṣaṇāc ceti guṇalubdhā iti sādhāraṇatvād ity arthaḥ / sāmarthyeti / dvividhaṃ paunaruktyam arthagataṃ śabdagataṃ ceti / tatrārthasya sāmarthyasiddhatve 'rthagataṃ gauṇam āmukhe paunaruktyānavabhāsāt / śabdagatam āsukhāvabhāsamānatvād mukhyam / prakṛtipratyayārthasyeti prakṛtyarthaḥ pratyayārthaḥ prakṛtipratyayasamudāyārtha iti vyastasamastatvena yojyam / evaṃ prakṛteḥ pratyayasya cety atrāpi vācyam / anyathā prāṅnirdiṣṭasya pañcavidhasya paunaruktyasyāsaṅgrahaḥ syāt / vihitasyeti / vastuvṛttyā sthitasya bahuvrīher yā karmadhārayaśaṅkā tayā matvarthīyādiḥ śabdaḥ kṛto bisakisalayacchedapātheyavanta ityādau / tasya sphuṭaṃ paunaruktyaṃ vṛttidvayasya gauravāt / yasminn iti jāmbavapallavādaunītyādau yasmin pallavaśabda ity arthaḥ / arthaḥ yatra + tyalakṣaṇo yattaddhitotpattiḥ yasmād aṇpratyayākhyāt taddhitād utpattiḥ pratītiviṣayatvāpattir yasyārthasya / tadantas taddhitapratyayānto jāmbavaśabdādiḥ / tenaiva pallavaśabdena na samasanīyaḥ, jambūpallavānīti samāsena gatatvāt taddhitavaiyarthyaprasaṅgāt / viśeṣaṇavaśād iti / pinākapāṇyādiviśeṣaṇamāhātmyāt / viśiṣṭam utkarṣāpakarṣavantaṃ saṃjñinaṃ harādikaṃ yatrecchet na tatra paunaruktyam / anyathā tu paunaruktyam / yathā pāyāt sa śītakiraṇābharaṇo bhavo vaḥ ityādau / sakṛd eveti sāmyābhidhāyī ivaśabdādiḥ / niryāya vidyetyādau / yadvad iti dṛṣṭāntamukhena janair ajātaskhalanair ityādi saṅgṛhītam / arthasyeti rāhustrīratanayor ityādau / yadvaśād iti tajjigīrṣur ivetyādau / athavā yatra kārakaviśeṣavaśāt kriyāyāḥ pratītiḥ kriyāviśeṣavaśād vā kārakasya, tatra kriyākārakayoḥ prayogo na kārya ity ayam arthaḥ / yathā mā bhavantam ityādau / yo yaddharmeti aparadiggaṇiketyādau yo diglakṣaṇo 'rtho yaddharmasya gaṇikādharmasya niṣkāsanāder upacāreṇopalakṣitaḥ / tathā ambunidher mamanthe ityādau yasya kāmukasya saṃbandhaṃ yad hṛdayādi tetyanānvito 'mbudhilakṣaṇo yaś cārthaḥ, tasya tadrūpaṇād gaṇikākāmukarūpaṇāt na śābdī / neṣyate / ārthī punar iṣyata eva / prayuktāntargatair eveti madirādravetyādau / kartari iti pradhānabhūte rājādau kartari / tatkriyāyāṃ ca khaḍgena cchadakriyāyāṃ rūḍhāyāṃ sādhakatamasya khaḍgasya yāni bahūni tadapekṣayāṅgāni dhārāvinipātādīni teṣāṃ vāg vacanaṃ neṣyate yathā karakalitetyādau / etad uktaṃ bhavati / rājādau karttari cchedādikriyāyāṃ yat sādhakatamaṃ khaḍgādyaṅgaṃ tasyāpy aṅgānāṃ dhārāvinipātādīnāṃ vacanaṃ neṣyate tenaivāṅgena pradhānabhūtenāvāntarāṅgānām apy ākṣepād / doṣadvayaṃ prayukteti karttari iti ca pratipāditam / te iti samāsāḥ / vṛttāv iti / samāse vākye vā asādhāraṇaṃ yatra viśeṣaṇaṃ tatra viśeṣyaṃ na vācyaṃ yathā duḥkhānubhavetyādau / yo yadātmeti bāṣpāder jalādirūpatvāvyabhicārāt prayojanābhāve jalādipadaprayogā na kārya ity arthaḥ / yathā nayane bāṣpavāriṇetyādau / yo yasyeti yo niṣyandanādiḥ yasya candrakāntāder dharmiṇo 'vyabhicārī dharmaḥ tayoḥ samāso na praśasyate, yathā dviṣadvadhūlocanetyādau / anyathā iti / sādharmyārtha ity arthaḥ / kriyeti kriyāyāḥ śokādilakṣaṇāyāḥ pratītiḥ karaṇapratītiṃ na vyabhicarati karaṇam eva yataḥ kriyā / tadapratītau karaṇāpratītau saiva śokādilakṣaṇā kriyā na niścitā syād ekatvāt / tyāgakriyety atraitad eva kriyāśabdapravṛttinimittam / tat tasmāt / tayadvaśāt śokādiśabdaprayogavaśād yasya karaṇasya vyaktiḥ prakāśas taduktau śākādiśabdaprayoge tat karaṇādivat padaṃ na prayuñjītety arthaḥ, yathā śokakriyākaraṇasyetyādau / prayukte ceti prakṛtyādipaunaruktyānāṃ caturṇām upasaṃhāraḥ / anyonyeti vākyapaunaruktyasaṃgrahaḥ / ubhayor uktir ekasya ubhayamadhyāt kasya cit / paunaruktyaṃ nātikrāmati / yathā sahasā vidadhītetyādau //

evaṃ paunaruktyaṃ saprapañcaṃ vicārya vācyāvacanaṃ prapañcayitum āha - vācyasyāvacanaṃ yatheti / asamāsena nirdeśo vakṣyamāṇam etatsamānanyāyam avācyasya vacanam api kaṭākṣayitum / idamā parāmarśa iti abādhitapratyakṣanimittatvād bhrāntinivṛtteḥ pratyakṣasya ca viṣayamukhena parāmarśārhatvāt / tasya yat svaśabdena vacanam iti pūrvaṃ saty eva sarvanāmni punaḥ svaśabdena pratipādanaṃ -

     sarvanāmaparāmarśayogyasyārthasya yat punaḥ /
     svaśabdenābhidhānaṃ sā śabdasya punaruktatā //

iti punaruktam uktam / idānīṃ tu sarvanāmasthanīyatvena svaśabdena vacanaṃ vācyāvacanam ucyate / dharmidharmeti dharmī haralakṣaṇo 'rthaḥ / dharmaḥ kapālasaṃbandhena garhitatvam / ubhayaṃ dharmidharmātmakam / viśeṣapratipattaya iti garhitatvam atra viśeṣaḥ / tasyeti garhitatvasya / evaṃ tasya vivakṣitety atra jñeyam / vivakṣito 'rthaḥ śocyatālakṣaṇaḥ / ārtha iti viśeṣaṇadvāreṇa bhāvāt / vāmalocanātvam iti / na cātra vāmalocaneti viśeṣyapadam / yato 'pi yattacchabdadvayotthāpitavākyārthadvayasāmarthyān nāyikālakṣaṇasya viśeṣyasya pratītiḥ / viśeṣaṇam evātra vāmalocanāpadam / tṛtīya iti ubhayavṛttitvākhyaḥ / na cāsāv iti āvṛttiḥ / na caiṣām iti tenaiva tatparyāyeṇa sarvanāmnā cety eṣāṃ prakārāṇām / alpadoṣatvād iti / tasyeti vyavahitasaṃbandhāt kiṃ cid utkṛṣṭatvam / tasya samāgamaprārthanayeti vācyam / arthabhedād iti / ayam arthaḥ ekasyāsakṛdvṛttā sarvā vāvṛttiḥ, yathā daridrāṇāṃ bhojane kāṃsyapātryāḥ / tad uktam - āvṛttir asakṛdvṛttiḥ iti / na cārthabhede śabdasyaikatvaṃ nyāyyam arthabhedasya pradhānabhūtasya guṇabhūtaṃ śabdaṃ prati bhedakatvam tvāt / tasmād atra dvayoḥ śabdayor vastuvṛttena yat sādṛśyaṃ yaś ca sādṛśyahetukaḥ pratipattṛṛṇām ekatābhramaḥ, tannibandhano 'yaṃ mukhya evāvṛttivyavahāra iti / ataś ceti / yata āvṛttir na yujyate, tata ity arthaḥ / dharmidharmobhayātmakam iti / ubhayamaye vastuni pratipatsita ity arthaḥ / yatrānyasyetyādinā / vācyāvacanodāharaṇaprasaṅgena śleṣaṃ guṇadoṣavattayā vitataṃ vicārayati / alakālīti / alakāny evāḷikulam alakasadṛśaṃ cālikulam / chado 'dharaḥ patrāṇi ca / āmodaḥ praharṣaḥ saurabhaṃ ca / karṇikā karṇābharaṇaṃ bījakośaś ca / na śleṣasyeti / nanu śleṣaprastāve kaḥ prasaṅgo 'bjasyopamānacarcāyām / naitat / alaṅkārāntaraviviktaviṣayābhāvena sarvālaṅkārāpavādatvāc śleṣasyopamāpratibhotpattihetuḥ śleṣa evātra nyāyyo nopamety abhiprāyaḥ / ata eva śleṣe tu tasya vācyatayety uktam / nibandha iti nibadhnantīti nirdiṣṭaḥ / tatsāmyaṃ rajjvādisāmyam / na śleṣasyeti upamāśleṣasyety arthaḥ / tena rajjvādipratipādakaṃ guṇā iveti na vācyam / nanu viśeṣaṇasāmyanibandhanā samāsoktir na ca nibadhnantīti viśeṣaṇam ity āha na hi viśeṣaṇasāmyam eveti / etac cāsmābhir harṣacaritavārtike nirṇītam iti tata evāvadhāryam / pṛthak tam upādāyeti tacchabdena śaśī parāmṛṣṭaḥ / sa hy ārtha eveti upamānopameyabhāvaḥ / śleṣaviṣaye iti / atra tisraḥ kakṣyāḥ / rājaśabdasyobhayārthatvāc śleṣaḥ / tadanāśrayaṇenendunā rūpaṇaṃ tatpṛṣṭhe cendur ivety upamā / nanu rājendur ity atra tūpamārūpakayor ekaparigrahe sādhakabādhakābhāvāt saṅkaro nyāyyaḥ, na niyamena rūpakam / tat katham uktaṃ rūpakam āsūtritam iti / ucyate / prakramyamāṇopamābhiprāyāt paunaruktyabhayena rūpakam āśritam / upamāyā abhāve tu saṅkara evātra yuktaḥ / yad vopamāpekṣayā rūpakasyātra samāse sphuṭatvena pratīte rūpakaṃ saṃśritam / anenaiva hy abhiprāyeṇa vakṣyati rūpakasya viṣaye upamāyā yatheti / tābhyāṃ spardhitum iti / rūpakaṃ śleṣarūpakābhyām / tayor yathāpūrvam iti / upamāpekṣayā rūpakasya rūpakāpekṣayā śleṣasyety arthaḥ //

  nanv evaṃ satīti / asya doṣasyātiprasaṅgaṃ brūte / tāpa ātapo 'pi / phalaṃ śālyādikam api / sumanasaḥ puṣpāṇy api / khalatā durjanatvaṃ, dhānyādikṣodanasthānaṃ ca / asatī dūṣaṇīyā aśobhanā ca / yadalaṅkāreti / khalatām ityādāv upamotthāpite śleṣe nopamā śleṣaṃ bādhate / tasya viviktaviṣaytvābhāvāt / śleṣas tu tām bādhate iti yuktam / asya nyāyasyālaṅkārāntare 'pi bhāvād vyāptigarbham uktaṃ yad alaṅkāreti / nibandhanāntarābhāve iti / sati samāsoktyādinibandhane pūrvavat śleṣottāpitopamā na kartavyā syāt / na cātrānirākṛtetyādiviśeṣaṇasāmyāt samāsoktir iti vācyam / viśeṣaṇānāṃ niyatopamānagāmitvāpratīteḥ / atra viṣayatāśaṅkaiveti upamāviṣayatvasaṃbhāvanety arthaḥ / kva cit tu tada[tadv]iṣayateti pāṭhaḥ / tatra śleṣaviṣayatvam upamāviṣayatvaṃ ca yugapan na śaṅkanīyaṃ tayor utsargāpavādedabhāve na vyavasthiter ity arthaḥ / uktadoṣadvayeti / uktaṃ yac śleṣaviṣaye doṣadvayaṃ - yatra samāsoktiviṣaye śleṣaḥ kṛtaḥ śleṣaviṣaye copameti, tasyātra saṃbandhābhāvād ity arthaḥ / yadalaṅkāreti / śleṣopamādīnām alaṅkārāṇām abhivyaktyarthaṃ ye śabdā abjam ivetyādayaḥ tebhyo 'laṅkārebhya itaraḥ samāsoktiśleṣādiḥ tair eva śabdaiḥ alpatarair abjam ivetyādirahitair yadi vyajyeta tadāsau samāsoktiśleṣādir laghutvād grāhyo, nāparaḥ śleṣopamādir ity arthaḥ / nanu śobhātiśayahetutvam alaṅkārāntarāṇāṃ lakṣaṇam / tad viśeṣyate / tat katham idam uktam ity āha - na hy astīti / śobhātiśayajanane nije vyāpāre nāsty alaṅkārāṇāṃ viśeṣaḥ / tataś caiko gṛhyate 'paras tyajyata iti na yuktam / gurulaghutvam āśritya punar yujyata etan nānyatheti tātparyam / vācyātiśayāpekṣayā caitad uktam pratīyamānatvāpekṣayā tu samanantaraṃ viśeṣo vakṣyate / kiṃ cetyādinā kāvyakriyāyāṃ saundaryaniṣpatteḥ prayojakatvam alaṅkāraniṣpatteś ca anuniṣpāditaṃ yathā vaktā vedanācāmayoḥ ity āha / samāsoktiśleṣabhaṅgibhyām eveti / samāsoktyā tu alakālītyādau / śleṣeṇa bhairavācārya ityādau / nopameyeti / alakālītyādāv upamā śleṣopamā / bhairavācārya ityādau upamaivopamā / atra samāsoktiśleṣabhaṅgibhyām eva ity etadgranthānusāreṇa rūpakasya viṣaye upamāyā yathetyādigranthaḥ prakṣipta iva lakṣyate / rūpakasyehānupasaṃhārād, uktadoṣadvayayogāsiddheḥ ity asya ca pūrvoktagranthasyātra pakṣe nyūnatvād ataś caivāyaṃ kva cid ādarśe na paṭhyate / aprakṣepe tu trirūpakagrahaṇam iha kartvyaṃ syāt / tasmāt sa vā grantho nivārya iha vā rūpakagrahaṇaṃ prakṣepyam / uktadoṣadvayeti ca prakṛtaucityena vyākhyātam / te hi tatsiddhīti / rasabandhasiddhāv alaṅkārā avaśyaṃ sidhyantīty arthaḥ / niṣpādakatvam ihānmāpakatvam / ata eva bharate rasaniṣpattir ity atra rasānumitir iti vyākhyeyam / tadvaicitryaṃ vibhāvādivaicitryam / tadāśrayāḥ paraṃparayā rasāśrayā rasajñaptihetava ity arthaḥ / tenaiṣām iti / kaver arthagataṃ cārutvaṃ tātparyeṇa saṃpādyaṃ, nālaṅkāropanibandhaḥ alaṅkārāṇāṃ tannāntarīyakatvenāprādhānyāt / ataś cārutvaṃ yathā niṣpadyate tathā teṣām upanibandhaḥ kāryaḥ / tatprayojanāc cādhānoddharaṇādaya ity arthaḥ / nānvahādhānoddharaṇādaya ity uktyā alaṅkārāṇāṃ parasparaṃ cārutvaniṣpādane viśeṣaḥ pratipāditaḥ / pūrvaṃ ca na hy asti nije ityādinā viśeṣābhāva uktaḥ / tat kathaṃ na virodhaḥ / naitat / pūrvam avavadhānena cārutvaniṣpādanaṃ manasikṛtya viśeṣābhāvaḥ pratipāditaḥ / iha tu vibhāvādyupakaraṇatvena gurulaghutvādinā viśeṣa ukta ity apekṣābhedā[n na] virodhaḥ kaś cit /

kaiś cid iti vāmanaprabhṛtibhiḥ / adhunā yat pratijñāmātreṇa pratipāditaṃ yathā śabdasya śaktyantarābhāvād vyañjakatvaṃ na saṃbhavati iti tadvācyāvacanodāharaṇatvopayogi śleṣaprasaṅgenopapādayitum āsūtrayati - sa cāyam iti / yas samāsoktiviṣaye kṛto yasya ca viṣaye upamā kṛtā sa ity arthaḥ / dvividha iti vakṣyamāṇasyobhayaśleṣasyātraivāntarbhāvaḥ / ābhyām eva samuccitābhyāṃ tasyotthāpanāt / yatrānyūneti yatra viśeṣyasya viśeṣaṇaṃ na nyūnībhavati nāpy atiricyate, tatra śleṣaḥ / mātragrahaṇaṃ liṅgavacanānāṃ bhedād ubhayasaṃbandhasahiṣṇuśabdatāparigrahārtham / kartṛkarmeti / kartṛkarmarūpaḥ ādigrahaṇāt kriyārūpo yatra pradhānabhūto 'rthaḥ śleṣeṇa svarūpahāniṃ nīyate, na tatra śleṣo niravadya ity arthaḥ / tasya ca dharmapratipādakaśabdaviṣayatvena dharmipratipādakaśabdaviṣayatvena ca dvaividhyam / ubhayapratipādakaśabdaviṣayatvaṃ tu dūṣayiṣyate / aparas tv iti / arthaśleṣaḥ / ubhayatrāpi śabdaśleṣe 'rthaśleṣe ca / yāvad ivādi nibandhanaṃ nāśritaṃ tāvad arthāntaram apramāṇakam eveti śleṣābhivyaktyarthaṃ nibandhanam āśrayaṇīyam / atrāntare iti phullamallikābhir dhavalā ye 'ṭṭās tripuracatuṣpuramahāprakārā āpaṇā vā tair vikāso hāso yasya tadvac ca dhavalāṭṭahāso yasya / kusumasamayayugaṃ māsadvayaṃ ramyatvena tatsadṛśa ca yugaṃ kṛtādim upasaṃharan ajṛmbhata vikasitavān vyaktānanaś cābhūd mahākālo dīrghasamayaḥ saṃhartṛdevatāviśeṣaś ca / samāsoktīti / mahākāla ity atra mahāsamaya ity aśliṣṭe viśeṣyapade prayukte viśeṣaṇasāmyād eva devatāviśeṣapratīteḥ samāsoktir bhavantī mahākālaśabdasyāvṛttau pramāṇam / na cātra mahākālaśabde prayukte prayāsaḥ kaś cit / yena alakālikuletivat samāsoktyā śleṣasya vaiyarthyaṃ śaṅkyeta / ācchāditeti / parvatapakṣe ācchāditaṃ vaipulyād diśaś cāmbaram ākāśaṃ ca yena, uccakair ucyatāṃ gāṃ bhūmiṃ cākramya vartamānaṃ, mahārohapariṇāhāni śṛṅgāṇi śikharāṇi yasya, tadaucityāc ca śirasi sphurac candralekham, evaṃvidhaṃ nageśaṃ parvatarājaṃ dṛṣṭvā ko na vismito bhavatīty arthaḥ / harapakṣe tu ācchāditaṃ paridhānīkṛta diśa eva asya nava vastraṃ yena, tathā u[k]taṃ sthūlaviṣāṇa ca vṛṣabham adhiruhya sthitaṃ, mastake candrakalānvitaṃ ca nageśa kailāsādhipatiṃ sākṣātkṛtya anugṛhītammanyatvena ko na vismayata ity arthaḥ / śveto dhāvatītivad iti śabdatantram / pradīpavad iti punar arthatantram / yathāyogam iti tulyapradhānatvena sādhāraṇyaṃ tantram / atulyapradhānatvena tu prasaṅgaḥ / tayoḥ pratipattir iti / kiṃ cit khalu vastuśaktyaiva kāryakāri yathā dīpādi / kiṃ cit tu parāmarśāpekṣaṃ yathā dhūmādi liṅgam / yatra yasmin viṣaye parāmarśanairapekṣyeṇa vastuśaktyaivobhayakāritvaṃ tatra tantrādi nānyatra / śabdaḥ parāmarśāpekṣo 'rthapratītikārī / parāmarśo na nirnibandhana iti nātra tantrādipravṛttiḥ / ahāryaḥ parvataḥ / sahakāritā saha karaṇaśīlatva sahakārasaṃbandhaś ca / anavamā utkṛṣṭāḥ / navaḥ pratyagraḥ / mādhavo vasantaḥ / ramyatātireketi sahakārasaṃbandharūpa ity arthaḥ / tasya vācyasyeti / tacchabdena nibandhanaṃ parāmṛṣṭam /

samayasmṛtiḥ saṅketasmaraṇam / asiddham ekatvam iti / tataś ca nāyaṃ tantrāder viṣayaḥ / tattvam ekatvam / avyayānavyayātmakam iti / avyayam ivādi / anavyayaṃ sadṛśādi / dharmārthasyeti / śleṣād abhinnatvam iti yojyam / prakaṭeti / kulayaś caṭakāḥ tad uktam - kuliḥ kuliṅgaś caṭakaḥ iti / te ca te śakuntāḥ śakunayaḥ teṣāṃ cakreṇa samūhena bhāsvatīnāṃ valabhīnāṃ hitāḥ anurūpā mattavāraṇāḥ aṅkaḥ cihnaṃ yasyāḥ / niśānto 'ntaḥpuram / viḍambayantī uapahasantī / samarabhūpakṣe kuliśaṃ vajraṃ / kuntāḥ prāsāḥ / cakrāṇi arīṇi / tair bhāsvadbhiḥ / vyatireko viḍambayantīti prakāśitaḥ / prakaṭetyādau ca viśeṣaṇabhāge 'tra śleṣaḥ / uṣasīti / andhakāra eva malinatvāt paṅkaḥ / tasya vigalitasya plavo 'navasthānaṃ tena śabalaṃ vicitram / ghanavartma viyat / dūram atyartham / madhuraḥ sukumāro yas taraṇitāpo raviprabhā tadyogena tāraṃ hṛdyam / madhupāyino bhramarās teṣāṃ paṅktiḥ / andhakārapaṅkaplava eva vigalanena nissāratvāc chavaḥ tasya laṅghanena vartmasu pakṣmasu dūramā aramaṇīyaśrīḥ / madhuratā makarandāsaktā tathā raṇitā saśabdā, yad vā madhuratena makarandāsaṅgena raṇitaṃ guñjitaṃ yasyāḥ / payogatā jalagatā / aram atyartham / atra ghanavartmaśabdasyopameyavācinaḥ śleṣe 'ntarbhāvāt dharmidharmobhayārthasyodāharaṇatve nyāyye dharmārthasyodāharaṇatvaṃ cintyam / anavarateti / anavarataṃ nayanasalilena sicyamāno vṛddhiṃ nīyamānaḥ / tathā anavarataṃ nayanaṃ prāpaṇaṃ yasya tena salilena sicyamāna ārdratvaṃ prāpyamāṇaḥ / vipado lavaḥ sūkṣmabhāgo vipallavo vigatakisalayaś ca / prarohati vistīrṇībhavati aṅkurāṃś ca muñcati dharmāṃś ca muñcati dharmārthatvam iti / kila atra sthitam api dharmārthatvaṃ nopamānaviśeṣaṇatvāyālaṃ viśeṣaṇatvasya kakṣyāntarabhāvitvāt / na cāvṛttim antareṇa kakṣyāntaraparigraho nyāyyaḥ / na cātrāvṛttiḥ kāryā / pramāṇābhāvāt / anāvṛttau tu tasyām eva kakṣyāyāṃ viśeṣaṇatve upameyasvarūpāpahāraprasaṅga iti padārthaḥ / tasyopameyeti tacchabdena vipallavaśabdaḥ parāmṛṣṭaḥ / yaḥ punar iti śleṣaprayojakaḥ śabdaḥ / apradhānaṃ viśeṣaṇabhūtam / pradhānasya hi pūrvoktanyāyenāvṛttir nyāyyā / nibandhanam ivādi / sānuparvatasya mālabhūbhāgaḥ / aṅkollākhyās taravaḥ teṣāṃ pallavā bhāsvanto yatra / aṅkollaśabdaḥ prākṛtabhāṣāpadam api kavibhir atiprasiddhyā śleṣādiṣu prayujyate / tathā ca sakuśāṅkollapallavā / maithilīva śriyaṃ dhatte iti parimalena prayutam / saṃskṛte punar aṅkoṭhaśabdaḥ sthitaḥ / tathā bhāsvān aṅke ullapan mukharaḥ lavākhyaḥ putro yatreti sāmānyenānyapadārtho gṛhyate / iheti vipallavaśabde / ivādyavyayam iti / tarur iveti prayuktasyevaśabdasyānyathā vyavasthāpayiṣyamāṇatvāt / alaṅkārāntaraṃ samāsoktyādi / pradhānārthasaṃsparśamātrād iti / yataḥ tena padena saṃbhavadapradhānārthenāpi pradhānabhūto 'rthaḥ saṃspṛṣṭaḥ, tato 'ntarasaṃbandhāsahiṣṇutvāt dvirupādānārhatvam / yatra ca pradhānāpradhānobhayārthasya dvirupādānam avaśyaṃ kāryam, tatra daṇḍāpūpikayā tadekārthasya pradhānamātrārthasya śabdasya dvirupādānaṃ nyāyasiddham eva / rucir dīptiḥ abhilāṣaś ca ruciḥ / atra dvau ruciśabdau viśeṣyavācitvāt pradhānārthau / nanūpamānasya yadi viśeṣyatvaṃ nopameyaviśeṣaṇatvaṃ tat katham upameyasaṃbandhiny upamānasya vibhaktiḥ yathā vāgarthāv iva saṃpṛktau iti / naiṣa doṣaḥ / viśeṣaṇatvam avacchedakatvaṃ tac copamānasyopameyaṃ praty upamitikriyāyāṃ vidyata eva / anyathā tayoḥ saṃbandhābhāvād ananvyaprasaṅgaḥ / sthite viśeṣaṇatve tasya na viśeṣyavibhakter hāniḥ kā cit / yat punar ihopamānaśabdasya viśeṣyavācitvam uktaṃ tad dharmitābhiprāyeṇa / dharmī hy upamānam / na ca svatantratvāt viśeṣyārthaḥ / ataś caivāyaṃ strīva gacchati ṣaṇḍo 'yam ity upameyaliṅgaṃ na bhajate / dharmavāci tu viśeṣaṇaṃ viśeṣyaliṅgam eva / tad uktam - guṇavacanānām āśrayato liṅgavacanāni bhavanti iti / tad evam upamānam upameyavibhaktiṃ na na bhajate dharmitvaṃ ca na jahātīti / khalatā durjanatvam / khalatā ākāśavallī / atra prayukta iti / tarur ivety atra / vākyabhedaprasaṅgād iti saṃbhavaty ekavākyatve vākyabhedaś ca neṣyate iti vākyabhedasya pratipattigauravavattvād dheyatvam / atha samāsoktīti / anavaratajaletyāder viśeṣaṇasya dvyarthatvāt / upamānabhūteti / yatropamānabhūtasya dharmiṇo 'nyasyārthasya gamyamānatvaṃ tatra samāsoktiḥ, na sākṣād upādāna ity arthaḥ / kva cid iti / babhravaḥ kapilāḥ / etad dāvāgniviśeṣaṇaṃ san nakulalakṣaṇam arthaṃ pratipādayatīti dharmidharmobhayātmatvam / evaṃ hariṇā haritā mṛgāś ca / jaṭā mūlāni keśasaṃniveśāś ca / valkalaṃ vṛkṣatvak tatkṛtaṃ ca vāsaḥ / kapilāḥ piṅgalā muniviśeṣāś ca / āropaviṣayabahutvād āropyamānānām api bahutvam /

kesariṇaṃ bakulapuṣpavantaṃ siṃhaṃ ca / vasantaṃ mādhavaṃ nivasantaṃ ca / abhimāno dhārādhirūḍho māno mahāpramāṇaś ca / durvāraṇo 'śakyavāraṇo duṣṭaś ca karī / matto matsakāśāt samadaś ca / abhimāna iti na tathā hṛdayaṅgamaḥ pāṭhaḥ / anyonyam iti vasantam ity asya kesariṇam iti viśeṣaṇaṃ, siṃhapakṣe ca kesariṇam ity asya vasantam iti / rūpyeti yaḥ kesarī pratītaḥ sa vasantasya rūpakatvena na tāṭasthyena / evaṃ vasantam ity asya nivasanārthayoge 'pi vasantārthaḥ kesariṇo rūpakatvena yojanīyaḥ / ittham eva durvāraṇābhimānayor vācyam / viśeṣyatvena rūpyatvena ca svatantratvaṃ, tadviparyayeṇa paratantratvam / viśeṣyādyātmaketi / ādigrahaṇena rūpyarūpakabhāvo gṛhyate / tilakas taruviśeṣas tilakaś ca viśeṣakaḥ / tadabhivyaktir ubhayārthābhivyaktiḥ / tayor ubhayor arthayoḥ / guṇavanto rajjuyuktā api ghaṭakāḥ saṅghaṭayitāro hrasvāś ca ghaṭāḥ / pārthivā rājānaḥ, na tu vakṣyamāṇayuktyā pṛthivīvikārā vyākhyeyāḥ guṇavattvaghaṭakatvayor iti / yady apy atra samīhitasiddhau hetutvena vyavasthitasya ghaṭakā ity asya pārthivā iti prati viśeṣaṇatvaṃ, tathāpi kūpa ivety upamāsāmarthyād viśeṣyatvam api ghaṭate //
